Before Gil and Orli Shaham became internationally known performers, they were budding talents on the Young Artists Showcase. In this performance celebrating the 38th anniversary of Bob Sherman's weekly program, the musical siblings Gil (violin) & Orli (piano) perform Dvořák's Sonatina, Op. 100 live in ‪@GreeneSpaceNY‬.

Dvorak has to just love the way this was performed. He was all about wanting his compositions to be performed with balance and teamwork, no matter what type of composition it was. This is the perfect TEAM for this one!

I love this piece, partly because it’s easy enough for me to play, but also because Dvorak wrote it while looking at the inspirational beauty of Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis, just a few blocks from my home.

I had the honor of attending several of Gil's concerts. What is most unique about his presence on stage was his ability to perform and engage with the audience on a deep personal level. He literally picks out individuals in the crowd and makes sincere eye contact with them as he plays, almost on a telepathic level. I have attended countless legendary violinist's concerts with upclose seats and never felt so close and connected to the soloist as with Gil.

Absolutely delightful performance for WQXR, my old classical music station in NY. Even the relatively minor pieces by Dvorak are masterful. BTW, for those who are unaware, Orli is Gil's sister.

My 5 year old daughter is working on this piece and it really helps to see how the professional uses their bow and bow distribution, which is very hard for my daughter to remember. It is amazing to watch his right arm and it creates such a beautiful sound!

Is this one of the composer’s pieces with American Indian influences or themes? Maybe there are some subtleties. I’m not schooled in classical music, but interested to learn. Thank you.
@M_SC

It was written when he lived in the USA and was supposed to be trying to create an American style of classical music. As to your specific point there is controversy.

tempi too fast in my personal view - consequently hasty and superficial
@MrFpam
@MrFpam 5 лет назад
You would be wise to keep your opinion to yourself. Gil Shaham is one of the finest violinists and certainly very musical. It may be faster than you are used to , but that doesn't make it hasty, and much less superficial.
@andreasneumann
@andreasneumann 5 лет назад
@@MrFpam This would not change my humble opinion, and there is no reason to hide it.
@MrFpam
@MrFpam 5 лет назад
@@andreasneumann You may think the tempi are too fast, but your conclusion that the performance is hasty and superficial is not warranted. It reflects badly on you, indicating arrogance or ignorance or both. Have you studied or played the piece? I have, and although i would not play the opening so fast I would certainly not dismiss Gil Shham's performance as hasty and superficial. I know this would not change your opinion, but it does not seem humble to me.
