www.learninggui... In this video I demonstrate the different tones you can get with a Gibson SG and a 1966 Fender Vibrolux. No effects. Straight into amp using open e tuning.
Another thing to note. There is no eq, compression, or additional processing. My vocal mic was deleted while playing so there is no room mic sound. Recording chain is Sm 57 about 6" off speaker straight into LA 610 to Pro Tools 24 bit 48khz. For the techies out there. :)
Love your vibrato, John! And your playing--amazing! I just got a 61 reissue SG and it is such a great guitar for slide. Great demo of the monstrous tones in that thing!
I've watched this video twice a week for the last three weeks. I've got an original '65 Vibrolux Reverb coming to me tomorrow. Can't wait to dig into it like you do in this video!
@sebm89 It's a Mr B's Bottleneck. This one is a little heavier than the normal one I use. To me they sound way better than the Dunlop which I used for a very long time. I only use Mr B's now.
Awesome!! its great 2c there are some of us left who appreciate great tone.. There are tons of demos of jacked up crazy sounding lil pedals and stuff on here that i think sound like crap... Just crazy sounding rigs.. This is pure guitar tone at its best< great guitar into great amp=great tone! That simple.. Thanks for posting...
I never like the sound 1 inch away. It's too thin I think. If you do that you will need to combine with a room mic. I usually will mix two mics together, a room and close. Moving the close mic out a little bit will eliminate the need for the room. Especially with the reverb on that amp.
It's pretty crazy, but the stuff made in the sixties can't be beat for tone or simplicity of build. It that amp breaks down, a tech can fix it easily. Not exactly the case when you have channel switching amps and PCB.
Man I've got a similar rig and you really pull a great tone out of that amp. 70s Celestions you say? What model exactly? What tubes are you running? Sounds so good
That tone is Duane Allman in ABSOLUTE SPADES. Incredible. It just drips Statesboro Blues. You're a great player too. I can't believe that's straight into that amp w nothing in front of it. Amazing. Duane Allman used a 50Watt Marshall Super Bass but even he used a fuzz face w weak batteries to drive the signal.
Duane only used the fuzz pedal back in his session-player days before the Allman Brothers. All of the live ABB stuff is just a cranked 50 watt Plexi Bass head, no pedals.
Very, very nice playing and the tones are killer!! I never thought that Celestions would sound too good in a Vibrolux! I've been searching for the perfect 10's in mine. The original Oxfords are ok but nowhere near perfect.
@edniripo They must be 10's bro... and this whole set up is the tone for god's... dude you are awesome. You are a piece of American Pie... Thanks.... All the way from South Australia......
Great playing and tone. And also, it sounds like you did a good miking job to capture the sound of the amp. I just got an SM57 but am having trouble getting a good sound (although I can't say I've tried too long). I've always heard about miking 1 inch away, but you said below that you were 6 inches. What differences have you noticed with it back at that distance?
Hi John, really enjoy your technique & tone buddy, what tuning are you in on this vid and can i purchase the whole series youve got for sale on slide guitar, im in the UK. Kindest regards Carl
What gauge and type of strings are you using? I am looking to purchase your DVD set soon, and I want to have my guitar ready for it. I have went through about the same challenges in the beggining of slide playing... totally crap in the start. I believe your DVD set will channel me in the right direction. Right now I pick up bits and pieces, but would like my efforts to be "not for nothing." Thanks for this!
Hi, I just subscribed to you channel, incredible tone! One question about the gear: do you think current Vibrolux reissues are going to sound similarly good?
Thanks... and (newbie question) that would be any old Vibrolux from the sixties to... eighties or what? Or how can I identifiy them? Because unfortunately chances are I'll have to buy online, without actually checking it live. Any advice? Thanks in advance!
I haven't played them all but any silverface from 67-79 should be decent. For speaker replacement I would go with Weber 10F150T. A quick search on Reverb brought up something like this. reverb.com/item/14618467-used-fender-vibrolux-reverb-1973-silverface
Hello. Bet u got this question alot: What kind of slide do u use? seems kind of heavy(?) Reason why a ask, is becus when i play slide i use a dunlop bottle neck, And i really dig the tone with it, but it makes my pinky all sweaty and soft. So when im going out slide, my pinkys hammer and pull of are real weak. Thanks.
Hey have you tried the new Fender 68 Custom Vibrolux reissue? Is it in anyway comparable to the Vintage 60's bf vibrolux's? Here in Australia it's pretty pricey to get a vintage vibrolux bf from the us with shipping and tax. This is the greatest tone I have heard. What's the next best thing?
