I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU say got the guitar 2 days ago and in my opinion this is the best made Gibson I have owned. I own the 50s 60s 70s the classic the Sgs the studio the explorer the junior you name it got them all and this particular one really inspires me and makes me play none stop . Just play it and if you don't like it then you got a lemon what can I say .... Maybe I got lucky and will keep this guitar and play until I die. Have over 50 guitars and this has won my interest . Sell it there is a demand for it ....
Same here. I bought mine a couple of days ago. I was at my local guitar store (where I used to work 20 years ago) shopping for something else and I tried it just out of curiosity as they had just received it. My god. All guitars are unique but that one was truly exceptional. Quite probably the best guitar I have ever played. I wasn’t prepared financially for that, but I just had to buy it. Now, I’m obsessed with it, and I play it every time I can.
Agreed 💯!! It fits like a glove and the sound is so good!!! I was going to do this or the Gibson Adam Jones Standard. I figured it was going to be a no brainer for the Jones but wanted to try the Greeny out of curiosity. Tried them both at the store, and it ended up being a no brainer for the Greeny. Go figure!!! Great f’ing guitar!!!!
Great review as always. So basically you are buying a 50s Les Paul with some premium upgrades for $2-300 more. Probably worth it if you in the market and like the finish.
I have a ‘50’s standard that’s unbelievable but with a very ugly tobacco burst. I’d say I would definitely have paid extra for a lemonburst. This example looks great, but the ones I’ve seen online look a very ugly dark orange
if i was gonna buy one the standard would be it , but even it is overpriced , who in there right mind would pay 10-20-50 thousand dollars for a faux aged guitar , crazy world we live in , a faux aged guitar look similar to a real worn in guitar until up close and personal then it is obvious one is real wear and one is man made ..
After taking a dump all over the guitar before even playing it they then play it and find out its a great Guitar . They treated the greeny buckers like a joke but then actually played rhe guitar and found out the pickups are not cheap pickups. Automatically assumed the pickups were cheap because they were called greeny bucker even though the custom shop pickups are also called greeny buckers . They sound just like the pickups in the custom shop versions of this guitar because they are the same pickup .
Yes I agree ..started out very negative on the guitar..plug it in..those pups are awesome and they’re the same pups as the higher expensive models..I think it’s a decent rendition of the greeny/Moore Les Paul..being non custom shop…on par with slash guitar same price 3199….
Thats my dilemma. I have a current Epiphone November burst that I got 50% off retail for. I had it plek’d, bone nut and put in SD Slash pickups. Still came in under retail price but I actually wanted an AFD colour but they didn’t have it at 50%. Great guitar even for Epi My dilemma is now do I go for the Greeny Gibson or Gibson Slash AFD considering I have this Epi. I have one shot for the Gibson - $6000 here in Australia even with discount (retail 7200). I am confused AF as to which direction

Your review is overally nice man. But your info on different pickup usage seems uncorrect.
100% Marko 🙌. I couldn’t agree more mate. I was waiting for this guitar to drop and when it did I gotta say I was a little disappointed. The price to quality ratio is just nit appealing to me. Btw no one is talking about the Gary Moore Collectors Choice from 2010 (around then) which retailed for $9,995 I believe. It was looked on as been over priced when it came out (if you could believe that today eh?) and today it’s half the price of the cheaper ‘Greeny’. This one here in the video is a real nice guitar but it’s not a Greeny. Btw, something I noticed (been Irish myself). It seems like the amazing thing Gibson has done (by accident probably) is to turn on many new people to Gary Moore with releasing this new line (series) Of Greeny’s. I see them almost everyday online. How do I know they are new Gary Moore fans? They call him underrated. No one who grew up with Gary Moore or who has listened to his music for years would consider him under rated. He was an animal. A savage player. Definitely not under rated. So it’s great that Gibson has achieved this in the process of selling ridiculously over priced guitars. Gary Moore deserves to be heard, by EVERYBODY 🙌
Great review! Gibson are really cashing in on greeny! Looks a nice 50s standard but is it much better than the 50s faded les paul in satin finish ? Vintage do a nice greeny copy v100 in distressed finish for $500. A copy is still a copy be it 50k or $500.
