Learned this when I was visiting USA as an English Girl Guide in 1975. I was lucky enough to stay with girl Scouts in Cleveland Ohio who taught me this. I am now a Scout leader myself in UK and still love this song.
Ive heard this song for so many years at girls scout camp and every year its almost brung me to tear. This last school year i had finally found some friends that ment something to me and cared for me. Made me feel human. This summer i went to summer camp and this song was sung and it just brought me to tears. It reminded me of my friends and family for what they've done for me. i love this song with the bottom of my heart and i hope the legacy of it lives on through generations of girl scouts to come!!
This song always made me cry but it was one of the few songs they could get me to sing at GS camp when I was in scouts. I remember them all. I loved being in Girl Scouts. Now I am a scout leader for my son’s troop and the tradition continues. I showed him this and told him about the similarities and common ancestry between the Girl Scouts and boy scouts and you can tell it in how similar our oath and laws are. I do wish my son’s troop did more songs though. He liked this one. :). Good job!
I learned this song when I joined scouts 30+yrs ago. It has always been a favorite of mine! My daughter is a 2nd yr Daisy and she loves this song as well! We sang it at the end of the year ceremony last year and OF COURSE I was tearing up while singing this song. This year my mom (who was my leader for the 7 yrs I was in scouts) will be at my daughters bridging ceremony and I am sure they will be singing this song and I am SURE both my mom and I will be tearing up :D
I love this song! Its amazing how many different versions there are! I am from Canada, here is our version... its super similar, but we have an extra verse and a bit of a different tune to it :) Chorus: On my honour, I will try There's a duty to be done, and I say I There's a reason here for a reason above, my honour is to try and my duty is to love Verse 1: No one needs to know my name, If i've hurt someone, then I'm to blame If i've helped someone, then I've helped me and thats the way that it should be Chorus Verse 2: I've tucked away a song or two, if your feeling low, theres one for you If you need a friend, then I will come theres plenty more where I come from Chorus Verse 3: Come with me where the fire burns bright We can see even better, by its own light We can find more meaning in a campre's glow Then many have found in a year or so Chorus Verse 4: We've a promise to always keep, and to sing "day is done" before we sleep we are girl guides forever, and when we're gone we'll still be a-tryin' and a-singin' this song chorus
Love this song - always sung it our Division Thinking Day Service as a Guide. I then had it at my wedding with my Brownies and Guides singing it during the signing of the register. Brings back do many lovely memories!
I didn't learn (or hear about) this song until the last year or so.. I'm 65 now and this is one my favorite Girl Scout songs. Girl Scouts FOREVER!!! (The lady playing guitar looks SO familiar as someone that was at camp when I was (as a staff member.)
So I went to GS camp and on the night of the closing campfire and (i was freaking out cause I lost some stuff) the counselors started singing this and I broke down in tears
“Aye” is a Scottish word used in all parts of the country in agreement as in “Yes”. Also used as a friendly greeting usually to someone you know: “Aye, aye” If you also want to ask how they are doing in NE Scotland you’d say: “Aye, Aye fit like?”
Its been 25 years, I can't believe I still remember the words lol!! This and the "new friends are gold, old are silver" song. I know the american version of this, tho, its different.
What a sweet song. Thank you for having your girls share all of the songs they know. They're helping me to prepare for our camping trip this next weekend!
Thank you so much for making and sharing this and other songs. Such a beautiful reminder of special and meaningful some truly amazing times in my life.
As a former guide and guide helper . There's no better organisation. This takes me back. Yes I've been crying this version is beautiful and reminds me of wonderful campfires..❤
Amazing I went to camp Hoover in nj when I was a young girl I'm now 38 as of this year an I still remember the first hook of the song I'm shocked my memory is remembering this awesome ladies
Ladies, what a great song! Let me make a contribution to the verse in Spanish that in my opinion rhymes better: Por mi honor yo trataré si trabajo hay que hacer, yo lo haré mi promesa y ley siempre debo descubrir mi honor es prometer lo que pueda yo cumplir Gracias!
In the background and on your shirt it said 2012, I went to that girl scout thing and I believe we either sang songs or that was the one when girls modeled girl scout outfits. I recently sang this song at camp foxtail :)
I am trying to find someone singing Gods lullaby from the pax lodge songbook. all cds are out of production and I cannot find anyone doing it, any ideas please
I am desperately trying to find all the chords to this song. I have found one incomplete piece of sheet music, but not the whole thing. The one I could find on pinterest is missing a portion of the verses. Thanks for any help!
