Always above and beyond my expectations

Rewatching the videos in chronological order, and it only just occurred to me that this is the first life-or-death fight GG has had to face. Everything until now has been disputes with people who had no real reason to wish him harm, or in some cases were even trying to help him. Makes this fight all the more impactful, especially considering how long it takes GG to physically and mentally recover. Also, can't leave without saying how much I love Bog as a character. In a world full of protagonist-coded OCs, ACBeam came up with an unapologetically evil, cruel and OP monstrosity to run around and wreak havoc. In terms of presentation, this is probably my favorite appearance of his, but Bog is so fundamentally solid (not literally) that it's hard to miss with him.

Can we talk about how clean and badass the armor was reforging itself at 5:48

I like how gildedguy has one of the coolest weapons in this whole universe but most of the time will just resort to fisticuffs

I'm going to try and analyze this as best I can. I just want to pick this apart as much as possible. Like an itch that just won't go away! So here goes nothing ---------------- I want to say in advance that there are several missed details and things I get wrong here, so please read through the wonderful replies left here by other passionate fans. This was a group effort and I'm glad to have worked with you all to clear up this video as best we can! ---------------- 0:00 - An eerie version of Gildedguy's opening. As usual it shows a small depiction of the battle to come within the picture, only no one to flip through the pages. 0:10 - Gilded picks up his sword and cuts through the tall grass to give himself a good view of the night sky. It specifically opens up to a star that matches the star on his magic pen. This could imply that his pen and possibly his sword are otherworldly. Just a small connection from the magic pen and the vastness of space. It even explains why his eyes are green, but let's hold off on big conclusions like that. 0:51 - He's unsettled by his surroundings, at first. As the soft music cues in a black void fills his surroundings. As many already concluded, Gilded has cleared his mind so what lurks in the dark wouldn't worry him. Getting all those negative thoughts out of his head and focusing on what he loves. He probably gained a love for music from Story #2 if he wasn't already a fan. Do note that the aura he's given has the same hue as his magic pen which is what he uses to fix his armor. 1:22 - Gilded's sword begins to give a strange reflection of himself. Something that will become important later on. A Bog possessed version of himself. In a moment, his peace is disturbed. The musical notes vanishing as his "void" as some are calling it, spreads to those he cares about. (With an exception of the Slush Invader characters) His armor crawls around like it has a mind of its own as if specifically going after those he knows and doesn't want to see hurt. This pattern is consistent if you ignore the SL cameo and further ties him with that star. In my opinion the pieces of armor movimg about act similarly to Bog, indiscriminately chasing after anyone. Since this all came about after Gilded looked at his sword it's safe to say it may be able to show the future through cryptic visions. As if warning him of what could happen if Bog possessed him. 2:00 - Gilded turns into a puff of smoke, showing that he's returned to reality and returned to his senses. Just back at his campsite and going back to his meditation. He chose to ignore the sword's warning and look away, leaving himself vulnerable to Bog. 2:56 - Gilded's first attempt to defeat Bog gave a clean slash through the head. The lyrics and rhythm all work together to show how Bog easily rebounded from that. Regenerating and retaliating with his acid. 3:08 - He's aware Bog is a liquid, soenough heat could potentially defeat him. Gilded's second attempt to defeat Bog and getting more violent. 3:29 - Bog's face appears in the wet puddle, once again in Gilded's reflection, showing Bog's plan for him. Following directly after, Bog put out the fire so Gilded couldn't use the flaming sword against him. 3:32 Since it's now pitch black, Gilded uses his magic pen to work as a glow stick, although it makes him stick out in the dark he still needs to be able to see. Gilded is relying on this pen to be aware of his surroundings and by extension defeat Bog. 3:47 - After giving Gilded a physical thrashing, Bog takes on the face of Jade, confusing Gilded for only a moment. Enough time for another attack. 3:58 - Beaten and bruised, Gilded found himself in the dark once again. He looked down at his magic pen and it's matching star, realizing his pen wasn't the only way to shed more light on his surroundings. This star and this pen are so important to him, they cast light to help him even in this tough situation. 4:04 - Gilded uses his extending sword to cut down all the obscuring tall grass in the area, following up by going absolutely berserk on Bog. He could see Bog clearly after all, this was another opportunity to end this fight with Bog and Gilded knows he had to do it right. He set all morals aside and attempted to genuinely kill Bog. You can tell this is the case because Gilded's eyes aren't glowing through his helmet anymore, he had to kill Bog or he'd be killed was his current thought process. Gilded's third attempt to defeat Bog. 4:26 - Gilded is absolutely exhausted. Clouds begin rolling in and covering the night sky, once again plunging Gilded into darkness. Physically, Bog is near impossible to defeat and Gilded had to learn that the hard way. 4:35 - Him grasping at grass and not Bog's corpse only further showed how pointless it is to take him on in a physical battle. By this point Gilded lost all hope, practically letting Bog overtake him. 4:42 - Gilded's magic pen slides in, up till then his eyes were a pale white showing how he had given up. But now with the pen back he felt some of his lost hope return itself, both his eyes and his pen glowing a pale green 4:46 - He held his pen up to the night sky to try and find his star again, to no avail. It was as if he wanted to see it again to boost his spirits, to help him believe there was still a chance to win. But Bog pinned his arm down, removing his hope of even looking at that star again. Both his eyes and pen fading again. 4:54 - Before accepting his fate, Gilded looked through his sword. He saw his reflection again only it was different. It was him back when he was meditating (Thanks for pointing that out WhiteRose) The sword chose to warn Gilded about his future. Now it's choosing to show his past, his last ditch plan. And now instead of ignoring the blade again, he listened. The sword showed Gilded how his will power is much greater than Bog's through his meditation. Although his spirit alone can't defeat Bog, he doesn't have to win. He has to survive. 5:00 - Gilded removed his gloves and cut himself on his own blade, allowing Bog easy access into his blood stream and directly to his mind. 5:16 - It now takes on a much less literal sense and represents Gilded's internal struggle against Bog. When Bog posseses people thekr body acts to his wishes. Overriding the wishes of those Bog posseses. Absolutely thrashing their mind set until they succumb to him as he does to Gilded's spirit (concious, will power, whatever you wanna think it is.) 5:35 - I have no real way of explaining this besides it having ties to Gilded's memories and over all struggle against Bog. Even some of Bog's memories get thrown in from when he possessed someone in a tag team. 5:48 - Through every attack and every attempt to destroy Gilded's spirit, he won't quit. Because he's not going to fight Bog, he's going to out last him. He held out his hand showing he had no intention of fighting back, his meditation void returning to reflect his inner peace. 5:58 - Aggravated at not being able to break Gilded, Bog swatted his hand away. Gilded's armor only began placing itself around Bog, showing that he's plenty capable of fighting more but still choosing not to, only falling apart once Bog tore him off again. 6:06 - Bog was seemingly left alone in Gilded's subconsciousness, but Gilded was still there much to Bog's annoyance. Bog had the advantage on the physical level, but within Gilded's mind he stood no chance. 6:13 - Gilded once again chose not to fight and Bog decided to give up, sitting in front of Gilded until they both snapped back to reality like in the beginning. 6:21 - Gilded had survived the night, Bog left him alone due to not being able to possess him. Also according to the comments he dislikes the sun which was convenient for Gilded. 7:55 - Gilded is seen returning home, making a new pair of gloves. However due to his self inflicted wounds he couldn't put then on, so he opted for mittens until he healed. Another display of his will power, he wasn't going to let a wound get in the way of what he loved. Art. Music notes once again appeared as he began drawing, as meditation is meant to relax the mind, Gilded uses art to get the same effect. ---------------- This was just my perspective on this beautifully animated battle. If I'm wrong then please go ahead and chew me out comment section, I can take it!