I think it’s crazy the 50/60’s standard was 2699 new right back in May last year. Two price jumps since then. I literally got my 60’s standard the day before the price jump and I’m so happy I did 😅
Do Gibson Flip the the Magnet firstly to make it out of phase and secondly turn the pickup around? ( For visual affect) If you simply turn the pickup 180 deg in a pickup ring , it won't be out of phase with the other pickup. That's like turning a clock upside down and expecting the hands to move in the opposite direction. If you turn the pickup 180 deg in the pickup ring , sure, effectively you've flipped the magnet but you've also flipped the coils so the effect is nothing .
I think it’s a fine guitar..like the flame …that flipped magnet in front pickup is awesome that honk the middle position…the pickups are special…yeah they sold out quick…they are only 200 more than the standard or same as the Slash model….yes with Gibson I’ve noticed some on high end stuff like slash LP….the tops vary way too much…🤙🏻nice demo😊..agree as mentioned the overkill with a Hammet greeny is crazy….I’ll always refer to the guitar as Greeny/Moore….this is a regular guy lol…”greeny”….so it’s stripped down…Gibson started off ok with this Cesar…but he got greedy …the lawyers and doctors buy up those 20k 50k pcs as show pieces or greed investments….These are player guitars…but good one
That's how I see this. In the Fender world they call this a player plus. IMO this is the Gibson equivalent. Call it a Tribute plus or something because that is exactly what this is. A tribute to the Greeny.
I love the color and wood grain, but he’s right. It’s NOT a Greeny. Would I buy one? Possibly, only for the color/wood grain. I’ve purchased 3 Gibson’s for that very reason and I’m not disappointed at all.
I don't really agree with some of your comments at the start of the video about this guitar. I mean it's not a complete Greeny reissue, but the only thing that makes the original greeny special is the pick ups. There is a legendary back story on how the original pick ups on the "Greeny" were mis-wired in a repair, and according to the lore, that wiring accident is what gave the guitar it's spectacular sound... Specifically in the middle position. The whole point of this guitar is the "out of phase" pick ups. Not the neck, the pick ups. It's evident by your review of the sound, that they are on to something... Also, they use the exact same "greenbucker" picks up in the $50K and the $19K reissue versions of the "Greeny" Les Paul... You can compare specs on Gibsons webpage, and see that the pick ups are identical on all 3 Models. RU-vid won't allow me to post a link, but you can actually buy the Greenbucker pick ups independently on Gibsons webpage. So is it a greeny? Well, if you believe that the pick ups are the special sauce, then indeed it is a Greeny... Also the AAA top on that guitar is alot nicer than the one on the original Greeny. lol. Cheers!
If one is all for capitalism, I really don't understand the Gibson hate. Clearly the $50K version wasn't intended to be "accessible" and the $3200 version wasn't intended to be a replica. I wouldn't pay either price, but that doesn't make me hate Gibson. I'm just not going to be a buyer for these models at these prices and that's OK. When one steps back, I think we all understand Gibson is a corporation with investors who expect a return on capital. Expecting Gibson to behave otherwise is always going to lead to disappointment.
I really dig the duo, Marko and James doing videos together. I thoroughly enjoyed the unbiased and honest review of the guitar. So it is not Greeny, but nor is the price. What matters is that Gibson made a very good Les Paul that I am interested in.
@@mrmetal1276 true that but I also dig that out of phase middle position. Satin finish is a plus for me too. As you mentioned the jury is out if those are $700 worth!
I expect the thinking behind not making it "Greeny enough" is for us to lust after a better guitar. But man, they could have at least dyed the back, neck and headstock in cherry!
