Yes, Emily in all her craziness and toxicity was right in her conviction about marrying Richard. As soon as everyone else started walking from the table to chat with their boyfriends, Lorelei called… Chris. Then when Lorelei leaves Max, she explains to Rory that she “didn’t want to try on her wedding dress every night”. Emily was the vehicle that gave her that epiphany.
When people discuss Jess and Lorelai they often act as if they were equal, but they are not. He's a child and she is an adult, but she does not act that way when he comes to their house for the first time. She can be really bratty and snarky too, but it's bad when other people are? Projecting much? She was not a saintly child, so I wished she could maybe empathize, but no. I also dislike that she makes an opinion of him without knowing him and then sticks to it for forever. I wish the script(and characters) would care more about the fact that with his history/childhood it is no wonder he is who he is. And it does seem like an armor to just lean into that role. Only Luke and Rory try to give him a chance. To act as if a child deemed rotten is doomed to be bad forever is, well, not good. I'm glad where he ended at least. (Don't get me started on his mother, I hated when they brought her in and acted as if his trauma was nothing). Tho sometimes I was not so sure his characterazition was that consistent (but other characters are no exception, so it' s normal I guess)
🤔you made me realize something... Lorelai doesn't run from happiness. She runs from control (BEING controlled, specifically). Which is weird when you think about how she liked Dean for Rory...although, they totally morphed Dean's character into something unrecognizable as the seasons went on, so that's the writers' fault!😄 And you know what? I'm gonna defend Jess' attitude. What teenager isn't a snarky punk sometimes? Plus, Jess didn't exactly have any male role models; then he gets uprooted and shipped off to his uncle (who, by their introduction... doesn't look like they've ever MET) in his senior year (or junior, but whatever) of high school, which means he's leaving his only semblance of stability (i mean, i love Liz, but...😬😕), so, yea - he's a little peeved. And, it's Stars Hollow, which looks like a Norman Rockwell painting come to life...little overwhelming. I probably would've been a little snarky too! (I wouldn't have stolen the baseballs...but that's just because theft is more trouble than it's worth.) ...i have...gone off on a Lorelai-esque tangent, and i haven't even had coffee yet!😂😂 Oh yea - the Bracebridge Dinner is probably my second favorite episode, right after There's the Rub😊😊😊
@@kelseyparker9497 mine too. 🤔They needed each other...but i don't know that they were right for each other. He needed her when he first moved to Stars Hollow; she needed him to kick her in the butt after she got too into her privilege at Yale. (We're not gonna talk about the revival because that doesn't exist; it's just a bad fever dream🙄)
I screamed into the night when you said the thing about children are people too! That is something I say all the time and if I had one crusade in this life it would be that! It is at the root of so many toxic family environments too
For the longest time, this was my comfort season, so it was interesting to look at in a critical light recently, I was able to find some new appreciation for elements such as Rory and Jess, plus giving Emily and Richard more likeable moments.
When Tristian was like I would kiss you goodbye but your boyfriends watching was so sad 😭😭😭 The Bracebridge Dinner episode is one of my favorites it so cute when Jess jumps onto the carriage with Rory and they talk like its sooooo cute I LOVE them together
Honestly, I didn't like Max. I like Scott Cohen, who played him, but not the character. He really pushed hard for the relationship, even after she tried to break up with him. Then he proposed because he's jealous of Luke, then proposes for real, even though it's way too soon. (Although I like the scene, later, when they run into each other at a drugstore, she tells him Rory's dating Jess, and he says "You hate him...you want to have him killed" 😂). Poor Brad! ☺️
Even as I watched the show as a kid, that episode at the drag club gave me childhood trauma 😬 it is so obvious in that moment that Lorelei didn’t love Max and was only staying in the engagement because she felt pressure to fulfill social expectations. Then when Rory confronts her, Lorelei quotes Emily “I didn’t want to try on my wedding dress every night” 😣😬
When I was a teenager I loved Jess. As a younger adult I hated him and now I’m back to loving him again. No, he wasn’t a good boyfriend at the time but he had such a difficult time growing up. He was never going to be perfect but the person he grows into is the best of all of them.