It's pretty badass if you think about it. Everyone Gildedguy's fought until now had some sort of super power. Jade has an affinity to fire, bog can regenerate and is literal fucking slime, Oxob has lightning abilities and shit, while Gildedguy just has a sword and an infinite supply of determination, yet somehow he still beats all of them.

I love how Gildedguy didn't hold back at all in this fight, it seems that he knows that a fight against Bog is almost always life or death. Victory or defeat. Notice how this is the only animation where Gildedguy directly attacks the opponent in their vital parts as in the head, chest etc.

I realized just now that Gilded's willpower is INSANE In one of Bog's fights, he attacks his ally and possesses her INSTANTLY When he entered Gilded's mind, Gilded lasted for hours until Bog eventually gave up and was even TAUNTING him by the end of it

i recently noticed that at 5:49, a black circle expands to cover the entire background, like when gildedguy is meditating before the fight. extremely cool detail, a cherry on top for an already beautiful and badass scene.

Damn, normally I'm a strong guy, but this... This almost brought a tear to my eye. This is the most beautiful animation I've ever seen.

I just realized at 5:49 and during the whole armor rebuilding scene there is an expanding black circle in the background, just like when Gildedguy was meditating earlier- that's a really cool detail!

Almost a year later, and just now I realized why this animation is so beautiful. In every other fight where Bog loses, he is physically overpowered in some way. This fight shows Bog as he really is - not so much a character as a force of nature. It truly illustrates that Gilded's not the greatest fighter. Not the most powerful character. It adds so much more depth to him and highlights his personality that much more, and I love every bit of it.