I've had one for a week now I can't stop playing it (I have 7 more Les Pauls) I don't care about price and all the anti Gibson crap. The standard Greeny is a fantastic guitar. Well Made. Top level, trust me👍🏻
@@damienhick1647 i have an Epiphone Slash Rosso Corsa and a 2017 Slash Anaconda and a 2020 Gibson Slash Victoria. The neck profiles are about the same. The Epiphone Slash & Anaconda have the Seymour Duncan Alnico pro's in them...great pickups! I don't like the Gibson Slashbuckers that are in the Victoria. The greeny Les Paul sounds killer with those pickups. They sound great clean and when ya add gain it's a beast..
The pickups I in thise guitar are not a gimmick. The pickups in the custom shop versions are also called Greeny buckers . It's not the same as with the slash pickups at all . The greeny buckers are clones of the PAFs in the real guitar and they were designed by Jarred Brandon and he cloned the actual pafa in the original and Kirk was involved in their design and rejected the first several attempts .. The custom shop versions of the pickups are also called greeny buckers .
Nice top, But Really not much ,Fix the pickups the middle selection should sound beautiful and jazzy bluesy not tinny and thin.Yall are theres not 1000.00 guitar there ,No not jelious I have a white beauty ,Wouldent trade it for 4 0f them ,But my custom is old Have a natural like R .Rodes but its old dident cost 3000.00
I purchased this I’ve played guitar a long time 68 …This is a joy to play the neck is awesome the flipped magnet in front pickup is awesome in middle position that “honk” these pickups are awesome …it’s on par price wise with Slash Les Paul..both are beautiful..I know it’s pricey..but if u love that greeny thing …and the flame top is very nice..I’m not cray about satin top ..but overall it’s a guitar I pick up everyday since I have it since the 13th of April..
Great and thorough review guys. But for the life of me, I don’t understand why you felt the need to put delay in chorus all over the guitar before we could actually hear what it sounded like on its own merit… So for that, I will deduct one point From this review.
I'm sad to see Gibson doing a lot of silly things again. Examples are things like custom colors in fauscia pink and blue. The lp light series in goofy colors. The Supreme. Wate if money. Then stopping production on the firebird and sg junior. I love gibson. I worry Cesar was not the best choice.. I forsee them losing the market they just got back. Losing touch already. Thank you, Marco, for your honest videos.
First time here, really enjoyed sitting in on the conversation - makes a nice change from a lot of the 'salespersons' purportedly 'reviewing' guitars. This looks like a lovely instrument, I personally like the finish and I have heard a few good audio demos on YT. I only own 1 Gibson, it's a 1968 Custom I bought 3rd hand in 1974 when our band was kicking off in NZ. Played it live a lot and then in 82 when the band folded and I went into soundtrack / album production I hung onto it and gradually picked up various other guitars along the way. I smiled when I heard the 'I never really use the middle position' comment - I used it a lot in the band thru a nice old Fender rig for that 'chimey' arpeggio chord thing - I grew up with the Beatles so George was my hero at that time. Peter Green probably my No. 2 in terms of the 'pop / blues rock' stuff so the Greeny thing has been on my mind the last couple of years with all the online chatter about it and my solution has been to grab the Epiphone / Gibson 1959 LP hybrid (Cherry, satin finish!) which I am enjoying. My plan is to get the Monty's Bethnal Greens, which seem to be the most interesting boutique take on the Greeny middle position thing and see how I get on! Thanks again for a fun chat - maybe I'll get around to grabbing one of these Gibsons if they turn up here in HK . . . cheers!
So it's a LP Standard 50's Neck in "Greenie Burst Satin", with an AAA top, ABR bridge, reversed neck pickup and mismatched knobs. Not a bad guitar at all, but just call it for what it is... another thing that bugged me is that the hardware is chrome, not nickel like the CS and original, cheap thing to correct. The neck profile and wiring were missed opportunities, it ends up looking they just wanted to rip off the unaware. Suhr and Fender have been using neck profile scanning and CNCing them on their artist copies for years. That would be the best, but you can do it by hand... "just try, Gibson".