Ooooh im excited for your season 3 recap!! Specifically episode 13 where Sherry gives birth 😭😭😭 seeing the flashbacks and getting to see how hurt Emily was is so gut wrenching but it gives you so much insight on the characters 🥲
Timestamps with opinions of mine! 1:35 hehe i lov food too! 1:58 Me too!! Luke have to watch her going through all her love interests and hear abt it when he loves her! I can't imagine the pain 2:07 i think she doesnt tell Emily mostly bc she was worried she's gonna ruin this for her 2:22 your so right. This fight was so dumb and really childish of Dean but i trying to put myself in his shoes. You want to spend time with your love but she doesnt have any time and when you actually have an ocassion to spend some time with her, she cancel it. I still dont like Dean tho 2:30 i love madelaine too! But i prefer LLouise #teamlouise she's an it girl 2:50 Out of an subject but i noticed that lorelai's love interests really effected rory. Like, her leaving Chris all the time etc. 5:24 YESSS HAHA THIS IS ME WHEN I TALK ABT GG WITH MY FRIENDS OR THE SAME MOVIES WE WATCHED ITS LIKE SO COMFORTING IN A WEIRD KIND OF WAY 5:54 i love the time they first met. Maybe not the thing with Lorelai but even from the first time they met you could see Jess light in the eyes 6:13 i think ppl saying Lorelai is a bad mother bc of a wit and her 'buddy and buddy' relationship with rory. Maybe 'buddy and buddy' rule isnt great but she still teach Rory! Like not avoiding Max. I already know ppl gonna disagree with me but that's okay. You can think Lorelai is a bad mother, and im gonna think she's a good mother. 7:16 i love rory and jess. They compliment each other soo well. 8:06 Okay but that was so horrible from Chilton, like one person can't be an introvert and be diffrent. Everybody has to be like others and SoCial. And they literally so concerned abt a girl just reading a book at a break instead of real education problems in Chilton. 9:21 Jess was a jerk here. Like doing that white lines outside of a market, or later even steal smth? 10:04 Tristan oh yes. Tristan was.. Fine. I mean he was harassing rory and all that but i liked his character, adds more drama and all that 12:24 that metallica t-shirt was awful. Sorry Jess Okay! That all i have to say. Btw thank u for funny moments! They were hilarious
I loved max and Lorelai but I've realized it was never going to work he never really had a place in her life. Yes Lorelai had a way of self sabotage. This is one ☝ my favorite seasons.
I started watching Gilmore girls last year, and it turned out to stand out in my life, and became my all time fav show! I adore it, especially the early seasons from s1-3, my favorite characters are Lorelai, Sookie and Lane! I absolutely love this, and all of your videos, and couldn’t agree more with this! ❤❤keep it up Kiera and have an amazing rest of the day:))
The thing that always bugged me about Max and Lorelai is that they were probably only dating for what? 6 months before Max proposed? If I remember correctly (and feel free to correct me, it's been awhile since I did a rewatch) Max and Lorelai start dating after Rory's birthday, which is in October. That goes on for a while and then they break up for a few weeks(?) maybe a month or 2 and then when they get back together it's after it's stopped snowing, and Max proposed almost immediately. In the S1 finale you can even see the trees in the town square haven't started growing leaves yet, so by the time Max proposes it's like early spring. All that to say, I knew even on my first watch that they weren't gonna last. Their relationship got really serious, waaaay to quickly. That and I was aware enough of tropes and story lines in TV to know that they wouldn't have a main character meet, get into a relationship, and get engaged all in the span of the *first* season and actually make it stick, lol.
I just need to share that on top of loving all of your content, I am out here SINGING along to your intro every time I hear it. Thank you for sharing! "~Yes I maaaAAAAAaaaade a theme soooooong~"
Episode 21 (Lorelei’s graduation episode) was one of my favorites. I think the big part of this episode is that she missed it. She talked to Jess on the phone without her mom knowing. She went on the bus without her mom knowing. In her mind I feel like for this episode she was being a mischievous teen which we don’t see a lot of. Plus it wasn’t intentional for her to miss it. She would’ve got back on time but due to the wreck and the bus stopping that’s what made her miss it. She planned it all out correctly but the bus being on delay caused her to miss it. I liked this episode because it showed how Rory viewed Lorelai as her mother not her best friend in this episode. Which shows on how she skipped school and didn’t tell her mom she was going to visit Jess.
I’m actually glad they left it out bc I can’t imagine watching her stammer her way through it. I know she hated it. I’m thinking she called him because when she tells rory she seems fresh off emotions and there’s no mention of Max just being there.
@@kierralovestv I feel exactly the same. I'm glad they left it out, and I can't help but think it was over the phone. Even though it's an aweful way to call off a wedding. Btw, i'm a new subbie and love your channel! Have you also watched Supernatural? I'm desperately looking for a commentary channel about it, it's one of my faves along with GG