In a physical match, Bog would beat Gildedguy 9 times out of 10, but in a contest of wills, Gildedguy has no equal. Notice how in the physical world Bog clings to Gildedguy like a living disease that corrupts him from the outside, but when Bog enters Gildedguy's mind, suddenly the hunter becomes the hunted, and it's Gildedguy's stalwart nobility that clings to Bog like a virus and "corrupts" the corrupter.

the raw endurance this man has mentally and physically is insane

I love this added detail: Gilded Guy doesn’t admire the animation or show it off to us in the intro like usual. because this messed him up pretty badly, and he’d rather not talk about it

It's quite sad when you realize, this was the first time GG ever had to fight for his life. Just by the part at 4:00 you can tell, he was not fighting anymore, he was trying to kill Bog. Needless to say, this event would remain with him for a time as seen by the brief moments of PTSD when attempting to put his gauntlets back on.

Gildedguy without eyes and with broken armor is soo badass

I swear, the moment when Bog rips apart his consciousness and it forms back together through sheer willpower just to walk back into him is so fucking unapologetically badass I can't get over it

I didn't realize until recently that near the beginning when he looks at his sword he sees himself from later in the video, and later in the video when he looks at his sword he sees himself from earlier.

I never noticed before how GG gets more violent as he gets more of bog clinging to him. So many little details to watch on these animations. So much talent in this man.

The moment where his armour reforms after being destroyed so many times is so powerful to me...its like his determination alone was able to keep him from dying...this animation always inspires me to keep going forward no matter the difficulty...Gildedguy is one of the best animators out there

6 years ago? wow. looking back, Story #4 was probably my biggest inspiration in art over the years.

Story 0 has given me perspective. I see now that Bog represented the world and its expectations. That's why Michael chose to duel such a tough opponent. It was never just Gildedguy vs Bog. It was always Michael vs reality. And Michael won.

5:49 most badass scenes in history

After seeing what Bog did to other stick people like Yupia, Hue, Blue to name a few, GG got lucky or is powerful as hell

After years of occasionally coming back to this, it's now dawned on me why the fight ends with a peaceful resolution. When an artist has to face droughts of motivation, the answer may seem like you have to fight more, go faster, and work harder. Yet the more you do this, you reach a breaking point... total burnout. The innate desire to be lazy is something you simply have to live with. Hence the visual metaphors when inside Gilded Guy that imply him and Bog really fit together in a way.

It's amazing how much symbolism you fit into these. When he can't find the star in the sky as Bog gains the advantage, the void Gilded creates, the real-life images we see as Bog attempts to take control (destruction of creativity?), and the hollow armor defeating Bog in the end. I'm probably missing many more subtle symbols. You have forever redefined both of these characters, showing a more brutal and powerful side of Gilded as he becomes desperate, and introducing a major psychological element to Bog, while capturing his raw insanity as he freakishly smiles the entire fight. Your style is so unique and the amount of details you fit in every single animation is simply astounding, practically guaranteeing we'll come back and watch it again just to catch them. I have been watching your animations for a while, but regretfully never actually commented. This was well worth the wait and I am overwhelmingly excited for what you do next. :>

5:46 i like to think gilded fell unconscious long before that point (seen as his eyes are gone for most of bog's relentles beating) and at this scene, what we see isnt actually gilded, but the pure incarnation of his unbreakable will, absolutely refusing to give in, it makes the scene so much more epic

The gold that gildedguy wears is vulnerable to explosions as seen in against jade and in rhg, it is enhanced by being lighter when in contact with lightning as seen in vs oxob. and in this story, his armor is simply immune to gobs acid as seen clearly at 5:43, Gg's ferrokinesis is a power inside him, so when bog enters Gg's mind, he cannot destroy the armor that keeps him alive because Gg can rebuild anything made from the fabric of gold, that gold of which is his power and he believes is what makes him who he is. bog was able to penetrate Gg's physical form and enter his mind in attempt to finish him, but as explained through the story, Gg is able to disconnect from worldly matters, the reliability of physical matters and even detach his mind from his the form his physical self. this allows Gg to use his mind to believe that bog (and no one) can stop him from who he is. Gg has so many powers, you and I cant imagine how he will use his mind set in his next battle!!!

I don't even have words to describe how beautifully crafted this animation was holy hell,, That wait was definitely worth it.

Its interesting that the fight ended not with Bog losing. But just Bog not breaking Gildedguy's mind. Like Bog only wanted to break Gildedguy. How he wanted him to cut himself and let him in inside his mind. But when he lost the battle inside it, he didn't just kill Gildedguy. He was surprisingly a good sport about it.

