We decided that all we wanted of his children was to behave and be happy. I grew up the same. In China you cannot play for too long. If you do, you get left behind. We are too many, the competition is too strong. If you rest and play for too long, somebody else who doesn't and has greater resilience towards studying will get ahead, while you'll be left behind. As much as I remember feeling the same like this little girl during my childhood, I would not allow my children to play for too long either if I was still living in China. There the gov doesn't help you, one doesn't have the security felt in the westen countries, you are basically on your own. It better be a well trained "your own", otherwise you don't stand a chance in chinese society. Most people in the west will not educate their children like that. I'm not doing it either since my kids are growing in the west. But if I was living in China, no matter how much my kids would cry for free time, they will only have the free time that I allow, and that will be very little by my own understanding of what constitutes success in China. I know that later on my kids will not get ahead in life because of the free time they've had, but because of the work they had to do. It's a rigged system, you can't rest for too long, if you don't play the game, work and excell, you will get nowhere in China. Outside of China there is more freedom and one can do what one wants, inside of China there is no freedom and you will do as you're told, regardless of how much you cry. This is what my dad told me when I was little. So then I reasoned I wanted no longer to live in China. Now I enjoy more freedom and my children do too! People from the west who see this clip must understand that this girl's situation is common place for almost every child educated in Chinese society. The way the gov rules the country is the same way we rule over our children. They scrictly must obey, or else... A sad system I would say, now that I know any different.

But sadly it’s normalised because people are forced to be this way so their children can survive in our society. But just because we live in a different environment doesn’t mean that things always have to be this way and are right to be this way.
