In this official Gibson Murphy Lab Acoustic Buyers Guide video, Dinesh demos the full range of Gibson Murphy Lab acoustic guitars, providing a sound comparison, and delving into the unique specifications of each guitar. There's also an interview with Tom Murphy-Gibson Custom's Master Artisan and the man who pioneered Gibson Custom's proprietary aging techniques.
Murphy Lab acoustics offer vintage tone and feel, redefined. Gibson Custom's exclusive Murphy Lab lacquer and thermally-aged tops enhance resonance and tone, while the Murphy Lab Light Aging treatment provides the played-in feel and look of a vintage guitar with softened edges throughout.
Tom lifts the lid on the Murphy Lab aging process, hints at the unique tools used, and explains how Gibson Custom's exclusive Murphy Lab nitrocellulose lacquer and finishing process enhance the tone of your acoustic guitar. Tom also provides some insight into how everything from hand placement, how you play chords, and even your belt buckle dictate how your guitar is distressed-and it's these subtle details that are used to make Murphy Lab instruments the most realistic aged guitars on the market.
If you're curious about these Gibson acoustic guitars, sit back and enjoy. This video shows everything you need to know about the Gibson Murphy Lab Acoustic models courtesy of Tom Murphy himself, and of course Dinesh.
What is the Gibson Murphy Lab Acoustic series?
Luthiers at Gibson's Acoustic craftory in Bozeman, Montana, applied Murphy Lab Light Aging to five classic models including the 1933 L-00, 1942 Banner J-45, 1942 Banner Southern Jumbo, 1960 Hummingbird, and 1957 SJ-200. With thermally aged tonewood tops and lightly aged hardware, these beautifully simulate decades of light play-wear, giving them the unique character, vibe, and feel of vintage originals.
If you’ve ever wondered whether or not vintage or Custom Shop guitars are best for you, Murphy Lab offers the best of both worlds. You get the playability, feel, and sound of an authentic vintage guitar, with the reliability of a modern instrument, hand-aged by the Murphy Lab team to ensure your guitar looks and feels like a much-loved instrument with plenty of stories left to tell.

Really enjoyed the presentation. You did some nice pick and finger style playing on all the guitars except the SJ-200, and relegate it to being a "struming" guitar. And, yes, it's a great strummer. But, as an owner of said guitar, I do quite a bit of finger picking with it -- and it's great! The guitar is an orchestra and can really project a nice round warm sound for finger picking, that I just love. So, next time you do a presentation using the SJ-200, please give an example of the richness of tone you can achieve in finger picking. Thank you so much! (Again, loved the video.) Tim M.

These are cool, but here's my issue. In 1942 a Gibson J-45 built in Kalamazoo sold retail for $45 USD ($882 in 2023 dollars, adjusting for inflation). Today if you ask Gibson, it's counterpart would be the modern J-45 Standard which sells for $2999, which is, even accounting for inflation over three times what the J-45 cost in 1942. But what's especially annoying is that the $2999 Standard series J-45 is not even up to the same standard as the J-45 that sold for $45 in 42'. No to get that quality, the buyer has to spend about $5000 to get the Gibson custom shop 1942 banner... There's something very, very off on this pricing. The Standard series J-45 may should cost $3000 in 2023, but it should be built to the same quality standards as that $45 1942 original for $3000. By requiring a custom shop guitar to get to what was the standard series quality, I feel like Gibson is admitting their standard series build quality is nowhere near what it once was, yet they don't mind pricing them as if they were three times the original quality.... Does this make sense to anyone? Is it any surprise why so many players are turning to smaller boutique builds?

I'll take that $3000 guitar. Oh, can you make the metal oxidize and rusty? Also, dent and scratch the body. Now it's $5000? Cool! @@frankwebster9110

I kind of agree with you, but also these guitars have a thermal aging process which guitars from 1942 would not have had. So it makes more sense to compare these guitars to guitars that's been naturally aged. When you look at it that way, it's at least better value than buying a vintage hummingbird, etc.
@rmzzz76
@rmzzz76 2 месяца назад
@@RainbowsIntheDark-ht6cu Standard series doesn't have thermal aging on the tops, just the Historic collection. Also, that process is not that expensive, Taylor is even offering now on their newer 100 series models like the 117e, which is a sub $1000 guitar.

