I have been wondering about these kits for a while. Produced by coloured pencil magazine, they have been designed to help you hone your coloured pencils skills... but are they any good? Will the grisaille image help or hinder? or will it just be like a colour by numbers?
My daughter and I give it a go.

I think these might be a nice gift for the creative people in your life!! Check out the website and you can see what colours each kit uses if you want to grab those to bundle up something really special

Now what’s the difference between a Grizaye kit and a grayscale colouring book (black and white pictures, not hand drawn pictures) apart from getting pencil numbers to guide you? Can the same principle be used in a grayscale book?

Mmmmm. I’m not sure. I’m guessing the main difference would be the quality of the paper. The Stonehenge paper that these kits is printed on is absolutely lovely to work on. You would have to experiment to find out how other papers would work

I really appreciated this video. I bought a couple of the kits and didn’t really get into them. I’m going to give them another try, but this time with try Polychromos instead of the Prismacolor, based on your experience of loving using Polychromos on the Stonehenge paper. Thank you!

You're a great teacher! I love how you kept your daughter's optimism up when she felt like things were going wrong. 😊

If I had a kid I'd love to have the shared activity and interaction you have with your child here.

Aw, she really did have a lot of fun working on this piece, and it was really nice to sit down quietly together for a while as she worked. It was an unexpected bonus :)

I was looking at them for a long time too and was very sceptical, I was kind of surprised that I genuinely enjoyed the process of completing this kit. I would suggest that absolute beginners stick to the smaller, less intimidating ones; but there are some larger, more complicated ones that could suit the more experienced artist too.

Great review - love that your daughter pushed through to see that she was capable of more and that she has been drawing more after seeing her results!

This was my absolute FAVOURITE part of this kit! Yes, I had fun; and I Learned some things. But seeing my daughter learn so much, and then apply those lessons onto her own art!! Ahhh ❤️❤️❤️ my heart is filled by watching her complete her first sketchbook. She’ll be a better artist than me for sure :)

According to my humble opinion this is a gimmick, bc it is the same thing than if you print something in black and white and you are coloring on it or you can do you artwork by coloring it gray’s scale and then using you coloured pencils on it! This is nothing new at all just a paycheck for some art supplies companies with the cooperation with some artists! 😅

oh no! there is nothing new about using a grisaille base for a drawing. The technique is hundreds of years old!!but if my kid can get a hang of it, and apply the lessons she learned over a year later..... there may be something in it for beginners
