Gifting beers to the HUNT 1000 riders - A bikepacking adventure

The middle of Summer can be really hot in the mountains of Kosciuszko. There can also be heaps of annoying flies. So, all through winter I was planning on heading back to the mountains to do another bikepacking trip before summer. Josh had a weekend in mind, so we locked it in. The weather forecast was for lots of rain but that's never stopped us before. During the week leading up to the ride I noticed the Hunt 1000 bikepacking event had started. Conditions were looking similar to my February trip in which I left a beer in a hut for whoever found it. with a note with my details to see if I got a message from them. It was a fun experiment. This gave me the idea to do it again, but instead take a few beers and leave them for the riders doing the event. The hut I planned to camp at was roughly 800km into a 1000km route. I'm sure the riders would have loved a beer by that stage. I had concerns that leaving beers in the hut would mean leaving rubbish in a hut. Would people drink the beer and just leave the empty can? I have a friend named Mattie that had done the ride a few years ago, I decided to get his thoughts on riders carrying out the empty cans. He thought the riders would be fine with it. Later that day Capital Brewing had just shared a video I posted on Instagram, it was one of their beers I left in the hut in February. Mattie saw this and decided to let Capital Brewing know of my plans. 5 minutes later they had offered to supply the beers and this idea just took off. I borrowed a friend's bike trailer, picked up a case of beers from the brewery. I made some camera mounts to film the trailer. I then decided the trailer would look to empty so I bought a second case. When we got to the Round Mountain carpark the trailer didn't fit on my bike because it was hitting my derailleur. Luckily, I bought my big backpack and put half a case in that and the other case on the bike. We were off. I had 24 beers on me which is a new record for a bikepacking trip. This video is basically a documentary on my trip with the additional story of delivering the beers.
If you're interested in doing the hunt 1000 here is the link to their website.

As a participant of the Hunt 1000 2023, word spread quickly down the trail that you had put beers out in the Hut. Man, I rode 6 days straight in wet weather thinking of those beers, only to turn around before Valentine Hut as the rivers we getting too crazy to cross. Dan Hunt did an amazing job rerouting the event 3 times with the different challenges thrown at us. The beers and burgers at Capital Brewery were so worth the 1000kms lead-in! cheers for your effort and the great vids.

Mate, the stories I'm hearing about the weather are brutal. It's a shame you didn't get to continue through the Jagungal but better to be safe. On a positive note, at least the beers at the brewery were cold 😂 Reading your comment makes me laugh, 6 days of wet weather thinking about the beers. Brutal but funny when you say it like that. Well done on a solid ride.

Hi Tim, thank you for your generosity I was one of the lucky ones to score a can. Two of our party went out and back to pick them up for us. Much appreciated given the weather conditions. Cheers Ken

Awesome Ken, glad you enjoyed a beer. There are a few stories floating around of the river crossings getting to dangerous to cross so it’s good to hear riders that actually got to them. Cheers 👍

Thanks Tim, love the vid (all of them actually) while on the Hunt1000 I heard there were beers on the trail. Myself and Simon planned to find this trail magic, but after multiple river crossings at freezing nipple line and travelling at 2km/hr, the 3km detour and the soul crushing possibly of finding empty cans would of broke us 😅 . Because I was in survival mode at Gray Mare hut, watching this back feels like you were riding with us, and it allows me to resoak in the scenery again. Your efforts were not in vain. Love your work mate.

Nipple height water is brutal, I can only imagine the struggles with these deep crossings, steep hills, the cold, already having done many days on the bike. I completely understand why you wouldn’t bother doing the detour. Saying that it’s probably the flattest and easiest section of trail out there 😂 sorry to rub it in. Thanks for commenting, I’m loving hearing all these stories. Gets me stoked to maybe try the hunt myself one day. Cheers 🍻

I loved the scene when you were in the tent zoned out staring off into space mindlessly eating chips. Then you thought "Maybe I start drinking those beers????". Made me laugh out loud, excellent video, thank you

Haha, I was a bit lost. I got given the 16 pack of beers and also carried out 8 other beers I purchased. My plan was to drink 4 over the weekend and leave the other 4 with the 16 pack. I really couldn’t work out what to do. A scene or 2 before that I say something like “my plans are falling apart” I then turn and put my hand on a 4 pack before telling myself no! I find this so funny because I was fighting hard not to drink them 😂 Cheers for watching 👍

Another great video Tim. Thank you so much. Dan Hunt has another ride called Sydney to Summit. From the Opera House to the summit of Kozzie. Might be worth a look into! I’ll be going that’s for sure. Appreciate your time and effort going into these videos.

Cheers Paul. The Sydney to Summit is very tempting. This might seem strange saying this so early but I think the schedule will fit my 2025 plans well. I think I'll give it a miss this year as I've already got lots of plans for 2024 and unfortunately annual leave doesn't grow on trees. We'll see what happens though. Cheers.