Hey I have a 1930 L-1 and I’ve had a 36 L-00 both fantastic guitars. The prices on these MLs is getting close to what the real thing costs. Humm🤔 Oh forget to mention I got a 36 Advanced Jumbo CS. It really is a pleasure to play. Love the thermally aged top. It’s not a ML but I could not afford the real thing in that guitar. I think there were very few actually made back in the 30s. Huge Gibson fan.

I love them all. Unfortunately, my dream guitar has always been a J-200, but in black or in an aged natural finish. Fortunately, I wouldn’t be able to afford one anyway. 😬 I do miss the Dove in this series AND (my favorite) an LG-2. I’d kill for a black LG-2, but I’m sure everybody will have certain wishes and I understand you can’t do them all. ❤

Strangely this j 45 banner sounds really bad, very different from other online reviews, I don't know if it's the guitar, the player or the specific guitar but after the luck I had with a 2022 standard I think at this ridicolous price it's better to choose a good one in person

ill be honest, ive been a les Paul player since 1976. my first was a 76 les paul standard tabacco sunburst. 47 year later i still love it and the others ive bought. i do play acoustics have a 73 ovation beautiful guitar. gibson has beautiful acoustic guitars not dought but i want a nice new guitar and i dont want to pay twice the price for a murphy lab any guitar period. ruin beautiful new guitars is not my idea of fun. ill never buy any murphy aged guitar. ever. let time do its natural aging not tom murphy!!

@Joey_McElroy 7 месяцев назад
Do you genuinely believe they ruined the guitars? They sure sound good to me, they don’t sound ruined? Sure it’s not for everyone…but ruined? I love the look of an old guitar that has aged over its life. They have gotten better over the years…to make one look so convincing isn’t ruining the instrument, it a form of art, it’s a talent. Plus sometimes old guitars, especially flat tops can need a lot of work, like they said in the video, fret work, resetting the neck, repairing bracing. But with this you get the look of an old Gibson without having to worry about all the old problems. Seems everyone wants to talk crap about the modern aged Gibsons, but for some reason they just keep selling them…seems to me it’s cool for people to say they don’t like aged guitars, let them age themselves. But the reality as a business if it wasn’t selling they won’t keep doing it. Idk 🤷‍♂️ I’ll buy one. And seems alot of other will buy them too.

What is the supposed physics behind using hyde glue versus some other glue and it's alleged embellishments to tonal quality? The same question can be asked about the "nitro" lacquer. First, it's nitrocellulose lacquer. I don't know any finishers outside of the guitar world calling it "nitro", other than that it sounded cool, initially, and now everyone in the guitar world uses this term. I'll tell you this, I could lay down a nitrocellulose finish, or a precatalyzrd finish, or a polyester, and no one will hear the difference in tone, other than a perceived difference. This is such a wive's tale There ONLY difference in tone - one which you didn't mention, will come from aged woods. Your "aging" is all cosmetic, fake as the salesmanship hype snd fluff used to sell it. What's my bona fides? I'm both a guitar player AND a wood finisher. Anyone can be a wood finisher, true. But not everyone is a Gibson fanboy or afficiando, and not every finisher understands the process of a liquid resin knitting itself together to form a continuous film, "shrinkwrapping" the woods that it sits on. Last and least of my peeves, "...like I said." If you're going to do sales, don't be so unwashed. It's"as I said." I love the guitars. I love the finishing. I hate the hype. Most, I hate the misleading information. Hyde glue is great for many reasons, one of those reasons is reversablity. Nitrocellulose is great for many reasons, one of them is it looks as good ss it smells when it's done right. It polishes nicely, too. I thought that this video would delve into wood technology or something in depth. Nope, to use a colloquial expression that even I use, lol. Try this word on for size and see if the shoe fits, "hogwash".

Murphy Lab stuff are one of the biggest rip-offs in modern history. Even a rookie with farsightedness working at Fujigen Gakki can do a better job than this old coot, and it will cost five times less. Gibson is doing overtime on this planet, to say this husk of a company is a joke, would be an offense to comedy itself.
