Usually not one to bang on too much the serpentine setup looks awesome obviously, but the price is off the charts I would use that money to put towards a come racing intake manifold 😅. So yeah $ 1800 is just abit too expensive for my liking boys
We hear you Shane. There's no denying the full RS1 kit is a bit spendy for most, but remember this is a flagship item. If you were to compare a gilmer set with the basic Reidspeed waterpump and alternator kit, you can still have 6-rib function and Australian made reliability for only a little bit more than the janky whistle belt 👌
@@TorqHub ok so there is other options that's good to know it's a killer piece and people with show cars can just bolt straight on. I have the Gilmer setup and have heard alot of stories about them, I Flung a belt once and lost it on the freeway on the way to a car meet the car overheated and had to get a tow 😂 so I carry a spare belt but yeah will be changing it in the near future cheers mate as usual love the content waiting for the next vh vid should be a big one😉👍
Definitely multiple options on the website mate. We probably should have mentioned that in more depth in the video, but as you could imagine we were a bit turnt up by what we had in front of us 😅
Got mine today..the owner of reidspeed is a legend. Called me and kept me informed of production delays and when i finally got it the actual kit is gorgeous sooooo well made. If you dont have one get one just awesome bit of gear and well worth the wait. Mine is going into a vs series 3 ss ute with a 383 stroker NA build
your new system looks amazing for sure. a properly installed and adjusted Gilmer drive system actually won't make much if that belt whine noise, or will it wear out any bearings. mine has been on a street rod since 2012 and logged well over 30k miles without an issue
Completely true. Ive gone through 3 gilmer kits, welded my own pulleys for a 2” belt on my torana & its just pretty homo tbh. The ONLY way if you want to run a gilmer, is keep it slack until you’ve fully heated up the engine to running temp then adjust again so there is still a touch of slack in the belt so it wont rip your bearings apart. Solution: buy a supercharger. In the long run you probably save the headaches and get the power instead of all bark & no bite
Lovely kit boys Reid speed shop are killing it. Only thing is those accessories need to come back off and painted again 😂 Can’t leave them there with chipped paint bolted onto that work of art. The joy Kurt had while the “name that shall not be spoken kit” was shoved in the bin was awesome😂
Missed this comment sorry Scotty! Thanks for dropping in as always and you're right, kit will need to come off and get some of that pressure pack black sorted out, some black powder coat here n there will do wonders. Cheers brother
I fitted a RS1 too my 5L and it is the best part I put on the motor, Dan from Reidspeed was allsome to deal with, even anodised my kit blue to match my ute
awesome show fellas, come across you blokes about 2 weeks ago! I have a VS Calais series 2 , 5 litre . I've had it for 5 years and early new year i am doing a full rebuild and make over and you guys have inspired me to turbo it also! cheers fellas and good luck with your brand and i think you both are building something special with Torq hub media. I'll have to buys some merch too! good luck fellas.🍻
Hey Ben! Thanks for dropping in, mate! We're glad you found us! A series 2 VS Calais is very, very high on the list of desirables for us. They're a great car, and being a rare 5.0 that you are going to turbo! That will be epic.
@@TorqHub cheers mate for the reply, I'm floating the old girl up to my mates shed tomorrow to start slowly on the rebuild and then early next year put some big money into it. I've been waiting to do it up for years, so now finally getting to do it, so I'm stoked. its full leather and all original V8 plated and a genially awesome car when its finished! love to email you guys some progress pics and pick you guys brains on what i should do because I'm not very mechanically aliterate lol so that's why i love your channel ! you blokes are legends!
Gilmers do have their place, especially when your fighting belt slip on supercharger applications. Only downside which they didn't touch on is Gilmer drives apart from pulling extra tension on bearings is they transfer harmonics and vibrations from the crank to external units. The sound of "chattering teeth" inside a tight tolerance rotor pack isn't the best. we went back to a serpentine belt and it went away. Works fine on roots blower but not on a TVS.
If you run the gilmerdrives these days you still need to run the white Annette sunny's, limp biscuit cd and 6x9s in hacked into your vn parcel shelf. Disclaimer I did run gilmer drives on my vs 3 maloo back around 2003 with ac still. That RS1 is the best thing you can do to a 5.0l besides a turbo. My old maloo also came with the v6 style radiator being a series 3 which ment the v6 thermo bolted on and there was a plug there. If the vs and vh radiators are interchangeable maybe could also run a oem thermo instead of the hub fan.
Gday boys Byron here new subscriber Mates with Blake and Jason Bro thats a gangsta up upgrade for the drive belts ill be checking out rieds for our 308 Take it easy boys 👍
Cheers for stopping in Byron! Much appreciated. Came across your channel following Torque n Power's Pinjarra MAX fest podcast. Hopefully we might be able to make it there next year 🤙🏻
I bet if you read the instructions you'd have seen that you had to put the pulley on the power steer pump after install. Also, on those gilmer belt drive kit, lets not forget that one year at Motorvation when our mutual friend pulled the water pump off the block off his car on the skid pad
Hi guys just wanted to know what alternator bracket was used on the vr BT1 as on riedspeed the kit shows a older style bracket want to use same kit as I have a electric water pump great content informative and helpful 👍
Thanks mate, still one of the sexiest engine bays to exist that one! Can't wait to see the refreshed 383 back in action Hopefully soon with the addition of a harrop pump on top 🙌
Had a gilmore 😅 myself lasted a week before stock belt system went back on. Lucky my mistake only cost $30...one day i'll get the reid kit. With the gilmah setup its the human version of those fake bodybuilders that pump themselves full of oil to look tuff!