Absolutely applaud what you did there, great idea, and also great to hear of the brewery supporting you. Pity the route for the Hunt had to be changed. The alpine region is a magical place, I've spent many years walking around it and still have fresh areas to go see. As for the plovers - they're just insane birds.
@advanturest
@advanturest 9 месяцев назад
Thanks mate, It is a beautiful place. I have so many more areas to explore. It's going to take years and many trips. It does suck that the route was changed but I can't complain. I normally like it when things go wrong as it adds to the story. In this case it killed it a bit but I'm glad a few riders got there and sent their photos. What is it with those plovers. they seem to be everywhere. I go down the south coast every year and I always thought they were a coastal bird. I swear we see them on every trip anywhere I go 😂
@IanC-id6ro
@IanC-id6ro 9 месяцев назад
According to the "good book", by which I mean The Complete Guide to Australian Birds. There are 9 varieties of plover and to add to the confusion, very often what most of us (including me) are calling a plover is actually called a lapwing. They're found pretty much right across Australia. They can be a very aggressive/protective bird, especially when nesting (on the ground for crying out loud!) When I lived and worked at Menai (southern Sydney), there was a pair of plovers nesting on one of the playing fields of The Ridge. No one could play on the field, and the grounds men couldn't mow it. But then magpies also get pretty aggro during nesting, and they definitely have something against cyclists.@@advanturest

@@IanC-id6ro some interesting facts there. I’m actually quite fascinated with all these birds I see so I’ve just bought a big zoom lens. I want to be able to get some photos and maybe a book of birds so I can work out what I’m looking at. I love how you put southern Sydney in brackets after Menai. I grew up at Bangor and went to Lucas Heights high school. I know the area very well. Whenever I told people I lived at Bangor they had no idea where it was 😂

It's my wife who is into the bird watching, I'll ask her what she suggests re bird identification books. I've gotten similar reactions when I told people where I (used) to live. But I clarified that with adding "within sight of ANSTO nuclear reactor". Got some interesting responses from that.@@advanturest

They're not silly, and that's fine with me. It might not be that generous from their pocket but for me and the riders it was. I had bought beers for this idea and when they decided to supply them, I left mine at home and will save them for another trip. If someone gave me one beer, I'd think they're generous. 😂 I was pretty excited to be given some free beers. Even when I knew I was giving them all away. It just felt right! Cheers mate

Hi Tim. Loving your commentary and videos! Very professional- would you mind telling me a little more about your camera gear set up and editing software? Cheers in advance!
@advanturest
@advanturest 8 месяцев назад
Hi Michelle. Absolutely, I love talking cameras. My main camera is the Canon R6. On it 95% of the time is an older EF mount 24-70mm f2.8. I love the camera but it is a bit big for bikepacking. Something I’m happy to deal with but not for everyone. I also carry a tiny RF 16mm prime lens which is a good little wide angle for tight spaces or when I’m “vlogging”. It’s also good for Astro Photography. My other camera is an action camera. It’s the DJI Action 4. I’ve only had this for a few months and before that I was using the GoPro 8 which still gets used. I shoot in 4K at 25fps on both cameras, sometimes 50fps on the R6 if I want to slow the footage down while editing. I also shoot in the log format on both cameras, if you’re not sure what that is, it’s just a really flat colour profile that can be colour graded while editing. It lets you create a desired look. I’m not that great at it but I love tinkering with the image. For editing. I use Adobe Premiere Pro. It’s cloud based so has a subscription. While I have mostly no issues with it, If I was to start again I’d probably try Davinci Resolve. The Adobe creative cloud subscription I use costs about $80 a month and for a hobbyist like myself it’s very expensive. Davinci Resolve has a free version and paid version. The paid version is about $500 but once you have it there are no more costs. I believe you even get free updates. I can go on and on about different things like microphones, ND filters, etc. but not sure how much detail you want. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers Tim

@@rockbottomayres15 Awesome, I have no idea what the Ace Pro is like but from what I’ve seen it looks pretty good. It wasn’t available when I got the DJI and to be honest it wasn’t even on my radar. One thing I don’t like about the DJI and GoPro is the low light footage I get. They both have really good stabilisation but for that to work you need a fast shutter speed. In low light the image can get blurry because the cameras use a slow shutter speed to let more light in to the sensor. Because of this slower shutter speed each frame can get blurry. The Insta 360 Ace Pro does it differently. It keeps a fast shutter speed and uses its powerful processor to denoise each frame. That one feature is awesome but I’ve seen some other cool things it can do. Including a microphone adaptor you can buy. I wish the DJI had this. Wind noise is the biggest pain when riding bikes and trying to film. I think you will like Ace Pro. Enjoy! And thanks for the kind words 👍

@@HoorooAdventures-li8pg unfortunately none. I pay a subscription to Epidemic Sound and have been for years. I’d prefer not to but it’s just easier to have a big collection of music that I know is good to use. On my old channel I got a heap of videos shut down because of copyright strikes. Just depends on the artist I believe. Anyway I haven’t looked into it for years. I think it costs me about $20 a month which is nothing compared to cost of everything else these days. Sorry can’t help you on this one.
