How do they get the Pin # if you have to scratch off to see it??

I got a Vanilla brand Visa gift card and put $400 on it. I didn't even get a chance to ise it before my balance was zero and my card had become invalid.

In Australia the card number and PIN are not on the packaging: they're sealed inside and tampering would be very evident. Why do US companies put this crucial information on the outside?

Today I bought a gift card that didn't have a pill or scratch off sticker at all when to redeem the card and it keeps on saying invalid