I got a defective one and also the top looked way too light and the weight was too light. Very disappointing. The guitar didn't look or feel worth the price to me at all.
It' has a higher grade top and it has custom shop pickups . They are a higher grade pickup then BB1 and BB2 and even a higher grade pickup then custombuckers . The pickup being reverse mounted has nothing to do with the price increase and it has nothing to do with the guitar being out of Phase.. it's the neck pickup manager being installed in reserve that puts it out of Phase
@@adamwatson6916 Sorry bro but this guitar has nothing custom or custom shop. Like he said before, it's just a regular faded off the rack, they just flip the pickup, put some different tuners and call it a day, and of course, they charge you a big extra for that "greeny" name, wich doesn't appear anywhere on the guitar, not even a sticker behind the headstock. It's just a big ripoff like everything that Gibson does these days.
Right. Since this isn't the relic version anyway, you could just get the 50s standard and turn/mod the pickup. And you'd get gloss finish and correct color on the back of the body and neck too. Paying more to get less, but at least with a famous name?
The Greenies look very cool no doubt. And I definitely don’t have any issue w/Kirk agreeing to go w/this Gibson release. Good on him and go after that income. The woods I’m sure are top notch. Honestly though IMO these are not worth their asking price unless you’re a major collector type and then it would make sense I suppose. When I make that statement, I’m talking about the $20k version and not this one. This version is Gibson’s “pity-fu{k”. However, if you’re gonna go w/the mega high end replica fine, go for it. But why toss out these other knock offs of a knock off? I have a LP Classic from 2001 that has the Premium Plus top. It’s one of the best LP I’ve ever played. I installed SD Antiquity pups and honestly it looks cooler IMO than this one. Man, you guys are spot on here and thank you for calling this crap out. I think Gibson is putting out some really nice instruments right now but this is just stupid. Again, great job guys. Facts
Marko , im a huge Gibson fan ...but to be honest , it looks and sounds like their 1000 dollar tribute series , with mixed knobs ....id rather have seen a 7k custom shop light relic .
they lost me when they didnt include the aged case...i wonder how much the 50k version's pickups cost because they are different in the 20k version and different in this version as well how much do they save?
Let's say Inspired by Greeny :) . How much does it weigh? The V/T knobs are like that because Gary wanted to tell in dark stage where his hand is. Faber VOS ABR-1 chrome bridge, tail piece can be a good option for you. It is actually a very cost effective improvement if you do not care about Authentic Gibson parts. They look the same but better tone than Gibson.
the million dollar question for me... and I would like someone to answer me since I am from the Canary Islands and here we will never see that guitar and we can only buy it in an online store, and the question is... the fingerboard of Does this Gibson greenie have manufacturing defects? I mean tool marks on the fingerboard or on the contrary does it come without problems? I can buy a PRS with my eyes closed but a Gibson scares me to death and I've seen $7000 Gibsons with tool marks on the fingerboard and I didn't buy them for that very reason... my second question is this.gibson won't be a basic Les Paul standard faded but with different pickups and something else to disguise what it really is?😢 By the way, thank you very much for your honest review, you help us a lot, a great job, bro.,🤘🏻
Thank you for this nice review. I understand what you are saying, this guitar not being a real "Greeny". On the other hand, having the pickups wired and installed that way kind of makes it unique, and that part is carried over from "Greeny", and I also found that middle position very unique and very usable, especially on clean settings or only a little bit of crunch. Did you ever weigh the guitar? I would be curious how much it actually weighs. I think the original "Greeny" is just under 9 pounds.
@@THEVATICANTS Thanks, wow, I didn't realize you actually had more than just one copy to check out. But the one from the video surely is really nice. Thanks again for the video, it was fun to watch.
