Most reviewers are commenting on how you're getting less value for more money than previous models. I understand the reasoning, but this guitar is really appealing to me. I think it's the mahogany body that's interesting to me. The weight is another thing. The colors, too. I think I'll get one.

Sounds Awesome. And no more to say. It's expensive, we all know, welcome to 2023. Some of us we wanted thin light LPs. Please don't tell anymore how cheap the gibsons you bought 100000 years ago were: it's exhausting and helps nothing. Thanks If you don't like it, don't buy it!!! Guitars are not basic needs for human beings. The important thing here, as depicted from the review, is that it looks well made, it's light, resonant and balanced, and sounds killer. I have said elsewhere (including on various Gibson social media) that it's good to see them reintroduce what I bought in 1997 as The Paul SL, later known as the Studio Lite. The old model had a gloss finish; black headstock; and a 498R/500T pickup combination. It also lacked a pickguard. I had to let that one go many years ago, but it was my first Les Paul and I remembered it fondly, so I was interested to see these arrive on the scene. I wound up buying one a couple of months back, and it's easily as good as the old one. And it is indeed what amounts to a single cut SG. Finally, I must add that it is a SUPERB jazz instrument that works well with flatwounds and played clean (but then, all Les Pauls and SGs can make that claim) and keeps that singing quality. All that said, I got mine on sale at about $600 below list. Frankly, that's probably the correct price. My 2016 Les Paul Tribute (with P90s) was around $800 new.
@TVsBen
@TVsBen 10 месяцев назад
I was really hyped to see these get announced. I love the Les Paul body shape, it's so iconic, but a 9-10 lb guitar just isn't great for this late Gen X'er with neck and shoulder pain. Sounds a little darker than I was expecting but maybe that's the mahogany? Anyway, it seems like it takes gain really well and has a nice thick tone. I do prefer satin finished necks too. $1500 is a lot, though. It's a LOT. But I dig it.
@tim8745

Given the price point, wouldn't a studio model be a better value?
@scottdavidson6066
@scottdavidson6066 8 месяцев назад
Depends. If you want the darker/warmer tone of an all mahogany guitar or if weight or size matters to you, get the Modern Lite. If you want the brighter/snappier tone of a maple cap or a gloss nitro finish, you should get off the extra $200 for the Studio. Classics are also a great value while you can get them.

Nice review. Yes when these were first introduced my knee-jerk reaction was "more money for a downgrade from the Tribute". But as you say this is the world we live in; and Epiphone takes the place of the lower end of the scale. And in all honesty I have wondered how Gibson made any money on the $1K LP Special Tributes or the "regular" Tributes at $1,300 - much less the $1,200 they were from 2019-2022. Particularly for a company that was coming out of a bankruptcy. If they need these to be $1,500 then a Tribute would be $1,700 or $1,800 - and they would have to "upgrade" the Tribute to a mahogany neck and point-to-point wiring which could push it up a bit more - so any way you slice it the Tribute would now be more than the current price of the 2019-2023 Studio. For what it's worth I'm expecting the new version of the Studio to be $1,900-$2k; and remember the LP Classic is also gone. I could be wrong though - Gibson added an AAA maple top to the Les Paul Modern and kept the price at $3K. A couple of other points - I think the name "Modern" is a holdover from Gibson using the name "Modern Collection" for the lineup of guitars that aren't the classic Gibson specs (those being the "Original Collection") so they stuck the name "Modern Lite" to this one. And the term gig bag makes you think of a flimsey nylon type of gig bag; the Gibson is a soft case - semi-rigid vinyl, thick padding and a neck support. The padding is about as thick as a hard case; I used to have an LP Tribute and I bought a Gibson hard case for it; the soft case actually weighed a bit more empty than the hard case did empty.

My "low end" Gibson is a 2016 50s Tribute. It's all original and sounds good. I'm sure if I changed to Burstbuckers or 57 Classics it would sound great. But for the price point and quality it's def a great first step into Gibson USA. Bummer they've stopped production on them.

