This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the
TED Conferences. It was filmed and edited by Tijo Media at the Carpenter
Theatre at Richmond CenterStage in Richmond, VA.
As a creativity consultant and international speaker,. Courtney Ferrell can be found standing at the busy intersection of ideas, energy, and people. Her latest idea, Girl Up, empowers young women to take full advantage of their gifts, their independence, and their possibilities in order to create an extraordinary life for themselves. In the past decade, she has worked intimately with thousands of young women as a speaker, teacher, coach, dorm mother, and mentor. Her mission is to provide girls with actions and language that will help them put common (and uncommon) sense into practice and become a sought-after person without compromising who they are.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

She talked so fast, she left right after she stopped talking.. it feels like she's not from this world or this age and she needs to quickly give the message and then travel somewhere else. She's like a heroine, like some angel saving the world. It just felt like it because i feel something has awaken inside of me right now.

lessons to take from this talk: 1. self confidence is knowing you'll become bigger and stronger than you are right now. 2. perfection is not a human quality - let go of it. 3. be authentic. if it's not your thing, don't do it. 4. trust your gut. 5. if someone doesn't value you, cut them from your life right away. 6. Tess rhymes with Mess.

I'm 43 and I cried at the end hearing her say "you're not an acorn, you're an oak tree"... because how often does this society make us feel so small and less JUST because we are women? Too often. And I get so tired of trying to prove myself to everyone and even myself sometimes... I just want to be the beautiful me that I know that I am. And I just love this lady for reminding us of how beautiful we ALL truly are... no matter our scars and the ages we carry. Thank you Ted Talks for sharing her with us!
@Sparklytank

This woman is incredible! THIS is what girls need. The whole community thing, too...YES..Sooo needed right now. I also very much agree with mentorship and self-esteem building for young men, but that should be and probably is another TedX talk! For a very very long time in human history, girls have been completely brainwashed to only keep aiming for a nebulous (and, no one tells them), impossible 'perfection' -i.e...the ability to nurture ALL others and give until exhausted, depleted, while unassisted, no less, and inside they are sad. This is all while ignoring and berating the self, and of course trying to be the society's standard of beautiful, just to be acceptable as female, and always hearing 'get used to accepting less', (as so many are STILL being told) in so many arenas... these are just three common examples of what is reality for women. Society needs awareness of this reality, and needs to encourage what this woman calls, 'girling up'. There is so much greatness, and, there will be, finally, balance, in this world, when these encouraged, equalized and loved women grow up!!! Thank you to this incredible woman for this Ted-X talk!

So beautiful!!! And Just because this talk is for and about young women doesn't mean it's anti-boy. It just means that empowering young men and women separately and differently is appropriate and in doing so both are positively impacted. I think when we expect more for ourselves we offer those around us opportunities to want more for themselves. Everybody wins (or at least can choose to).

I ADORED this TED Talk! Her energy was contagious and what she speaks of, is how I approach work with the youth I am fortunate enough to support. If I run a girls group next year...this is SO going to be a part of it to inspire each other. I WISH I had had a mentor and that's why I go hard for the youth I work with as I know I would've reached different heights if this type of sister love existed when I was entering the work force. And this is 3 yrs old?! It's applicable to today...probably even more so considering all the movements over the last few years.

I'm glad that more people like her and others are telling the truth about "love" and how misinterpreted and misunderstood it is to us millennials and the younger generations. We must start with ourselves FIRST and really get to know who we are and love ourselves instead of finding meaning or a purpose within some guy/girl that you will be dependent on because you thin you're experiencing true love but its all an illusion. I've experienced it myself and I gotta admit I fell in love with the illusion of "love" and the tingly sensation I got every time I saw him..... but in reality he wasn't perfect, in fact, he was someone I would never have seen myself dating or getting married to but I was so desperate for attention and meaning that I was blinded from the truth. But now I am awakened by the fact that I need to still live IN THE NOW!!!! (VERY IMPORTANT) rather than always planning/thinking in the future. I need to know who I am, I am still a stranger to myself and I am very surprised with who I was, who I have become and what I am doing every day and how that impacts my life and goal.

I loved when said something like: believe one day you are going to be something great. Because I always felt this but around me believes in me really. This motivated me to keep believing in myself, no matter what anyone says.

I loved this! This is what we need in the world. We have to leave all the bs aside and mentor the person next to us. The teenager, the elder, the friend, the neighbor, the kid, the co-worker, the sibling Just leave your prejudice and be that person to mentor. And if you can't do that then ask for help. It could only make us better...

I am an 18 year old girl and I have dreams and ambitions, which I often forget about, partly because I feel lost and I need guidance to be able to pursue them. I wish I had mentors, no matter what their job and interests are, because I would learn from them. However if I do not get any help and have to make it on my own, I intend to make an effort to help those young women after me, because we all need guidance and empowerment to accomplish being the best versions of ourselves. I wish one day I will be able to inspire young women and generally people all over the world like this woman has inspired me. Maybe I'll try to do a public talk even though I have stage fright, but any way will be good enough.

Sarapv87 Books written by or about successful ppl can act as your mentor if you don’t have ppl irl available to you. I reccomend Jack Canfield’s Sucess principles as a start on how to understand what you want and how to go about getting it. Or to start thinking at least, as following it strictly might give you tunnel vision in a negative way.

I think you learn.. and don't be afraid.. Take youre time.. Most important is take good care off yourself.. learn to say no.. don't be too nice. Love yourself.. Do something you like.. and find a balansen in work/study and time too relax. Money makes you independ.. and is therefore important.. Wish jou luck.. life is a powerfull and you learn.. who you are.. in time.. and what you need to be happy..

Im so proud of this woman. She's like a godmother to us teenagers. I think every teenager needs some kind of mentor other than their parents to guide them because we teenagers don't really follow what our parents say. I know they truely care for us without anything in return but trust me on this one we really need some kind of cool mentor and cool peers.

I felt so motivated by this talk and I realized that I'm already doing a lot of what she said! I think as viewers we form a community here, so why don't we help each other to achieve more! Personally I am very into environmental issues and education, and I am going to organize a public event in my high school about that. I'm also a self-taught artist who likes drawing despite my parents ' indifference for art. My word is do what you love and start doing, now.
