The much forgotten prefecture, north of Gifu is waiting to be discovered. From hiking hills through forrest and lake, to 1000 meter plus mountains for weekend hiking, there is so much to do in Gifu.
This drive starts still in Aichi prefecture, to the north of of Komaki city and we had north through the semi-suburban, semi-countryside areas. Absolutely beautiful.
Something about castles get me going. There are no castles in America. America does skyscrapers, and that's cool but they aren't old and full of history like Japanese castles are and do.
The view from the top of Gifu castle is quite spectacular. You can see Inuyama castle and Komaki castle in the same eye line. The Kiso river and even downtown Nagoya in the far background. Hiking to the top of Gifu castle takes about an hour and is not difficult. Plus, if you want a more direct route to the top, park and take the ropeway.
