I'm a girl who games. I couldn't be with a guy who doesn't game. Having a partner who games is great. You can split the price of games and swap them back and forth. I can also stop pretending that I want to be in a bar drinking (like most people expect you to want to do) when I'd rather be gaming with someone or watching a really old bad movie or talking about graphic novels.

I love doing all those things as well, but while I wouldn't avoid a relationship with a girl who doesn't game, it would be nice if she was at least open to giving it a try :)

Johnny is being the excellent storyteller that he always is. My history with regards to my video game hobby and dating is very scarce because I married the second woman I ever dated. My first relationship, she was not interested into video games or anime at all - but she never really gave me any grief about it. We were very respectful to our own interests, because I was into anime, video games, movies and she was into reading, cross country skiing and she was a very athletic person as well. That relationship lasted for 11 months, and I hold no ill will towards her and she made my life very enjoyable for those 11 months. My wife, she literally loves all the same things that i do, but she doesn't play as many video games or watch as much anime as what I do, but I still appreciate her for the person she is. She always picks up new hobbies and I'm interested with how much she gets into them, but we have a great system when it comes to balancing our priorities with our hobbies. For example, when I'm home - I don't feel comfortable sinking any time into my hobbies unless all the household chores are done, and and my wife is looked after. The moment that she doesn't need me, is the moment I can game. We need our personal space and we're great at understanding that. Keep up the great stories as always.

You always do the best comments don't you? You seem to put as much effort in your comment as went into the video. It feels respectful to the creation at hand.

My ex girlfriend hated games that I played that had cleavage showing or any games that had a girl for a protagonist (she wanted me to trash my copy of Mirror's Edge!). My current girlfriend, who I love with all of my heart is a gamer and she even got me into the Persona series and some indie games!

Johnny, your stories are perfect. The actual events of your life are entertaining themselves, but you're also a great storyteller on top of it. I think that's what I love most about your videos. I just started watching you recently, starting with your FFXI video, and gotta say, you're now one of my favorite channels on RU-vid.

In high school all the girls I dated were not into gaming and though it was super nerdy. Then 8 years ago during my Junior year of high school I met a girl with an entire family of gamers. She loved games and played with me. You better believe I put a ring on finger. Now we have a son. Can't wait to show him gaming. My advice to gamers out there is to find a girl who shares your hobby. It makes a huge difference in a relationship.

I'm a nerd who married a nerd. Seriously, when we met, I was an IT guy and she was a librarian. I mean, virgin, big ugly sweater, and HOT. We're both avid gamers. The funny part is, when we met (mutual friend), we were totally not each others type. I was heavy into the Goth/Cybergoth subculture, and a complete wild nut. She was very conservative, and dated mostly country boys. Well, I'm happy to say, 17 years and 3 kids later, we are still happy as ever and showing our kids the love of games.

Only funny story i remember is when i was in high school. Me and my girlfriend were having sex in my bedroom and i had the tv on in the background. Final Fantasy IX was about to come out and a commercial for it came on tv. I hadn't seen the commercial yet so I stopped and started to watch it... Apparently she didn't like that very much lol

At age 15 I remember having to drop something off at my dad's landlord's house and his daughter answered the door with a huge bowl of cereal and Super Mario World paused on the tv. She used to come over to my dad's house and we'd play Nintendo 64. I asked her out while we she was playing Cruisin' USA. Unfortunately our relationship was very short because her dad didn't allow it. I'm going to be 35 soon and I never did find another girl like her. Everyone I dated or tried to date in the past 20 years was horrible. I would do anything to have someone like that now.

Im a girl and I love to game. Ive actually been gamimg since I was 7, but I wasnt big into it until I met my boyfriend in the video game club at college. He introduced me to so many different types of gaming that i never even knew about! Everytime we spend time together, he's showing me some of the games in his collection and even 7 years later, we still have lots of fun! When we want to take vacations, instead of going to the beach or something we go game hunting at out of town thrift shops and locally owned gaming stores. We always have a great time ^_^

i have been playing games since the 80's. i have kept'ed every game i bought from the atari 2600, nes, sega days all the way up top the the xbox one days we are living now. i am surprised how many young girls in the 20's love the old school retro games. they love to come to my house and play the actual carts on the old systems instead of the rom's. what's cool is after i let them play my old games, they let me play them. makes me glad i kept'ed all my games.

