Trying to go against what Adrienne was saying like they didn’t know wtf she was talking about. You should always have a plan B even the ladies sitting at the table have side hustles aka a plan B 🙄
I'm so sorry, I've been watching the real for 3 years now and adrienne's delivery doesn't hit a lot of the times. Like I literally wait until someone else on the panel clarify's for her so I can understand point she's trying to get across.
k P You’re so right! But On this topic, I feel that what she’s saying isn’t hard to understand at all. I would absolutely want my children to go after their dreams but I would also want them to be realistic. You have to eat In the meantime. Nothing wrong with having a plan b.
All the kids living their dream 80% will not be successful. For every Will Smith there are 5 million Won't Smiths. Adrienne is the only one making sense.
Doesn't mean you give up one what you really want. The chances might be small, but that doesn't mean they can't do it. That kid might be that next one. Yes, have a back up plan, but for the love of God, *dream* big. I'm with Jeannie 1000%
EXACTLY.... what’s wrong with being a teacher, nurse, doctor, or lawyer!! Everyone is not gonna be beyonce, cardi b, lebron james! Always have a plan b
Let’s not place your perception on others! For every basic their are 10x doing greatness! For every doubter their our 20% who believe in self. Maybe if we would stopped being raised by mothers who held your mind frame more would live to their potential! I feel sorry for your children and most of all I pity you! With that self talk and belief system it’s no wonder you sit at the bottom! Please rise above this low mentality she is oh so boring and basic it no wonder nothing spectacular has happened within her own existence! We are what we believe ourselves to be do not be like this common commentator please!
I agree with Adrienne. God, I WISH I had some doubt that I wouldn’t be an actress because I put all my eggs in that basket and I am suffering now.. I never went to college and at 30 I have to start all over again! Listen to your parents! You have your whole life to live out a dream like being an actor. Go to school and you’ll be able to use those skills in your craft later. ♥️ Don’t want anyone experiencing what I am now. ♥️
Penny Parker I hope you’re in a better place able to pursue acting. I decided to get two degrees bc my parents said I had to and I am grateful bc I am now in a better place to be able to afford all the things needed to be an actor! See you on the big screen 🎭
Same I’m 31 now had multiple careers and I just now have realized I dont want to work in health care... which was something that was pushed in my my whole life!! I wanna be a baker lol
Melissa T get it girl!! You write your heart out! I love writing as well but growing up I have worked in restaurants until I landed a job at the hospital and I just remember the good old times I had in the kitchen. I would like a cafe/sandwich shop but focused more on baked goods
Adrienne is right! And Tameras mother needs to right a parenting book she raise happy, beautiful, smart, God fearing men and woman! And I need this for my children!
Yes ,glamorize beeing a doctor or a nurse or a educator ..lets glamorize careers that will show us so many things...There is more to life than TV and IG.
They never said to dress up as role models. I agree with Adrienne and also it’s easy to put a jersey on and dress up. The school just wants them to think about careers they just gave a bad explanation.
Come one Loni , you know what Adrienne was saying 🙄nothing wrong with dreaming but if you’re trying to be a Star but don’t have star power then what are you going to do? even the brightest of stars need a plan b , plan b doesn’t always mean college. Like Adrienne was saying “ a skill-set” . Go to a trade school and get that under your belt. I’m sorry but there’s nothing wrong with getting an education in an capacity. No one can ever take that from you.
Rae Baylor it’s literally just dressing up tho it’s not making a permanent decision of what the kids career is gonna be it ain’t that serious. Nothing wrong with having big or crazy dreams in this instance idk why y’all acting like it’s the real deal
That is what Loni did, but deep down inside she wanted to be a comedian. She worked 8 years as an engineer even though that was not her dream. Sometimes your plan B, becomes your plan A, thats what she means. Dont waste your young years. Follow your dreams and Plan A first. If you fail? You can always go to college at an older age. Or go to a trade school at an older age. At least you know from the age of 15-25 you put all your effort into your plan A.
The thing with becoming an actor or singer is that someone else decides if you're gonna become those things at least on a large scale. If noone hires you for roles, that's it, career over.
Yes and no. A lot of very very successful actors created their own opportunities and the industry came to them. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Tina Fey, Issa Rae, Donald Glover. All people who created their own opportunities.