Just the fact that you mentioned the word Slash, 50 times, says a lot. The Slash edition from 2008, set the standard, I own one! Kirk can keep his guitars, and all the drama that goes with them! I never had to go thru the nonsense of buying my guitar, I just bought it, and I’m still enjoying it today. Slash is not a prima Donna, like Kirk Hammett!
Thats my dilemma. I have a current Epiphone November burst that I got 50% off retail for. I had it plek’d, bone nut and put in SD Slash pickups. Still came in under retail price but I actually wanted an AFD colour but they didn’t have it at 50%. I have one shot for the Gibson - $6000 here in Australia even with discount (retail 7200). I am confused AF as to which direction.
@@damienhick1647 I’m not a big Kirk Hammett fan, a lot of the cost of his signature guitars is attributed to the aging process, witch makes no sense to me, I like a brand new perfect guitar, that I can ding it up myself, or try not too! It’s your choice, but I own a Slash edition, and it’s my work horse, sounds great, plays great, I paid 3500.$ for it, and with all the money I saved, I bought a couple Gibson acoustic guitars, one is the Slash edition J45, it’s your call, I just don’t think the Kirk guitar would make me any happier….
The way you people blindly shit on Kirk hammet is hilarious . Zero drama in the man’s life ever . The story with the guitar had nothing to do with drama . I’m sure he’s just fine 💀 slash & Kirk are close to the same level @ this point . Kirk is one of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure to meet .
I'm only 12 mins in so maybe you get to this later but I was under the impression these pickups were the same ones in the 20K/50K versions? Do you get into how the pickups are different from the USA to the Murphy Lab / special version ? Thanks!
Intonation problems on this guitar. Some barred chords sound perfectly in tune but open chords are out of tune. But that can be fixed with the bridge intonation screws
I have one here. Plays nice, but not a Greeny. Kind of a scam. The build quality on mine is not the best that they can do either. Poorly finished nut, major scraping marks on the bindings and not feeling this satin finish on the headstock and top. My top figuring is ok. Although, it plays and sounds nice. Would look good after it is played a lot and ages. These will be everywhere on the used market, wait until they drop below 2K to get one. Sorry Gibson. I am a big fan, but a little disappointed with this one.
so it is not a "stunning" Greenie... well it's not a Greenie at all... but it's a nice Standard... is it worth $300 more then a run of the mill 50's Std hmmm if you want that Greenie inspired top and those knobs that's kinda where it is at.
I don't know what the fuss is all about, the people who spent $20k on "Greeny" didn't want to have to spend an extra $30k to have dinner with Kirk lol. That's one very expensive dinner man. All joking aside, there isn't one average Joe that can afford the "Greeny" experience. Coming down to $3,199 you lost everything "Greeny" except for the two mismatched knobs and a neck PUP reversed. Just buy a used 50's Standard, ding it up the way you like and there are Greeny Replicas in PUPS to buy.
You can get a decent guitar for less than 500 bucks, put the appropriate pickups in and other shananigans for like, say, 300-400 bucks and for under 1 grand, you have the "Greeny experience". So why waste 50 grand on that? The sound is what matters in the end.
It's not true that the newer slash core guitars don't have AAA tops anymore. I just seen a brand new one with 2023 serial number at my local guitar shop and it had a flame top that I woke fall a 4A flame. Yes there are some that don't have 3A tops but there are many that still do.
I have an anaconda burst from 2021 that has an insane top. It took a few months of looking. It’s a mixed bag. There are some diamonds out there, but sadly most of the tops are muck. I have seen some terrible AFD bursts out there. This does t take away from playability, though. 😉👻
it has "Greenie Buckers" though, can you confirm that thats not based on the MRI and X -ray scans they done on the greenie? Is it just a 50's faded? Because it looks otherwise to be a new guitar with the "Greenie Buckers" in it. that you cannot buy on the aftermarket.
It's meant to be a different feel. For me it doesn't cut it to rationalize. It's emotional. And this works for one and not the other. But tonewise... A 2016 or 2018 Standard does that and much much more with Out of Phase option, 2 different Single Coil sounds for neck, 1 for bridge. But funny enough, that's not what traditionalists like. My 2018 can sound like a burst or like that Greeny. And still It's neck and finish is different. And so every guitar inspires differently. Go for what is right for you!