Great video Johnny. It reminds me exactly of my experiences dating in high school. I agree some of us have to go through seeing a lot of different people to find the one person that's worth a lifetime. I had so many bad or stagnant relationships with the guys I met at school. I gave up dating entirely and became that kind of isolated little 'gothic-punky' girl that went straight home to play ORPGS for 10+ hours every day. And I remember being alienated by those that believe these kinds of gamers just waste away in a basement and get fat and ugly or something. So I just hated everybody in real life. Then one day I met this guy that would be my husband for the last 5 years and still going strong. We met in Maplestory, it was still a hit ORPG back in it's day, I will never regret my ridiculous obsession with that game. So after I flew across the country to meet with my new boyfriend in person for the first time, he then showed me many kinds of games on the PC and hundreds of games on the consoles. I am now totally into a different genera than I was before. My obsessions are Bloodborne, the Souls series, and Monster Hunter. I am just a happy nut for killing large bosses. I am at the happiest point in my life, and I wouldn't credit just my special one, but gaming was very important in the bonding we had for each other too.

From a person you don't know on the internet, I wouldn't take that approach. There are plenty of women that feel the same as you. Clean yourself up, get your diet in order if it's not, spend a portion of your free time exercising and smile and say hello to strangers. Your self confidence will build and when you spot a woman that strikes your fancy you'll be more likely to approach her. Don't condemn yourself to a life of loneliness, there's someone out there for you.

I appreciate the sharing of your positive experiences. Dating among people who play video games always seems like such a stigmatized thing, and not everyone has perfect relationships, I'm sure there were some negative experiences you omitted from the video for privacy reasons but I appreciate that you have generally positive experiences you can look back on without hate or regret. I've had my ups and downs dating but I'm currently in a happy relationship and my girlfriend has similar hobbies as well, so things are looking pretty good for the future.

My aunts were gamers back in the day. I remember late 90s playing the NES with them. Early 2000s when they got the n64, I would be amazed just watching them playing Ocarina of Time. They bought me games for my Gameboy color. They really brought out the best of the multiplayer games on the n64, my two aunts, me and my younger brother. Mario Party was super fun with them.

I'm like one of those weird guys, I never really dated when I was a teen, I just always preferred playing video games and hanging out with my friends all the time, having fun etc... When I was 25 I met a girl because she left a comment on one of my shitty old youtube videos, we started talking via comments, switched it up to messages, that went to chats, cam sessions and real life meet ups. We had so much in common including a great love for video games, she grew up with video games just like I did, the Legend of Zelda, Morrowind and all that good shit, we're engaged now and have been living together for over 7 years. I could never not have started dating someone who does NOT play video games, I needed a partner who shared that exact same love on the exact same level because I wanted to keep enjoying it without having some hag breathing down my neck judging me, this shit is supposed to be fun and stay that way, I was patient enough to wait and that paid off. We moved through several countries to be together but man, that was the best decision I ever made in my life.

I lucked out and met my GF about 19 years ago, and while she’s not nearly as into games as I am, she respects that it’s something I enjoy. Just like she has hobbies of her own that I don’t care about. That said, I definitely played way too much call of duty in the era of 4 and Black Ops, like everyday, and look back with understanding that I wasn’t a great partner during that time. And sometimes we do have game days where we’ll break out the genesis or snes and she’ll kick ass at Sonic or Sim City while I play something else. Fun times. Definitely important to not try forcing things with people, and to be honest about your interests. If a new prospective partner can’t accept a part of who you are, then no matter what that relationship is never going to flourish properly.

My girlfriend is just as into games as I am. Into playing them at least, she's not as much of a collector, but there are definitely some systems she absolutely loves getting everything she can for (the PSP comes to mind). In fact, I'd go as far as to say she also gives me my best ideas for my channel and the best RPG recommendations as well.

Yea I hate it when I'm talking to a girl and they ask what I'm into and when I say stuff like anime, games and movies which are all really huge things in my life they kinda look down on you for it when they respond with really basic things, going out or like normal TV shows or sports activities its also so annoying when you get oh I study/work so I don't have time for that kinda stuff. ...ugh man your so lucky to have Kim, curious of how you met. I wish I could find a girl like that, I've never been lucky in love.
@groalerable

honestly I don't care much about this kind of thing. Mutual interests may help spark a relationship, but a girl could care about nothing but makeup and reality tv for all I care. Sense of humor and just the general way you act as a person is more important to me once you get down to it.

