This log arch was designed for skidding large logs out of the woods to the sawmill. Occasionally a hand truck is used for skidding much bigger logs than this one. This log is a Black Cherry log approximately 20 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length. This video demonstrates the operation and use of this device.
Dimensions
Looking at the back of the arch where the wheels are mounted. The height of the inside of the pipe to the ground (when hitched up) is 39 1/2" by a width of 32 1/2" (inside the pipes). The arch is made from forged steal gas well pipes but any type of strong steel will work. The wheels are mounted onto the arch with a piece of 3" channel with small pieces of steel for brackets to mount automotive wheel bearings to. At the top of the arch there are two pieces on angle 28" long with 3/4" holes drilled so the hook can be moved, and also so lager longs can be hauled without having an extremely long log arch. At the front of the log arch (where the hitch is mounted), there is a piece of angle 18" long for the three support pipes to mount to. Each of the outside bottom pipes is 61" long and is welded to the inside of the angle for better support and strength. The pipe in the middle was just cut to fit. However, since it did become hard to pull up the bigger logs with the pulley system seen in this video, we built a new bracket so the belt rides over a pulley, then through another pulley with a bracket to hook the log tongs onto, then back up to the top and mounts to the frame to allow a 2:1 mechanical advantage (Similar to how a block and tackle works).

if you go the proper way with the winch, they unlock very easily.

Hmmm, just get a crane for your Massey, hook it up and put tongs on the end. If you do it right the head end of the log will nescle in the arch and the whole log is off the ground eliminating sand etc. Those 3 point cranes are great for tractor use.

I was just trying to imagine another set of wheels under that log on the back.

Why do you drag the log in the dirt instead of using the trailer?

I would bet if you hooked that winch up to the back of the log after you have the chain on that you could lift the whole log off the ground
@LinuxPenguine
@LinuxPenguine 9 лет назад
Andrew82688 We do that sometimes especially when hauling over wet ground, highways, and lawns.

Great design, but why did you take it off the winch and put it on the chain?

The log tongs will not stay in the log during transport well.

LinuxPenguine great piece of equipment I under stand lowering the log on the chain but why put the log tongs up seem like a extra step just to go back and put them back on
@LinuxPenguine
@LinuxPenguine 10 лет назад
The reason we take it off the wench is to hold the log closer to the hitch with the chain and put more weight on the hitch whereas the wench holds the log behind the rear tires.

iwantosavemoney The tongs do not hold the log well during transport and tend to fall off over bumps.

I’m trying to figure out why he is so fussy with the winch. Does he think it will get damaged if it swings free or maybe he was just doing that for the video....

No, it just has a bad muffler

I have posted some of the dimensions in the description of the log arch and I think that it would be enough. If not, please comment again and I will post more. I am also hoping to make a full drawing with dimensions within the next week or so. When I do, I will post the link in the description in pdf format.

i don't think it has a bad muffler, because it sounds like the go-karts at boomers and they have good mufflers

Why not just pick up the trailer to get it into the right position? It would be faster than your driving skills!