Gamers: you can beat slimes in one slash Gildedguy: you know nothing

We've actually seen the Star in the sky before. After rewatching the "Knight of Desire" speed paint, there is actually a Star shaped constellation in the night sky (one of its points being a massive glowing gem on a pedestal)! In the painting, you can see a sleeping Stick Michael who is likely dreaming everything going on around him - including the star! In this fight, you can see a flashback of Stick Michael waking up with white eyes and hazel pupils, then - after a quick flash of a sketch that foretells the next part - you see him removing a paint mask from his face (still in his bed) but this time with green eyes and hazel pupils. This is important because we know from the speed paint of "Happy Workers" that before Stick Michael became GildedGuy he was a painter with white eyes and hazel pupils. So something must have happened when he woke up to make his eyes change. But still... how did he get his iconic armor and cape? 🤔 Edit: Forgot to mention that the giant gem is shaped the same as his pen!

I just love how physically, Gildedguy is almost an ant to Bog. but either Bog makes the wrong move by cutting GG's hands, or, in another form of an incredibly smart move, cuts them himself, knowing that if he takes Bog to the mind, Bog is nothing. and of course, he was right

It's easy to think Gildedguy is just some dude in shiny armor, but the truth is, Gildedguy is as knightly and chivalrous as they come. He may not be a "knight", but he sure acts like one at times; the same ones you used to hear about growing up, the ones who'd slay dragons, rescue princesses, and free the downtrodden while upholding their own personal code of honor. GIldedguy truly is the people's champion

4:04 may be one of the greatest moments I've seen in animation, I've watched this animation dozens of times and it just keeps on impressing me.

That's it Gildedguy, I already sell my soul to Satan to be at ur animating level. 5:00 he's being in the opposite side of the sword of 1:30 is totally genius idea. The improvement of animating by animate alot more frames than before, 2nd motion & easing, combine with many styles & color themes, ideas make this stand on the top of any stick animations. This gave me massive inspiration for the next RHG

I just realized that the reason his armor breaks so easily is cause it's gold and you actually cared to be accurate about the material and for that I commend you for for actually being accurate plus the battle damage is a nice touch you're a damn fine animator too

I'm late with mentioning this, but something I noticed, is that when bog starts his mental assault, GG's eyes disappear out of the armor. I like to think of this as, gg's mind is no longer in the armor, and it's just his will that's there. GG views his armor not as indestructible, but constantly repairing, and so long as it can be repaired, his mind will never be beaten.

Many think that the fight is epic, but as a novice animator I know how difficult it is to make animations of such quality and that's why I think this is an irreplaceable masterpiece. Since there are many people who do not take into account the hard work we do to animate (it happens to me that I share a good quality animation and they say "good"). it can take months or years to make an animation like this and for that you have my respects GildedGuy.

The best thing is that in chemistry Gold doesn't react with acids. So that's why glideguy even survived. Nice man. Awsome job.

The fact a demonic nightmare-filled monster slowly fustrated by gildedguy

How much chance is there that Bog actually left in peace, letting Gilded be, and not *_PURELY_* from the sun rising? Like, that would be so interesting. Because Bog seemed to understand at the end of the fight, when he sat down next to Gilded, and being "snuffed out" maybe signifying his leaving of the body.

I remember riding the bus going to work at a truly chitty job when this first came out. I sent it to EVERYONE i could think of because it is that great of a video/concept/editing EVERYTHING! This vid really helped me get through a rough patch....the part where GG goes into his inner sanctum to find answers really spoke to me. You have to remain focused during your darkest hour! Friggin awesome vid even 3 years later!

The bog is a physical manifestation of the the troubling things one may find in their work as an animator online. The green light was hope, his sword was used to tell the future, and the bog was the form of hate and fear of future obscurity that animators fear when creating work. Gilded guy struggled to fight against it, but in reality, one can only survive it by calming their mind and doing what they love

So its been about 6 years since I watched this (was there at release). Multiple times over the years on and off as I am in absolute awe and never noticed until someone pointed out the frame when you slow it down at 5:38. Jesus dude thats metal as all hell, I know what fight it references aswell. Thats one hell of a detail which I absolutely commend you for (not sure if you read this though).

People keep saying that Gildedguy just survived but didn't win the battle because he didn't kill bog. I think that it is a win because while he is extremely beaten Bog seemed to be left in a much weaker state. To me it didn't seem that he was bored but more like he never would have won. It's like the question "What happens when an unstoppable force meets and immovable object?" In this case Bog is the unstoppable force going against Gildeguy whose strength and will keep him from being consumed.

Now I realise, before the fight starts, bog tryies to keep gildedguys’s sword away controling his mind, then when he throws away the sword, he strikes.

Everyone is talking about how hard this must have been to animate 5:59 but this was probably very hard too. 4:06 Look at all the grass everywhere, and the sword is just crazy. Very great work!
