I shave with a old razor, but new to me: the Gillette English Flat Bottom Tech. Keeping with the British theme, my shaving cream today is the Taylor of Old Bond Street (TOBS) "Eton College".
** Kit **
Gillette English Flat Bottom Tech
Gillette Silver Blue blade
Taylor of Old Bond Street (TOBS) "Eton College" shaving cream
RazoRock Amici mixed badger/boar brush
Barrister and Mann Reserve Cool aftershave
** Intro / Outro **
Even those with a stiff upper lip find they cannot stop themselves from getting a silly grin on their face when they hear the opening track "Spygame" and then again when they hear the boogie beat of "Booty Swing" at the end. Thanks to Parov Stelar for both!

love how those old fat handle techs i find them mild but a bit more efficient than some of the super speed flair tips

Me too, they are also more comfortable -- with that said, the black tip super speed is also REALLY good!

It will be very nice to see a wide variety of vintage razors in your upcoming videos. Hopefully one of them will become a long time favorite.

+borbetomagus Well, we are off to a good start! This Tech did a great job, alhough I could have done an even better job in that last touch up pass. I always feel the time pressure in these videos, which does not help matters. I am really looking forward to the two New heads I have, as well as the Old type (which I think is the one others have recommended that I shim before shaving with it.

Really like the TOBS Elton College. Can’t believe how much feedback you were getting after 3 passes. Is your beard really coarse and thick?
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 5 лет назад
Not that coarse or thick, but razor models do have their own sound. In some cases, the razor is just "loud", with a lot of feedback or buzz, and it's not really the amount of stubble causing the noise.

Nice British shave Michael 😌👏 I shaved my head with a Tech tonight, (the aluminium handled one), you're right, they're quite mild but very nice razors to use. A tub of TOBS cream usually goes for about £10 here in the UK, which is definitely less than some of the other big name classic British soaps. Always lather really well, and the only downside I've ever heard is that some people are irritated by the TOBS sandalwood (I know I am 😩). I'm looking forwards to seeing the other vintage razors you'll be using.

Louis Leoncini to be honest it's not my usual head shaver, but it was so good tonight, I will be using it more often 😌

+Dave C £10 is $12 or so now, so that is in fact pretty good value. Sandalwood is a risk no matter the brand, but unless sandalwood is your absolute favorite, move on to one of the dozens of other really amazing scents! I am not sure why I thought the Tech would be aggressive, but one look at the fully assembled razor and you can see this will be on the mild side. Looks can be deceiving, though...

Nice shave. I love these old razors, in fact I shaved with a 38ish tech myself this morning also well loved over these 75+ years. I've also been working through a score of TOBS samples. I like them all so far except the Avocado. I'm not a big fan of that one. Love your videos, they are always informative, keep them coming.
@mfreedberg

+Skeet Sirmons the avocado TOBS contains avocado oil or does it also smell of avocado? Thank you for the kind comment, I really appreciate that, and not to worry, plenty more videos in future!

Nice shave! Of course they will never have the tradition with having this barber shop in a London city location like TOBS, but regarding value and performance I could see Sterling Soap Company as the new TOBS. I only have tried two of their soaps so far, but they last forever, perfrom superb and my god, it feels like a robbery to buy them. Very inexpensive and definitely in my top 3 (even if the soaps would cost twice as much).

This video(a portion of the commentary) definitely falls into the "YMMV" situation. I have the Rapira DE safety razor you mentioned and it works absolutely beautifully for me. Smooth and irritation with every shave so far and I've used it for approximately a year.

+WolfRanger2008 I am going to give it another go once it returns to me, and I would be glad to discover that it offers a shave similar to the Tech. Be on the lookout for that video in future.

Nice video Michael, thanks for uploading. Normally don't like flat bottoms (sorry) but in this case I'm in favour. Thanks for the information, I was always under the impression that TOOBS is just okay, didn't know it's very good.

+Nayem Khan TOBS has a solid reputation for a reason, as the creams perform well and the scents are generally very well-done. I had no issues building a good lather, but there are certainly better options out there in my opinion. That does not detract, however, from the generally good performance of the TOBS creams.

Interesting thing happened. I actually got a skin reaction in form of redness and some light itching after using the TOBS "Eton College" for the last three shaves. First time that happened to me. The skin is starting to look better now after a couple of days of shaving rest so the choice for todays shave was Mitchells Wool Soap. Really like how that soap works with my skin and no problem at all after the shave. Will try Eton College later on just to confirm if it really was the soap that was the cause for the redness and the slight irritation.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 5 лет назад
Michael Ham has a good recommendation for this: try using the soap on the inside of your elbow to see if you get any irritation or reaction. That way you are not using your face to find out if the soap does not agree with you :-) Nice scent, though, I have to agree!