Nice tone. I have a bad back, so the lighter weight is very appealing. I am going to the only Gibson dealer in town tomorrow to try one out. I have done a lot of homework, watching several reviews and discussing things with the staff of the guitar shop. It is a new model, of course, and I believe it is replacing the Gibson Les Paul Tribute and the Gibson Les Paul Special Tribute. Correct me if I am wrong. Last Christmas I tried out a Tribute model, and it seemed to be about the same as my own Gibson LPM 2014 120th anniversary model as far as ease and enjoyment of playing were concerned, so I didn't make a purchase. I bought the Gibson LPM about five years ago, with the eTune robotic tuner, which worked like a computer automatically moving the machine heads to give it perfect trouble free tuning. I had to replace the tuner because I damaged it, and it was replaced with a standard set of machine heads. The LPM is a very nice guitar, and I am hoping that the Modern Lite will be an improvement on something that has served me very well. I am hoping to find a guitar that has a different sound from the LPM, so that I have more variety when comparing the two guitars. Quality of build is important too..........apparently the Modern Lite is made in Nashville Tennessee, U.S.A., which is a recommendation in itself. So tomorrow is the big day! Wish me luck!

LPST did not have a arched top, no belly cut, hard edges and I have not seen one that is under 7lbs, most of the time you find them they are 8lbs+.

Thorough demo of Modern Lite that's not really Modern, thanks. Surprised they didn't just put ceramic 496/500 pickups in this and make it stand out from Tribute/Studio/SGs plenty already with 490s. Pretty disappointed there's no no coil taps. These unique and gorgeous colors really need gloss nitro protecting the finish from chipping. Glad I got my Tribute Special P90 while they were available, heck of deal on sale. For sure grab a Tribute, still a few kicking around in Spring 2024!

One concern I have with this is neck-dive.... I have a similar guitar by Gibson - the Special Tribute "Raven" which was a Guitar Center exclusive release... It is a single slab mahogany body and neck, but it has richlite fretboard and is not the "thin" body.... That said, my LP has significant neck-dive. I never would have thought that would be an issue on a LP as they are so traditionally heavy and well balanced.... but it dives like an SG..... I have to imagine this with the thin body, it has to dive???

Man, at first I was excited…but ooof. If you want to call it modern, then it should probably at least have electronics designed at least this past decade. I like the Gibson 498 set, but they aren’t the clear modern sound people expect out of something with the “modern” label. Even my Fishman Open Core Classic set sounds much cleaner and has the benefits of many usable voicings. No locking tuners, no graphtec nut, and no pickup splitting. Even my Epiphone has an inlaid logo. It’s a really cool guitar for 900$. 1200$ is asking alot. 1500$ is an insult. This “base model” should start at 1k tops, add another 350$ for Fishmans/locking tuners, and you’re more in the realm of reality for a “modern” LP and what players expect from such a label.

I think these guitars would actually sound better paired with a Seymour Duncan 59 both in the bridge and neck positions

I would certainly not pay anything near $1500 for that thing. Looks like a cheap LP copy.

Those caps are a joke! They buy so much in bulk that an orange drop in probably a quarter of a penny to Gibson, so they probably saved $100 in caps for this run of overpriced crap. Gibson, do better! You turned things around and replace a decent Tribute with this American made $99 guitar?!?

This guitar is nothing more than a profit maker for gibson. They bulit the absolute cheapest version of a Les Paul and raised the price on top of it. Absolute terrible guitar for an insane price. I'll definitely be buyjng another brand. Gibson has completely lost their mind. By the way, these ultra modern weight relieved guitars sound like shit !!! I'll never buy another Gibson unless they start building REAL Les Pauls again which I don't believe will ever happen. That name on the headstick is totally overrated. There's many companies producing guitars at least equal to or better than Gibson for far less money. Bye Gibson...

Yeah, but a lot of people (including me) are searching for lightweight axes...

@@huli8557 - If it's your personal preference to own a light guitar that's all fine with me. However, Guitar companies should give buyers a choice. I've owned several light guitars and not one of them sounded good to my ear. Why do you think people pay outrageous prices for 50s Les Paul's ? It's a fact that one reason in nostalgia however, another big reason is the original Les Paul's were not weight relieved and it's definitely a fact that there is a difference in tone with a full weight and weight relived Les Paul. All I'm saying is I would like the choice.

Looks like ass and the features it has should be embarrasing for Gibson for the price they are selling them at. Just stick to Chibsons IMHO, for a 1000$ you can get arguably a better made, more beautiful, Les Paul and very good pickups. Gibson is overreaching, hard with this one. 1500$ for a subpar guitar? No thank you.
