Ginger Harvest & Quick Ginger Growing Guide
G'Day Folks. Harvested the 2 ginger plants I've been doing a growing trial with over the past 8+ months.
I was seeing if planting a small seed piece would affect the overall yield of the plant & think I got my answer. 😉👍
Have included a bit of a quick ginger growing guide for folks that are looking at growing it for the first time.
You can find a more in depth Ginger Growing Guide that covers cool climate & container growing here ► bit.ly/HowToGrowGinger
You can also find our Turmeric & Ginger Growing & Processing playlist here ► bit.ly/GingerTurmericGrowing
Hope you enjoyed the clip & your gardens are booming.
Cheers all,
Rob

Great pointers Rob. I've got a few smaller rhizomes of ginger growing in containers - first for me. I'm excited to see how they come out and I guess since it's about halfway through they could use a bit of a feed. Thanks again for sharing.

I grew a piece of ginger in a pot over summer in central Victoria and the stem grew to over a metre tall. I fed it weekly with fresh worm farm leachate and have yet to harvest it, as it is currently growing frost free in the greenhouse. I think harvesting anything bigger than your original piece you planted is a bonus :)

You are fabulous. I'm in Toronto, and watching for your tips for growing in our climate. We can reach 40 degrees in July but have a short growing season. Oh, I always have to remind myself my winter is your summer. Ginger is considered tropical and don't know how it would handle Toronto weather. It is March 23 and we had snow yesterday. Usually can't plant until 24th of May...so maybe 4 to 5 months outdoors. I am on a hunt for recipes for doing the pickled pink ginger which people often call sushi ginger.

Good looking ginger there Rob ! I am wondering what to do with my ginger , it is raining and completely over cast since many days which will continue for another 2 months , may be occasional sun .The leaves have either turned yellow or got battered in the rains and winds. The pot has been getting just about an hour or so of sun , so the growth has been slow since I sowed the ginger in December 2016.

Hi MBG & sorry for missing your post. I missed almost all from this clip for some reason. 😕 Did the ginger pull through or did you loose it in the end? I have seen some ginger die off due to too much water so I think that might be the issue you had. They like to have a fair amount of air around their roots & do best in free draining soil. Sorry again for missing this. BTW, not sure if you've had this issue but I'm no longer getting email notifications from any channels I've subscribed too. Are you having the same issue? Has been going on for a while now & is a real pain as I rely on my email account to keep all notifications in some spot. All my best to you & the family, Rob.

Hi Rob, Love your videos. What do you do with all your ginger?

Hi Carroll. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. We freeze most of it after we run it through the food processor. We find it keeps the best that way. 👍 Recently posted a clip showing a few methods we've used to store ginger if it helps you out any. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OyRhS62HXIY.html Cheers & have a great one.

I've been growing ginger in Florida for years now. I love your videos. I wish mine look like yours though. Florida seems to swing between drought and very little rain. I try giving hose water but they don't seem to do as well.

Hi Tangerine. Do you grow them in the ground or containers? I have a mate around Palm Beach that is having fairly good growth in his pouches. Sorry for taking so long to reply too. Cheers.

Hi really love you videos. I want to start growing ginger and garlic. In my back garden which is huge. What would be better hydroponic or aquaponic i live in london. Any tips thank you

I would grow it in a small greenhouse in soil pots if you can Kash. Will tend to stay warmer in black pots filled with soil + you can move them around if need be to chase the sen through the season. Just keep in mind that they will start to die back if you have a cold snap. Hope that helps some.

Hi there! You've got the biggest sized ginger harvests I've ever seen! Would love to know how that happens. I've tried growing ginger in my backyard just once but the seed ginger simply dried up. Probably bad timing.

Hello, very helpful video! Can you also eat the mother rhizome after the harvest or do you throw it away?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
You certainly can eat it Dafin. It can also be used to start another crop next season but I find that a few don't make it & rot in the ground over winter. The fresh rhizome will grow a lot faster than the mother so I tend to process most of the mothers. They can be a bit stringy so I like to dehydrate them & turn them into powder but can be minced & frozen as well.

I in Maryland first time having Ginger growing in 2 pots from Spring 2019, I brought the small pot inside. The large pot is still outside, 34+ degree at nights with the first frost last night. I really need your advices, when should I harvest the outside pot? what should be done to prepare for the next year planting please! How about the pot that was brought inside few weeks ago? Many thanks
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
Hi there. I would harvest that pot now. I have a few storage ideas in this clip if it helps any. The last tip is for storing the rhizome to plant out later. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OyRhS62HXIY.html The plant inside may go dormant over winter & sprout again as soon as the weather warms back up. If it does die off don't water the soil so it stays wet or the root may rot. Hope that helps some. I'll paste this over on the other clip where you asked the same questions.

Hi Rob. I read the question below about a second harvest from the mother. YOu said you've left them in the soil before and they produced a bit. We have ours on the counter after our final harvest two weeks ago. ARe we able to take those mothers and put them in water over winter and plant in spring or is it possible to plant in our greenhouse. If so, do we cut or leave them as is or is it too late?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Hi Bonnie. I would just pop them straight into the soil now if the greenhouse is warm enough. Leaving them in water may cause them to rot. I would be carful not to over water them once planted as well as they may rot if the temperature isn't quite warm enough. I like to increase watering once I see the shoots above the soil line. Sorry it took a while to get back to you.

I don't do a lot of fresh cooking yet and may not grow ginger but I was wondering if the 'mother' ginger can be replanted or even used in cooking? I'm guessing not but am kinda curious.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 6 лет назад
Hey Peyton. You can use the mother in cooking if she comes out firm enough. I was saving some to try & grow it again but it didn't last in the pantry. Will be planting some of the ginger from this lot back out today or tomorrow depending on the weather here. Have a great one., Rob

Great video! A stupid question. Can I reuse the seed ginger for a 2nd harvest? Or would you use a fresh rhizome? Also, I've planted my ginger in a tropical garden as an ornamental. Do I have to uproot the whole thing for the roots to keep well, or can I just pick out the odd bits occasionally as I need them in the kitchen. Thanks for the awesome channel :)
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 4 года назад
Hi Melanie. I have left some of the seed ginger in the soil here & it re shot from different nodes. 👍 I left all our turmeric & gingers in the soil last season so we could harvest small sections as we need them. They may need a little bit of thinning depending on the space you have available but that's no huge drama. It's always handy to keep the tinned out sections on hand in the freezer or dried for use in meals. 👍👍 Hope that helps & happy growing. 🙂

Greetings Rob, How do you know when the ginger is ready to be harvested? Thanks
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Год назад
I like to harvest them once the foliage starts to die back. You can leave them go until it dies back completely as well if you like. You could also break off small sections as it's growing if it looks like there's a lot of rhizome growth. I wouldn't take too much though as it can reduce the final yield a fair bit. Hope that helps some.

Can you please tell me if you can pack ginger planting material by vacuum packaging for long distance transportation? Can they be used later as planting material?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
I'm not really sure to tell you the truth. If they're being imported to your country they may be treated which might stop them from sprouting. Best way to check is to plant some out & see how you go I'd say. Hope you get some to sprout. 👍🌱🌱
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Hi there again. I misread this question when I answered before, sorry about that. If it's ginger that you know will sprout, I don't think vacuum sealing it for transport would cause it not to sprout once it arrived at it's destination. I do know that some countries will irradiate food that's being imported & that may be an issue with it if that's the case. Hope that helps some.
