My husband and I took that tour back before they closed the Memphis Store. All the staff members were doing a great job working on one guitar at a time. It was meticulous work! Best guitar built in the USA! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love the way the guy talking about the truss rods had mastered the art of speaking to foreigners, randomly drop words and assume it's easier to understand!
How did I not know that a Les Paul is not a solid piece of wood? Just a hollow core with veneer glued on, huh. Seems like the standard should cost much less.
Had a 1973 gold top les paul beautiful played great some times watching this really mass production still make very good guitars its like any guitar companies make good one's and bad ones living on old name old ones seem better what I've played the Japanese walking round can make some great guitars over the years take a look at the yamaha top sg.s great playing guitars and there sa 200 semi beautiful remember gibson send guitars out to Japan same parts in some of them to be cheaper there's some great guitar companies now not like years ago alot of small companies making brilliant guitars but gibson still can turn out some great guitars
Unlike most of the cable "How do they..." shows that are majority disposable items or ones with a short life span, these guitars are any where from $500 up to $8000 for the top of the line. Not exactly items you buy once a month or even once a year so it amazes me to see a assembly line cranking them out. And this is just ONE manufacturer and not even the counterfeits! Who are buying all these guitars? After 30+ years I have accumulated over 40! I know there are a lot of guitar nutts like me but surely we cannot be buying all of these guitars.
I've always wondered the same thing lol I am buying my first Gibson in a couple of weeks (hopefully) and it will be my first and last haha Not spending another $2000 - $3000 for sure. Maybe an Epiphone, yes.
My son is 18, been playing since 15, self taught - he has 5 electric, two acoustic, 2 bass and 3 amps (shortly to be 4)... bought with his own work / pay largely. The guitar is not dead. Neither is Gibson. goo.gl/7bAX7X - this week live gigging with his J45 :)

Those are ES-Les Pauls. They made a semi hollowbody LP from 2014-2016 or 17 similar in construction to the ES-335. All other LP models are still solid body, at least the ones they make now.
I liked how Jim the R&D engineer spoke to the Chinese as if removing some pronouns, as if that would make them understand. I was waiting for him to say "Neck go body, so horny make guitar long time"
They stated that they finish 60 guitars a day. This means 420 per week, 1680 per month and 20,160 per year. So income of minimum (2000$ PER GUITAR) 40,320,000$ PER YEAR.
I sexually identify as an oven mitt no every guitar that leaves the factor is sold. Its the retailer that might only sell 40% and $2k number is retail price. The whole sale price would be less how much I don't know, but Gibson guitars are profitable. It was not the guitar division that had to apply for bankruptcy it was their other division that needed to.
Have to say I am surprised Gibson are giving an in depth tour to a Chinese audience... you know they are the best in the world at de-construction and re-construction at half the cost right? Craft skills are no protection, they have villages painting old master copies by the lorry full.
Spartanm333. This is a Japanese tour. Since the 70’s, the Japanese guitar manufacturers have made amazing Gibson copies, “hence the lawsuit era” guitars that some are worth more than a real Gibson of the era. Japanese are traditional skilled craftsmen. If Gibson decided to license a new Orville line from Japan, I would definitely be interested.
@@edwardmonsariste4050 - indeed mate - I own a lawsuit Fender Super-Strat HSS by Young Chang circa late 80's - my son (who wasn't born when I bought it) has a 2017 Fender MEX Stratocaster HSS in a similar cream white colour. The Fenix is this model sans the red metallic paint - bit.ly/2TbfcLa. We sit them next to each other in a guitar stand and they are quite similar in the body although the YC is touch larger, made of alder. Both have maple bolt on necks. Arguably the YC is better equipped even today coming with a bound rosewood fret board, more flexible pickup controls, Floyd Rose and a less fussy head stock - the pots and selector switches needed contact cleaner after 25 years in a loft although the neck has remained true - the YC plays fine. I have a had a few discussions online about the YC since I got it back down for my son to play... it was second generation release produced after they decided to up the anti and provide more than Fender USA themselves - like the hum-bucker mod in the bridge (which Fender later copied into their official range) and Floyd Rose. It helped that Young Chang had the actual specs - as they were the appointed Squier manufacturer at the time :) Many argue, and I tend to agree, that it was way beyond a Squire of the time (same retail price) and knocking on the door of US Fender Strats for build quality. The fact mine is still playing well after all these years tends to give testament to that. Still it is a bit of a Frankenstein with the Jackson style head stock and odd controls = 3 x 3 way switches. I agree, Japanese guitars can be very high quality and TBH, so can Korean depending on the factory and the budget they are allowed. The 2018 Bernie Marsden (artiste edition) Limited PRS SE is a case in point - based on his late 50's Gibson LP (The Beast) it has a flame maple top over mahogany, creme binding, a period fat neck (worn in satin lacquer on the palm side - nice touch), quality hardware and high quality PRS pickups - in England I can get one for £500, about $730 and it will beat the crap out of a USA Gibson Les Paul Standard on output, tone and tuning stability - and I say that as a Gibson LP owner.
