I like how the title can refer either to Gimlet or the young blond girl in front of her.

This is simultaneously one of David’a most accessible pieces, and most disturbing.

Having read this after reading many of his other works, for me it was slightly more disturbing.

Very powerful story. Read it today and it had me disturbed, and glued to the page. Also felt horrified, and kind of groomed by the narrator at the same time. Layered in irony, striking imagery, and wit. Great reading, by the way! :)

The ending is such a stark cutoff. All of David's stories sound like the characters stream of consciousness. I think that the stark cutoff is a bit reflective of that, since there is no point in thought where things just stop at a satisfying end. As soon as the first thought ends the next begins.

It is two things. Honest. Too honest. Obvious. Too obvious. Bratty. Bratty about needs and frivolty. This is exactly what I expected.

Dude this is so fuckin hilarious. DFW was so ahead if his time, it's so real it's more true than non-fiction.

I totally agree. Especially in some of his essays, his depiction of reality is crystal clear.

IDK whether DFW was appalled or attracted to these characters. I suspect he wasn’t appalled enough.

I think the narrator is waking up from a dream. Or being disturbed from a daydream in a mental hospital.