@THE VATICANTS I heard these HJS were far more open sounding than the regular JVM. Are you happy with the Friedman ? Or is there something missing to you ?
I think the guitar looks great. Kudos to you guys for calling it what it is, a Faded 50’s standard pretty much. Doesn’t mean it isn’t nice though. Gibson just can’t seem to get of their own way sometimes.
Funny thing people don't realize is that there is ZERO objective rating standard for tops. Anything from A - AAAAA to "Museum Grade". It all means absolutely nothing objectively speaking.
Satin top yuck. Better off getting the R9 custom shop. 20 grand for what? Insane idea. Bad reviews everywhere people are disappointed in the 3 grand model. No war marks either. Much prefer Gary Moore to Kirk Hammett for sure. I can’t get used to seeing him playing angry music with it either for some reason. I must be getting older😃
This is an outrageous money grab , who the hell out there is spending this sort of money on a guitar??? They must be either, accountants looking to make a quick buck, bedroom rockers or pub rockers because rock star users invariably get them for free because they act as brand ambassadors. Any pub rocker or bedroom rocker spending this sort of money on a guitar is an idiot because they are obviously spending more than they can afford (no one should be spending 1000's on a luxury item (especially if they are not a pro musician or competent guitarist) when they have other more important commitments) and definitely way more than they need to spend especially if they are half decent players. You could purchase a Vintage brand PGM V100 Icon distress guitar for example, which not only looks similar but will give you the Greeny out of phase sound in spades, for peanuts in comparison. I spent an extra £2500 because I wanted to go on an ego trip and have Gibson on the headstock, its just plain dumb!
I have a Gibson Les Paul Standard 50's and an Eastman SB59v, and the Eastman is the superior guitar build-wise. And with the Lollar Imperial pickups, the tones I get are at least on par with my Standard. Of course, that's subjective as far as tone is concerned. My Eastman has far better sustain than my Gibson and stays in tune much better. That's not to say my Gibson is a bad guitar. It's a great guitar. But IMO, my Eastman is the better of the two.
Yo want greeny experience ? call kirk and see if he can sell it to you. Why you want something that you have never played? Teste are differents, you might not even like the original greeny. If you like a look and a specific neck, buy it.
"Relic'd" Gibson reissues, are nothing more than "authentic counterfeit guitars". It maked me laugh knowing all the people with more money than sense paid $50k for something as fake as an Ali Express Zakk Wylde bullseye. And for what? So they can hang it on the wall and pretend its the real thing? haha
I guess im the exception because i love Les Paul/Gibsons and i love PRSs. But i like the company PRS more than Gibson. Mostly because Paul had to suceed in the shadows and try to do something new enough and his guitars won me over when i was biased against them. He earned it.
I haven't heard of the Vaticants, (maybe they're big in some parts of the world?) so surely you are making serious money from some other business? I'm very jealous.
"Blows the slash standard out of the water" . With all due respect, I have to disagree with that statement. Right now, this guitar retails for 3400 Euros on Thomann in Europe .It s straight up robbery for an upgraded 50 s faded with nice pickups and a better top. Which let s be honest that s what this is. The slash one retails for 3000 and with that guitar at least you are getting a proper gloss finish that doesn t look like an epiphone lazarus. Not to mention that with the spare cash you can get yourself the new slash duncans .
I really dislike that they went for satin on this one. I was waiting for this for a long time. Tried it at the store, but the satin made it feel cheap for me
Very good review I enjoyed the blunt honesty. I'm a bit confused however because I thought these were the same pickups that are in the more expensive Greenies. If that's not the case what is the different? Because they both have the same labels in them don't they?
Yeah it's very confusing and apparently no one knows, I was told one thing and others differently..... isn't that exactly also part of the problem, right?