Spartanm333 Man I think those visitors are from Japan... And I want to say, everything’s got a price. In this world, exist good quality guitars and bad quality guitars. Being afraid of chibson winning the real one is such a kinda Insult to the American Brand. No mention of the dramatical difference of their price.
Why are there inconsistencies in the Potentiometers values ? I thought Gibson would produced them accurately for their pickups since they make everything in the factory.
U must be kidding telling Japanese how to build guitars unless these visitors are lawyers and doctors. U know what i mean if u look at those Greco ,Tokai and yamaha les paul that can hold its ground against American ones.
guys, the plant makes 125,000 guitars a year. There are 3 billion people in the world. What percentage play guitar? This really isn't many high end guitars. I'm sure the Gibson/Epiphone plant makes many more guitars, for the average and beginner guitar players. Then you have Fender, Guild, Martin, and dozens of other companies.
@@PillsBuryDoughBoy_ besides that you could just buy better pickups and install them on a ephiphone. Gibson and ephiphone really are not that different in quality guitars, the only reason I would buy a gibson is because its American made.
@@PillsBuryDoughBoy_ nothing that's the point its just I would prefer larbor hard working Americans making my products not not Chinese factory workers who make almost nothing those poor people and them using literally any scraps from us to make pickups with Chinese pot metal pickups which are less conducive so the pickups are alittle softer and lower toned than american guitar pickups
Oh, ok. Thanks. That's a new one on me. ES Les Paul is a model I'm not familiar with. Didn't know Gibson was making that.... How long has the ES Les Paul been in production?
Those inquisitive Japanese tourist dudes are soaking up all the Gibson manufacturing techniques they can store on their phones, only to return home and make knock-offs.
Gibson has already commissioned Japanese to OEM production in the late 1980s (after the law suit era). In the story I heard, a Japanese (probably Fujigen) instructed a CNC machining to US guitar manufacturer. Also, Japanese customer pointed out the fact that the number of turns per coil of the old pickup (i.e.P.A.F.) was not even, and Gibson adopted it. Everything is give and take. The people in this video are members of the Gibson Guitar fansite.
I just returned a 2018 Gibson es-335 1963 reissue because of poor quality. I was very sad and disappointed, this was a dream guitar for me! But at $5000usd it should be perfect. It pains me to say, that a Chinese fake has better quality than the Memphis factory.
man i own 3 gibsons a 1957 lp special, a 56 lp jr, not reissues and a 2016 lp studio....sorry dude except for the electronics epiphone is better guitar.gibson is going out the door.
I’d like to see them use Hide Glue for the body construction instead of the vinyl based white glue that never, ever fully dries! The Hide Glue is the major reason why the old semi’s sounded better from day one cause of the use of a protein based glue(Hide Glue). Hide Glue crystallizes and pulls the wood together when it dries! White glue(vinyl based glue) never fully dries!
Dave Whatever lol that’s what I had thought so I was agreeing w ya!!! I love my Gibson. I actually prefer my fender strat over my Eastman.. it’s all preference. But Gibson reigns king of tone and sustain in my mind lol
Gibson has very few quality inspectors compared to Epiphone. About 75% of the employees at Epiphone are quality control inspectors. Epiphone quality is very, very high but they use mostly crappy components. Almost every problem with Gibson guitars can be attributed to poor quality control.