@@mckenzie.8653 spot on bro. There is room for everyone in the world you just have to create your own opportunities. We get stuck because we want to be given an opportunity instead of work our way to our dream. We all have purpose, passions + talents and those are the tools we should use to live a life of service.
I agree with Adrienne. It's good to have dreams but you have to be realistic about it. Not everyone is going to become huge like the people they mentionned. These people became who they are because, along with the determination, the belief, the talent, the hard work, they also had the good timing, the universe had those plans for them. So, it's better to be practical. I love photography and wanted to become one but the truth is that is really hard to make photography as your main profession. No matter how good you are. So, i work on that as a passion and I also do studies in law on the side. You need to have more than one dream. I know a girl who wanted to be a succeful model. She worked as model but also worked in hotel management as a plan b. At some point, the modeling world required that she does a certain things (compromise) if she wanted to work with BIG fashion designers. She was not comfortable with that so she continued her way in hotel managment.
I 100% get you on that, I would have become a photographer but now I’m an interior decor student instead. Funny enough I have the highest photo grade in the college [98%] and profs always ask me why I didn’t choose it as a main profession
@@alaasusername I was told the same at an internship in a tourism office but it's too risky. Unfortunately, one can't make a living on photography. That's why one has to hustle. I think no parents should tell their kids this unrealistic idea that you can be anything you want. It's dangerous
C C I think they are going to have a different perspective because if they didn’t believe in themselves they wouldn’t be on TV now. And they probably heard their entire life they wouldn’t be where they are now
I am 100% with Adrienne. You need to have a plan b in order to work. Not everyone can be the new Beyonce or simply achieve their dreams, at that point what you gonna do? People need to stop with this storytelling, yes it's important to have dreams, but keep in mind that not EVERYONE will be able to do what they wanted to do.
As a librarian I see kids all the time doing these kinds of projects, not based on what they wanted to do, but what would be easy or look cute. Like a kid who dresses as Beyonce, but never sings a note because they just like Beyonce and have a yellow dress. They don't want to be a singer. Or they dress up as a sports star because they've got a jersey, not that they ever get off the couch and play sports. If I were a teacher I'd do like a lot of teachers do book reports. Give them a list and tell them to pick one. That way it's an actual project.
The only thing I'm gonna say is that most celebrities are only now chasing after professional degrees. And I agree with Adrienne, we do not glamourise these professional courses and instinctively humans wanna take the easy route out. Going to college and getting a degree is hard, and I am adamant about the fact that college prepares you for a lot of things and teaches you a lot of transferable skill set.
Loni is the perfect example of this. Life goes on while you’re pursuing your dreams. You need to be able to take care of yourself and family while working on your dream in preparation for your “big break.” I’m with Adrienne and Tamera’s mom 👍🏿
Honestly, I WISH schools would be more realistic. I grew up thinking I could do anything, but no one tells you the arts are completely money based. Don't tell them they can't do it. Tell them it still be hard as hell but go for it if they REALLY want it.
You know how many people end up homeless or working at Starbucks their entire life because they never had a plan B thinking they were going to be an “actress”... And to the point of a “degree sitting on the shelf catching dust”, formal education will change you and give you fundamental skills that you can use every single day. There are multiple reasons why people don’t/can’t pursue higher education, so I don’t want to undermine someone’s struggle but most of the time you can CLEARLY tell when you speak to someone who hasn’t gone to college, and that alone is a major differentiator.
I’m glad we had this topic because I recently watched an episode of one of my favorite shows “ Facts of Life “ and it was an episode where Tootie’s dad had came to Eastland and when he found out she wanted to own a salon with Natalie... he made a big deal out of it because it wasn’t what HE wanted her to do in life... which is why as a parent you need to break the curse of “ well since my parents did it and I did it , my child has to do it too “ & continue this legacy of doing something they aren’t passionate about... Also realize that your 11 or 12 year child may end up changing their mind on what career field they want to be in by the time they are 16... but you have to allow them to ! Let your children develop and make their own decisions and choices and trust them !
It IS ridiculous. My first thought was, to even assume there are only a FEW jobs in the world that are so hard to achieve is ridiculous. So glad Tamara spoke my mind on that bit. Secondly, I 100% agree with Adrienne about still having a hustle and with Jeannie for saying a kid should be able to dream it before all the realities really hit them. There will be enough factors in the world to deter them or encourage them later on. You can teach your kids about falling off of the ladder but don't stop them from climbing it to begin with.
