Yeah, he must have had an extraordinarily strong constitution to begin with. In fact, we kinda know that he had, as he was a sportsman in his young days (cyclist).
Ashkar Ibne Awal he wasn’t rich. Constant money trouble / broke his whole life. Drugs don’t shorten your lifespan except in particular cases. Mainly cigarettes and booze. Jerry Lee Lewis was constantly on drugs and drinking and he is 84. Ray Charles drank constantly.
777jones yeah if u don’t over due it and eat healthy(that’s the big part) u can live a long time... some ppl just have stronger genes too look at Keith Richards haha
Back in 1986, at 'The Warehouse' in Niagara Falls, NY, I saw Ginger Bakers rock trio. 97% of the attendees, were guys and most of 'em probably Bikers. My friend Skip went to the bar before the gig and left me and my wife at a table in front of the stage to chat. Just before the show started, Skip returned. I asked Skip what happened at the bar; He said he was talking to a "pretty cool, nice older, English guy". When the band took the stage, Skipped flipped out and said "That's the guy I was talking to for the last hour!". HAHAHAHA! BTW- the last song was "I'm So Glad". The stage was completely filled with dudes jamming to the Baker Trio. A bunch of maniacs enjoying the Ultimate Maniac! Never will forget the great show!
Ginger really does prove that the line between genius and madness is very thin. Undoubtably a terrific drummer, his contribution to music can’t be understated. But there is obviously something about the mans mentality that I’m sure would have made it impossible for him to have functioned in “The real world “ Luckily for him, and us he had a god given talent that despite his failings as a human being kept him in work and out of prison.
I love Ginger Baker but my GOD, if none of the rest of the stuff he's lived through took him off this earth, i would have thought smoking would. Every time he does an interview he's either smoking or has his cigs RIGHT there. He's one of the few drummers I've seen play with one in his mouth all the time. WOW
Have to thank Mr. Baker. The first song that ever fascinated me and drove me wild was White Room and in particular, the drumming. I was four years old, dancing in my grandparent's living room, eating Apple Jacks by the handfuls and dancing dancing dancing to an eight track tape of Cream's White Room. Over and over and over. I have never tired of that masterpiece and I'm 58 now!
hind sight is always 20/20 I look back on my 63 years of life and think about all the times I was a dickheaded asshole. but I can't change the things that I've done, I just have to try not to make the same mistakes again. happens everywhere to everyone.
kenneth kunie If more people were honest they would share a similar assessment of their lives. Oddly, most people fail to look inward prior to opening their mouths..
Approaching 67 y/o and noticing tendency to dwell on the shitty events. Hope this doesn't become a habit. Not the way I want to spend the rest of my days. Problem is, not too many good times to reflect on. Just glad I survived the 60's and became a productive citizen.
@kenneth kunie So after all those years, we finally find out, it was you, who was the infamous, "dickheaded asshole", that we heard all those stories about? (I think we all had that moniker at some point or other in our lives!) HAHAHAHAHA!
Ginger Baker is one of the greatest musicians to come out of the 20th century. We all know the stories of his temper and irascibility...but I can't help but love the man. There is a pathos mixed in with that musical genius. We are lucky to still have him with us...and I thought "Why" was a great album to boot!
Mr. Meatballs No..he is an Azz just because HE IS....and he will always be...... Ginger has done everything to Ginger nobody help him become an AZZ..........but his damn self...he deserves nothing more than what he has now👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
Yeah not so much, he was just about as horrible a person on heroin can be, see his sons comments, just an awful person likely on the spectrum with explosive rage issues and deep personality problems
I like Ginger in this mode. Keep it up, Mr Baker. Now that you're 80 (congrats!), maybe it's time to quit smoking so that you can play jazz for longer. Just a thought.
@@pallhe he's "holding his own" 3 days ago with no further updates which leads me to believe he's in the process of recovering and leaving hospital care
Just impulse control problems and being too cocky as it was without his father. Reminds me of my Son too hearing him go on. Live and learn. Past is past. At least he admitted it was wrong in maturity Mr Baker
Mr. Peter Edward Baker you are the absolute most inspiring drummer & musician. It was great to see you play at the Bruce tribute this past Oct.. You are in our daily prayers & please take care of yourself.
Why are you all slagging him off in this video? I know Ginger isn't the nicest guy, but this was quite a rare video that shows some of the rare emotional side from Ginger...
not yet, we have a film in progress about Pete Brown as well as a different documentary about Alexis Korner. So sorry you will have to wait a bit longer. He was very good though and did not even want to hit any of the crew
I'll look forward to it. A friend of mine at college (a long time ago) got to interview Ginger Baker for the college Rag. He said he was friendly and very funny. And drunk. I wonder if a lot of interviewers provoke him on purpose and then edit out everything except the angry bits - because that's the stuff that sells?
Was he being a little hard on himself? Any good nurse or trauma doc would be a bit surprised if he hadn't let fly a little fire after bashing his head, at least in my neck of the woods. Sounds like he was kind of assessing his experiences. To do that successfully takes courage and honesty. He sounds to me like he was being pretty honest. Last I heard that's a positive quality of character.
This guy was a totally whacked out mental case and I wouldn't have dealt with any of his shit for one second and apparently not many other people wanted too either, talk about someone being their own worst enemy and this guy takes the cake😮
I dont understand, why would they put a microphone over his head without his knowing. Seems kind of dumb. Maybe I missed something. Can anyone clear this up? Thanks.
Didn't work though did it ...cheated on his wife, gave his kid coke , ran away from everyone in his life who challenged him. Silly stunted little man child who had a great amount of talent but his shitty ego got in the way.
He upset people he respected, was scolded for it, and actually felt remorse. First time I have heard anything like that from his lips. I think he carried on being mean anyway.
Highlights the difference between the professionalism of classical/jazz musos vs. rock musicians. You would have almost expected a rock musician to have a little tantrum for this kind of thing. Probably would storm off in a huff too.
Ron Villarreal as Mike Spector said “To be a professional”. And that’s what he was ‘till the end. He never missed a gig, always performed his best, and never spoke ill of someone who he is currently working with for the sake of the project (the exception might be Hawkwind).
Sad to see that he was the fall guy for a badly positioned microphone, was given a heap of shit for it and it left a mark on him. I don't believe that was his fault.. how ironic
...when you have to add to your knowledge because somebody that you've never heard of, would have sacked Ginger Baker, IF it had been HIS band. Was this threat the height of Cyril's relevance...? I'm all set, run at me...NOW! 😄✌
I like his drumming, it's very melodic, but he doesn't half talks a lot of shit sometimes. Bonham's drumming had something which Baker's didn't - bollocks.
