before watching this film, I couldn't stand DiCaprio: I was a teenager, and I thought that Leo was famous just because he was handsome, and the other teenage girls loved him. (I thought he was what today you'd call "a Justin Bieber"). Then I watched this film, and I was struck: DiCaprio was AMAZING. Since then, he has become my favourite actor. He truly is the best actor of his generation

Darlene Cates astounds me every time I watch this movie. You get the impression that she'd been acting for 20 years, and never guess that this was her debut performance.There are so few films that call for actresses like her, especially for such a central role, and the ones that do tend to scale back the more extreme aspects of the characters, like Momma's obesity or Arnie's developmental delay. The Gilbert Grape filmmakers didn't care if some of their audience felt socially or emotionally uncomfortable watching it, and I admire that. They could've hired a well-known actress and put her in a fat suit, but there would have been this layer of fantasy that obstructed the audience's view due to their knowledge that Momma was really a slim, famous lady just pretending. It might have made it easier to focus on Momma's personality and character development, as opposed to getting hung up on her appearance. But they cast Darlene Cates instead, and her performance forces you to see her how Gilbert sees her, not as the mere visual spectacle that most people consider her to be. She was a great and underappreciated talent.

I wish I could go back to 1993. Life was so much simpler then. It truely was. This movie makes me nostalgic for my youth. Such a great movie that's really underappreciated and almost seems forgotten.

Fun fact: Leo has actually turned down an offer from Disney channel at that time waiting to audition for this part. He was just 16 years old when he made a life changing decision that shaped the direction of his acting career.

I was NOT expecting him to be in Jack Sparrow get-up. When I first saw him, I went "What in the hell" and then it clicked. lol Leo, at about 19 looks like he's 10. He still has the same mannerisms now and it's so bizzare to see he still has the same babyface. He's so adorable and just SO talented and "normal". It's amazing and extremely rare in HWood.
