I am studying this piece for IGCSE Music this year. It is a hard piece to learn let alone play. That was an amazing performance. I was so surprised at the fact that they were high schoolers! They sounded like a professional orchestra. Wow! I bet everyone practices 40 hours a day to get this piece. Congrats to the solo instruments in their respective movements. The whole orchestra deserve way more applause and cheers than they did in this video. This was an utterly amazing performance, a big well done.

This is the sheer joy and cumulative effect that music can have on education and living a life of quality. Community, social cooperation, and having fun...unfortunately public education has been the whipping boy for politicians and a music curriculum just one of the casualities!
@SomeUserNameBlahBlah
@SomeUserNameBlahBlah 3 года назад
It's not just politicians, the radicalization of teachers is what pushed today's education into training young children to hate things like this because it's "too White" or "racist" or "created by the patriarchy". Our youth aren't taught to appreciate the past and enjoy the great things those before us have created. The only schools today which still teach children this music are wealthy schools because the parents pay attention and won't let teachers get away with the garbage that has become public school education.

This is wonderful playing by the Santa Monica High School Orchestra! Tremendous and well done! I am British and I tend to doubt that this standard could be attained by a UK high school orchestra; I may be quite wrong, but that is my feeling. William Tell is probably the best of all Rossini overtures; an overture with not only 1-2 good tunes but 3-4 of them! I think Rossini would be knocked out if he heard this.

This IS THE single Most expressive, "descriptive" piece in All of classical music literature. As in any standard symphony form, there are 4 "movements" (sub pieces). In this case, they are: Dawn, Storm, Calm (after the storm), and Ride. As you listen, you can "See" the sun rise. ... But, soon, Dark storm clouds start gathering. First, you only hear individual raindrops. Suddenly ! ... Hurricaine force winds. Horrendous, torrential downpour. A terrific flood of rushing waters. As trees are torn out by their roots, and giant boulders are hurled down the mountain side. ... Then, when it's all over, calm is restored by nature. As little woodland creatures peek and venture out from their protective burrows. ... Finally the heroic horse chase. Sadly, the William Tell opera is almost never staged. Some musical historians mis-label the 4th movement as "March of the Swiss guards". Idiots! Just the pace alone, is a clue. It's far too fast for "marching". It's obviously the heroic William Tell fleeing on horseback. To escape capture by von Gessler's guards. William Tell, hero of Swiss Independance. No wonder depression era, independant radio-station owner George W. Trendle selected this piece -- to be immortalized as the theme song of his brain-child program. Which became THE MOST popular on radio, then later on ABC TV. The 4th movement provides the perfect tone-poem description of America's greatest and most influential role model. A character NOT intended to be an UN-Real "super hero". But, rather, to exhibit traits that ARE REAL. Which express plain old American and Christian values. A character which ANY ordinary person could emulate and immitate. And hundreds of thousands of American children DID ! Then, they went off to SAVE the Whole World, by fighting WW-2. Tom Brokaw calls them "America's Greatest Generation" in his books. "With his faithful Indian companion, Tonto ... the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains led the fight for law and order, in the early west. Return with us, now ... to those thrilling days of yester-year. As The Lone Ranger rides Again !"

Fantastic performance. And kudos to the videographer and editor. Finally I get to see what I have never seen in any other orchestra video: the ENTIRE ORCHESTRA performing, especially during the most dramatic portions of the piece. It is so enjoyable to see (for more than an obligatory 1 second shot) what is actually making the music we are hearing. It is a thing of beauty, not just for the ears, but for the eyes as well when we get to see the poetic beauty in the motion of the orchestra--which we can only observe when we get to see the ENTIRE orchestra. This is by far the best videography of an orchestra I have see so far, and I have seen many. Thank you!

( Romanos, 10:9-10,13 )

I post late, I know. I'm discovering. There are a few wrong notes, especially in the intro. Some small mistimings... also portions that are a bit too loud or uneven, but that can be a choice of the director. The dialogue between transverse flute and oboe is excellent, although one the flute breathing needs a bit of work, and the oboe takes on a bit too much importance. But at other times I don't hear the difference from a philharmonic orchestra. It's not excellent, it wouldn't even be very good for a professional orchestra, but relative to the age of the musicians and the orchestra, it's much more than respectable. And it's beautiful anyway. I'm not a specialist, it's only having listened to this piece hundreds of times that allows me to find certain anomalies. But I congratulate (a little late to encourage, this thing is 6 years old) the orchestra and the musicians!