Will say if the old gilmer is adjusted correctly( not so tight that it makes that S/C noise) you won’t have any problem with water pumps and alternators! Serpentine is the best, the VT serpentine was a good upgrade, but hard to get your hands on. Reid speed are great stuff!
I’ve been waiting for this, but was hoping for a little more detail on the power steering pump pulley fitment - the press off the old was fine, just wanting to know how far onto the shaft you pressed the new drive flange. I have one of these kits, I’m just lacking motivation to fit it to my VS series 111 ute. Daniel at Reidspeed was great to deal with, can’t recommend home enough.
Wind the power steering spigot on with fitment tool until the front is flush with the end of the shaft in the pump 👌 The installation instructions are very detailed and well put together, and other than our powersteering shaft maybe being on the 'thicker' side and making us work for it, installation is a breeze!
There's a couple of reasons for sticking with the stock clutch fan, and we'll probably have a detailed discussion about it on the next podcast. But the main reason is, we want this to be a total sleeper. With the bonnet up we want it to simply look like a clean, unassuming, stock 304 conversion, and that means a clutch fan and stock shroud 😉👌
There's provision for aircon using the standard VN-VS A/C bracket. If you're interested, give Daniel at reidspeed a call and tell him we sent ya. He's already looked after a few viewers already ! Cheers mate.
I'm only here because you're there, Might look them up and see if any ford shit available. Going the extra expense once can save drama's from cheap shit 3 times. Cheers lads.
Question on my Vs 5ltr ute I'm going electric water pump and electric power steering and leaving aircon pump off. So only belt I have is crank to alternator. Has anyone gone that way and if so appreciated anyone feedback
We run exactly that on our Turbo VR BT1 project Christian! And Reidspeed do a killer 6pk pulley setup to suit that exact requirement. They do low and high mount alternator options. Check the link below. Tell him we sent ya mate reidspeed.com.au/shop/engine-accessories/holden-v8-alternator-only-electric-water-pump-serpentine-belt-system
This particular kit probably won't be compatible mate, but I have seen reidspeed kits to suit whipple blowers. If you contact Reidspeed they may be able to machine something to suit your application.
Nicely made part and I think worth the money for all the work into it. But tbh, not a fan of the look of it on the engine. It has an American 'hot rod pulley kit' vibe to it, which might be something you guys like, but I don't think it suits a clean streeter. You take a nice compact little V8 that could have closely mounted accessories hugging the engine.... and you've made it look like a little engine with big block size accessories hanging off it. Looking at the whole thing, it looks like you've got A/C and an air compressor in there, there is that much going on! lol! I guess I'm a fan of trying to make something look factory-ish and this setup just sits way too far off the engine and is too wide imo.
That saddest part about all of it is, with the clutch fan and shroud in place... you can barely see any of it whatsoever! But, it's less about the fashion of the item (although we do think it looks freakin Hollywood - in our opinion) and more about the function. A no slip, low drag, quiet and efficient way to run the accessory drive that eliminates alignment issues that throw your belt, often at the worst possible time.
@@TorqHub True, I did comment before you started bolting everything else back on, lol. But that style of big alloy bracket standing off from the engine gives me 1998 Boyd Coddington tri-spoke billet wheel vibes 😅 Obviously it's a million miles more functional though than the ultimate bad engineering combo of v-belt and gilmer drive!
@@ArchimedeanEye I have one on mine SS. Still have aircon etc. People absolutely love it when the see in my engine bay at shows etc. It's been on my motor for 8 years with no issues at all. You don't see all of it that is for sure. **Edit - I have a Harrop Single plane, and Au thermo fans on mine so you see a fair bit more - but still not all of it.
@@FRENZY355 Nice, yeah can tell its super well made. I just prefer everything tucked in if possible, so its just the little V8 itself that is most prominent.
@archimedeanEye. The accessories in this kit are in the stock hq-wb positions. We see what you're saying, though. The main plate that ties everything together makes it look that way. It is also what adds the necessary rigidity to enable this setup to be as solid as it is. We do love the look, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? haha
Please stop misleading the industry into thinking something is wrong with a product that is commonly used in industrial applications! Just because you got free parts ($1800) worth that makes no difference to the performance or reliability of your car. And ffs a gilder noise is not there to replicate a blower! It's replicates straight cut gears! Clearly theys no supercharger when there's no hole in the bonnet. But thank you for showing everyone that literally anyone can upload videos!
Awwwwwww yeaaaaahhh nice one mate, I see what your doing here... having a blower whine by the sounds! Nice way to get a shout out on the next podcast. Stay classy!
@matthewbrooks5013 If you're in the industry and are able to be 'mislead' by a couple weekend warriors then I would be very concerned for your job security. However, you can't argue with a product with runs on the board. This, and the much more modest RS5 kit WILL increase both performance AND reliability by having less drag on the rotating assembly, less pressure on accessory bearings, and better accessory drive alignment. These are facts. We also invite you to check out the 2 blown cars we have on the channel with nothing protruding from the bonnet 😘
We're sticking with the tried and tested standard cooling system, in our opinion, Nothing performs better in the cooling department on these motors. They leave a little to be desired in the aesthetics department, but that suits this build perfectly.
Depending on what you system needs are you can get into a reidspeed RS5 6-rib to replace a gilmer setup from $575, this full RS1 kit is their flagship accessory drive system, and runs at about $1800.
