You are RIGHT!!! I saw him in September, 2023. First time! Brilliant!!......How are there only 577 views?! Must have not been posted 'til 5 minutes ago!
Wow! It's refreshing to see Gino enjoy performing one of his first hits in a style so close to the original recording. He and his accompanists modify the arrangements to his classics so much, it's a pleasant surprise to see it done the old way.... and with verve!
There was a groove in the original studio recording of this song that he never has been able to re-capture on stage-- and I really doubt if Gino really attempted to either.. The syncopated interplay between the bass /keyboard/drums on the recording was so original and precise and identifiable and I still consider it to be one of the finest recordings of 70's pop.
I believe it was because at the time, he loved Latin, or Bossa Nova music, and that's what that song was originally. He did listen to big band Latin as well as Sergio Mendez, Brazil 66 probably when younger.
GREAT to see Gino Vannelli -- WHAT a voice !! ...and... -- Reinhardt Melz on drums - phenomenal drummer !! -- Allen Hinds on guitar - just a great guitarist ! -- Sandin Wilson on bass - fantastic 6-string groove-meister ! -- Randy Porter on keyboards - tremendous ! ( yes - the keyboard horn parts are sequenced ) It just doesn't get much better than that.
Allen Hinds was a local musician in my area of Montgomery & Auburn, AL in the late 70s to mid 80s. He was in a popular regional band named Sailor that played a lot of pop rock and jazz rock, and a lot of Steely Dan. They did an incredible 10-song Beatles medley as well as Don't Take Me Alive by Steely Dan, Mr Briefcase by Lee Ritenour, and Cruise Control by The Dixie Dregs to give you an idea of their range. They played often at Spinnaker's in Panama City Beach, FL & Nighttown in Destin, FL, both very large bars then. Spinnaker was next door to the world famous Club La Vela. Those guys had about 7 to 12 years on me & all the players my age looked up to them.
Love this!!!!!!! Look at how much the guys are into the music; they’re having so much fun! You can tell they really, really love what they do… and that love and passion comes through in every spectacular note. Really gets ya goin’! Thanks for posting this!
This is absolutely topsport! Miss Gino. I saw Gino with his Dutch musicians playing in Holland, at 'the Boerderij' in Zoetermeer. Hope he'll be back in his 'low lands' soon!
As a musician and Gino fan. His shows have been sequenced for years. Percussion, string, brass, bass, etc. I spoke with both Joe and Gino before a show in the early nineties. That night their computer froze at the beginning of the show. The techs quickly rebooted and fixed it and all went smooth. It was a great show in a small club setting. The original parts were done one note at a time on monophonic Korg synths. At one time he had 4 keyboardists with him. This make s more sense to me.
Now that I've seen this video multiple times I like the small club setting rather than the big arena setting. It's a bit more intimate don't you agree? It really shows how tight the band is and complements Gino's voice this is the kind of venue I'd like to see him perform in. A true artist!
Oooh, love Les Paul guitars. My mom knew him. And Chet Atkins. Dad was jealous, for sure. Mom played like Chet. I play a few riffs. My ex played one, but he liked Fenders...made my ears bleed...jimmy Hendrix style. Yamaha keys. I used to sequence for the band too, lead singer, percussion, on and on. Parents too. Music was all I knew, still that way, other than trying to get out and learn a new trade. Now I have a karaoke system and go around...tons of songs I've written, but I can't read music, so no copyright . I've always been a copy singer. Please learn to read music!!! Anybody interested in music..learn to read it.
Sequencer Parts Agreed but perhaps the Guitarist & Bassist are both jacked-in a Synth Brass & Synth Bass Stompboxes and who knows what the Drummer is MIDI Triggering as well? BTW, Ross Vannelli is a brilliant Sound Engineer controlling and routing the band mixing console in their live shows. No matter, Gino Vannelli is SUBLIME! Any news about keyboardist Joe Vannelli?
Reinhardt Mertz Is a Spectacular Drummer and Spot on This J Newmar Is a Total BS Why Do Cats Talk Shit Like He suppose to be something 20 years in the Business well I ve been in it 50 Plus years Never Heard of you but Reinhart yes Is Terrific . And Singer Will only be as Good as the Band He can have a Great voice but if it don't Mesh There is Noise and Conflict
@JohnMichael52 you are right, however human input from very talented musicians can stimulate a singer to give an even a greater performance that night then when using mechanical robotic tape back-ups. Face it, there are nights a voice sounds like as if from heaven, but there are also those nights when one hopes the music ends soon.
what is all the arguing about.watch the drummer;he is playing the notes dead nuts.trust me you cant fake that! just sit back and enjoy great music.this aint rap or hip hop or beyonce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry Johnnie, no sequencing. You're hearing effects on Sandin Wilson's bass and the patches Randy Porter's using on his keyboard. I hear don't hear anything I'm not seeing.
by the way I talked to Sandin Wilson for about 45 minutes before the show here last year and he was telling about his blend of synth bass and real bass that he gets from this funky old pedal that he found that's out of production
using "backing tracks" with a live band is all about get the parts from the cd happening live with incouring massive costs. As most top session players start at $200 a night. so you can add it up if they used only musicians it would be in the $3000 to $4000 range which no one is willing to pay.
The band is DEFINITELY using sequenced tracks. In fact, this is pretty much the same exact track used on the 1991 tour, with just a minor embellishment at the end. All Randy is playing is the Wurlitzer sound. There is also a percussion track playing along with the synth brass track.
I think you've misconstrued my intent. I'm by no means criticizing them for using a reinforcement track! Quite the contrary, I was originally responding to another commenter who seemed to be implying that there was no way they could be playing to a track because doing so would somehow cheapen the performance. I've certainly played on plenty of gigs with a backing track before, and I'm all in favor of using one if it benefits the overall presentation of the music (as it does in this case).
Killer musicians. Think Joe's still got the keys though....thats him on the sequenced brass. Drummer sounds like he knows what he's doin! Arrangement rivals Live in Montreal
everyoneisjosh, you crack me up! Let's hear you play like this. Gino always has wicked players. I saw them when they were in town, ... no backing tracks. I've been in the business 30 years and I think I'd know plus I knew the horn players that he hired to do the show that night. It's a stupid point anyway, why don't you blog on Britney Spears youtube videos.
But that's dick all man, the complete body of the track is being covered by real players. a little reinforcement perhaps on the horns etc, whatever! These guys are great players playing for real. I think it's dumb that you're picking them to criticize. Like I said why don't you blog on the myriad of pop stars videos that run practically EVERYTHING off of protools and if you turned off their protools and their autotune it would like someones first night in prison.