I agree with what Tamara said. Her mother didn't discourage them from their dreams. She supported them in what they wanted but encouraged them to get an education just in case. That way you have something to fall back on. This is a great balance. You may have that degree sitting on the shelf however, when your fame is gone, then you have that degree to fall back on. You're not just stuck. Always have a back-up plan.
This is a very, very good thing. Part of the problem I and many millenials had is that we didn't start doing the hard work of figuring out what we *actually* wanted to do until college. Its important to acknowledge dreams and encourage them, but also encouraging them to have a Plan B. Being a doctor isn't the same thing as being an entertainer. There's a clear path to that career, and there is never a dearth of doctors - we always need more. Jeannie's thing about degrees that you don't want or use...that's solved by encouraging kids to do the hard work early - by encouraging them to be other things. And Adrienne is right, most people wanting to be a pro sports player or singer only want it because they have an unrealistic idea of that entails. Let's be clear: these women are victims of survivorship bias. They're letting all the people who made it and ignoring the hundreds of thousands of people in LA, Atlanta, Nashville, NYC and Seattle RIGHT NOW who have been doing the work for a decade or two, but haven't gotten anywhere.
Have a wise Plan B. I like Adrienne’s example about music engineering to lead to producing. They relate. Don’t say I want to be a music producer, but I’ll go study biology as a backup.
I think you have to follow your "passion". Most people don't have a passion. They have interests. Also, a lot of these are examples of very exceptional instances. 100 people might make it, but millions fail, even if they're great at it.
Then I’d dress up as an escort lol I literally considered that in the past when I was drowning in debt and had no job. Thank GOD I didn’t do it though, I don’t think I would be able to actually do it but I thought about it for a while there 😶
Growing up I never could figure out what I want to do on a serious note. I never had a passion. I was jealous because my brother seemed to have his life figured out so young and so did his fiancé. Now, it’s switched. I know what I want with my life finally and my brothers changed his mind and going back to school. Everyone finds their path!!
RIGHT !! WE DONT GLAMIRIZE being teachers, doctors, lawyers, journalist, etc... we glamirize pop stars, models, influencers (damm🤦♀️🤦♀️), so that’s that (and yeah, I’m saying that being obsessed with Instagram, BUT I’m studying marketing 🙌🏼✨)
Adrienne is right. Not everyone who wants be an actor, doctor, teacher, lawyer, singer will be that. Cause if no one wants to hire you, what r u going to do? Of course u can create your own opportunities but think of something else that u like as a plan be to fall on if your own opportunities dont work. A lot of people wants to be this and that but end up in somebody's basement because of no plan. Make the plan, execute the plan.
8:20 I wanted to be a lawyer which I thought was a great field but the family wanted me to be a nurse and I HATE HOSPITALS. Long story short, I took multiple major and racked up student loans so now I'm a dropout (for now) with student loans. I just wanna make fashion items and help people.
Your job as a parent is to make your kids the best THEM they can be, not the best YOU. Don’t make them fulfill what was your dream. Help them fulfill theirs.
Like Lonnie said you need a hustle. Ways to make money. Whether it is considered professional or not. When I was younger all I wanted to do was be a nurse and move up in my field. But now that Im 29 Im looking to purchase my first real estate property and Im a licensed cosmetologist which has many avenues (sales, stylist, educator, influencer, business owner, salon owner, etc.) I could have done these things years ago. We dont have to limit ourselves.
True, with parents having the responsibility to notice their children's talent. My daughter loves art, all kinds and she's 5 she is sculpting now, I buy her paint, pastels water colors, canvases, clay we're tapping into every type of art and she is so crafty and if her passion changes we will tap into it. 😊
They need to have a profession. It is easier to go for your dreams if your can still eat and sleep in a house. It is important. We need to have a generation that is educated and talented. Jeanie got it wrong this time
Everyone's missing the point... they're not telling the kids you cannot be a pop star or a sports star... they're telling the kids have a back up plan so you don't have to live under a bridge eating from the bins if your music/film/sports career doesn't take off.