Great video as always Michael, great to see that You will be using vintage razors, I am wondering how they perform versus modern ones. By the way I recived and used already Maggard slant it turned out to be great shave no nicks at all . Thank You as always for Your great recommendation.

+Christopher Ach Vintage razors are well love for good reason, well, at least some are! The vintage Gillettes remain excellent razors, and there is still such a wide variety of these razors available for sale that nobody should find it impossible to try one out. Very glad to hear you are enjoying the Maggard slant, it is an excellent option for the price. Which handle did you choose to go with it?

Michael Freedberg Thank You so much Michael for Your kind advice .I have bought the same handle that You like and , that You use in Your video with slant. if I am not mistaken it is called MR5 bamboo with indentations for the fingers. it is excellent. Your help and advice is invaluable and always greatly appreciated. Thank You so much again and please have a great week ahead. Chris

Nice Shave Michael . I've got some TOBS Eton College Cream . Had to think what TOBS is in my rotation , but it is St James Cream . Impressive Creams , the Soaps when I bought them are duds , but I heard some ingredient was removed due to politics , but I heard they've reformulated and the latest is much better , but I have no idea personally . Trying to work through my open cream , croaps , and soaps , before getting into the stash . May buy a few more , never know . I need to try Barrister and Mann products , and about a million others , but ... . Appreciate the videos , humor , tips , and constructive (I don't know if thats the right word , maybe instructive is better) reviews . Thanks , and as the Polo Club says Cheerio

+Michael Ray So hard to say no to new soaps, even though we all have great stuff languishing in our piles of products. Once upon a time I used to start a soap, use only that soap until it was gone, and *then* start a new one. Those days are long gone.

Michael is the Gillette English Fat Tech Thea same design as the regular American version?
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 4 года назад
wow, great question -- and I would like to think so, but I am no expert on vintage Gillette razors. There must be an easy way to find out!
@ivermec-tin666
@ivermec-tin666 3 года назад
The general consensus is that the British Tech is slightly more efficient than the USA made Tech. They look the same, but the British Gillette razors were made on equipment that was developed in Britain. Most regard the British made Gillette razors to be of a higher level of finish and quality of construction than those made in the USA. The flat bottom Tech is rather a different beast than the more common variants. Pre-war techs (with diamond shaped holes in the base plate) are generally more efficient than post war techs.

What didnt you like about the Rapira Tech clone? I have one and its pretty much my favorite out of all the razors i own, its the only one that can easily get the E-W hairs on my neck BBS. Its super aggressive but just floats easily.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
The first time I used it, the blade did not seem to be held very tightly in the head and it felt harsh and out of control. I could not find a comfortable angle at all, and I just had this sense I was tearing at the hair and causing myself some serious razor burn. I have not used it since, BUT I will clearly have to give it another go! No fear.

You're right, yesterday's relatively "small-time" artisan soap maker may well be t/rrow's big brand name, and indeed how many will be the established brands from today's smallish business concern. On difference between the States & the UK, in Britain we have what's called the Royal Warrant. The Dr Harris soaps, shaving creams, etc., for instance, have been granted by the Queen & Prince of Wales such a Warrant over their supply of Dr Harris's goods to those two royal households (at least officially). Dr. Harris was once (late 18th c.) a small-time apothecary, and the granting of a Royal Warrant can obviously change one's business status. In the States though, until Presidents (Trump might consider!) start granting to suppliers of the Presidential Household Presidential Warrants, there is no hope for US artisans to make it big :) (..I sincerely hope people don't get too protective about all this, it was all tongue-in-cheek) Joking apart, one shouldn't need any Warrants Royal/Presidential...a good product is a good product...and boy there's some very good artisan soap making in the States.
@mfreedberg
@mfreedberg 7 лет назад
+K Theodor Ah, the Royal Warrant! No such boon may be grants by our President, as he OR SHE is expressly prohibited from endorsing specific products. I think some of the US artisans are selling at very good volumes, but none of them are able to claim the longevity of the established UK brands. YET. Frankly, the quality of the US artisan soap market is almost absurdly high, and many others are right there with them. We live in a Golden Age of soaps :-)
