Many groups will do a showcase to promote their new album at the beginning of a comeback where they invite journalists to take pictures and ask questions so they can spread the word as far and as fast as possible. It's like a press conference. The photo-op is pretty standard at fanmeets, showcases, and concerts. However, this is a special photo-opportunity since it's the first time any reporters have the chance to photograph the members in their new outfits for the new album. It may feel weird to foreign fans but the fact is their visuals are as much a part of the "product" they are selling as the music and performances. In any case, I'm pretty sure the members are happy to pose for their fans.

It's actually normal in kpop showcases to have an individual photo time followed by the group photo time

I actually hadn't gotten to the interviews part yet when I commented, so I understood better after that 😅 I know visuals are big thing in Kpop, but just because something is "normal" or "common" doesn't mean it can't be weird or I can't dislike it. Just gives me an icky feeling.