Adrienne makes sense. Loni always tries to make her own point more right than the next. I wish for one time she would not be so defensive stating her own opinion. Take. Lessons. From. Jeanie. Cause she always has a great delivery.
We are so conditioned to think we should be something else rather than what we are truly passionate about. If we are more like Will Smith and Bruno Mars who followed their dreams, then there would be more successful people like them. Just like Gene mentioned, the majority of the population is not happy with their jobs. The reason why is because these people were conditioned from when they were little from family or society that their dreams were not possible or would not make them money. Like Oprah says “ Follow your purpose and success will follow”. This is why I am passionate about guiding people on finding their purpose. Well said Tam and Gene and Loni. Adrienne love you too Doll, I just think that Tam and Gene have very valuable points. Why can’t their be more Will Smith’s? I think it is possible.
Many people don't know about side hustles.... To me, side hustles are "Plan B"! My parents taught me having more than one stream of income is very beneficial! We should be teaching youngsters about financial success!!
I am from the UK and my secondary school forced us to follow these rules. Singer, actor, entertainer, psychologist, artist graphic designer, postman, bin man and dancer were not accepted as an occupation.
Why is it that pop stars, youtubers, and tv personalities don’t get credit for all the hard work they put into their craft? I’ll never forget when a teacher asked us to write down our dream job on a paper and then had us turn it in, then read them in front of the entire class and when it came to reading mine I wrote down “dancer” and she said in front of the entire class “how about something realistic” and it crushed me, at a young age if you limit kids dreams you limit what they believe that they can do.
so many parents robbed their children of not only a childhood but an adulthood and a life as well. tamera made a really great point about parents having a responsibility to pay attention to and identify what their children are good at, interested in and have a natural talent for so they can help cultivate that child's particular skill(s) etc. so many parents don't care about those things and now their children grow up and struggle to find their passion or talent later in life.
This is some of the reason why we have no teachers, social workers, doctors, garbage men/women, etc. Etc. Everyone now wants to be into beauty and traveling. Where are the young politicians and and young surgeons? The movie stars, athletes, entertainers are a small subset of the population. We need to be realistic with these young kids.
They should let the kids dress up as whatever they want to be and ask them “how did you become a pop star?” So they know that there’s work that has to put into becoming a pop star. Afterwards, hit the kids with the reality of “it’s really hard to become a singer, if you can’t, what else would you be?”
I struggle with this, because obviously they are going to say ‘shoot for your dreams’ because they are all ‘made it’. We never hear from the multitudes who tried to make it in the entertainment industry for years, and didn’t make it, and had to choose a different path.
Since I was Eight I fell in love with acting and music at that time I had won a contest at my school .managers were holding auditions kept calling my mom many times a week afterwards because they were interested in me . when I was 11 I found out about all of this and a felt really sad and really mad because she really knew it was my dream. Since then I’ve never tried to go for my dreams because I realize at the moment if my parents don’t see it in me why I’m i ? I’m just trying to say always support your children and what they want to do!!
Everyone needs a safety net to fall into if their dream job is at the top. But kids should understand that dreaming big is great but it will take perseverance and drive to get you there. Help them develop skills needed to succeed.
Omg tam has a psychology degree????!?!? Omg that makes soooooo much sense. No wonder shes so damn wise. Adrienne was right her back ground really helped her with her life in many ways but def. This job!!
I understand what they're saying but I agree with Adrienne. Have dreams and aspirations but also keep expectations realistic. It's not easy working in any profession, but how our world is set up, we can have countless attorneys or doctors, etc. It requires a lot of work but the goal is realistically there if you put in the effort. However, to be an entertainer, singer or performer you have to be lucky and connected. You can work your behind off and have the most talent, but your chances of success is 1 in millions. If everyone could follow a formula and be a Beyonce then we'd have tons of Beyonces right now. But that doesn't mean you give up that dream. If you have it takes, work for it but have at least a plan B and those plan B's should be instilled early on.
I’m confused by Loni’s statement of being behind a bit. You’re sitting at a table with sister, sister and a cheetah girl. And on a show that is a first of its kind. A group talk show with nothing but minority women. I mean I know she wants her own show but like sis you aren’t behind.
They are absolutely crazy. Adrienne is the only one that makes sense. I think they’ve been famous too long, they’ve forgotten that not everyone that works hard gets to where they are, regardless of talent. You NEED a Plan B