My first love use to play on PSOne with her younger brother. When we're started to date she liked to watch i am playing games like KOTOR and Jedi Knight, cause she was a big fan of Star Wars herself. And she playing a lot of adventure games back than. Unfortunatly, she's the only gaming girl i am crush in, but i have a very nice & sweet girl friend who is skilled CRPG and JRPG gamer (also fond of strategy/tactics such as Total War or Crusader Kings), and also a quite good DM.

Funny enough, I also dated a girl named Carrie in my early early 20's. She was into games. Not as hardcore as me but one of my fondest memories I had dating her was, when the original Fable came out on Xbox, she and I would cuddle on the couch and she'd really enjoy and be into watching me play that particular game. It was a good experience.

The first girl I went out with was really into video games, just like me. We dated for about 3 years until we broke up since she preferred hanging out with her own friends rather than me, her then boyfriend. That aside, though, she was really into Sonic, Zelda and Pokemon, which resulted in some fun times that included helping each other out in Zelda dungeons or talking about our favorite Pokemon. The second girl I had a crush on I met in (Who'd have thought?) video game design class. Throughout that semester, everyone in class were divided into groups for this project to design our own video game. She was in a different group than me, but her seat was close to mine, so whenever my group would be working on our game, I would occasionally glance behind me to take a look at her. I kept trying to build up the courage to ask her out throughout that entire semester, but ultimately I couldn't do it. It was probably for the best, considering how she was a Senior and I was a Junior.

I feel like a mythical creature from the way of things. Being a girl that games has always been the norm. Played all of the hand-me-down consoles and games. Kept them all and it turned into full blown collecting. Video games has taken over my life for the best. Met awesome people, met the love of my life because we had something in common and games give me something to look forward to. I'm never bored and I'm always discovering new games, new and retro. I was always popular with the guys at school because I was the only one that could hold a conversation about games and teach them things they never knew about. I'm proud I grew up surrounded by nerdy things. Even anime like DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, Tenchi Muyo and Akira. It's what made me who I am today. It might sound super cheesy but it helped me a lot. I was super shy and didn't like talking to anybody but I if we talked about games everything changed. I will play games as a cool old grandma late in my future :D

I am into games, anime and books and my roommate is also into anime and games and there are a lot of other girls who are as well, I think it is a stereotype about us not being into these things. From a female perspective, guys would think I was weird for liking video games. Growing up it was always hard being "that girl who likes video games". I would occasionally find a guy who would be totally cool with it and we would talk about games, but most guys would act shocked and think it was weird. I never really understood why it was weird for a girl to be into video games. My dad would play video games all the time when I was a kid, and I would play with him. This developed my love for video games, and I got into video games even more than he was. It was always hard finding a female friend to talk to, as most of my friends growing up were not into games or they only really played a few games. It wasn't until middle school that I even found some female friends who were sort of into gaming. To this day, I still haven't found another female who is as passionate about gaming as I am. My circle of female friends that I have now like games and we play games a lot, but are not hardcore gamers like myself. I am actually a collector and not just a gamer. I have 300-400 games and 15 different gaming systems (not including handhelds which push that number to 21). I would love to actually meet another girl who was just as passionate about gaming as I am. I know plenty of guys who are, but not so much girls. Thankfully now it isn't really weird for girls to be into video games anymore, but back in the 90's I was an anomaly, lol.

My girl has always been with me since I was born. Johnny, meet my hand, my hand, meet Johnny xD But seriously, I've only had like maybe 3-4 girls in my whole life. My first was Janine when I was in my early teens. I remember she had a Genesis for Xmas bundled with Sonic 2, blew my mind. I remember her being alright but her father hated me I think. Everytime he looked at me when I came over, he had disgust in his face...jerk. Oh, and her little brother was crazy. I remember one time I came over, he shit his diaper and took it off, grabbed a handful of shit and chucked it at me. REALLY?! Like, wtf. I dodged it luckily and it stuck to the wall. My last was a long distance relationship (man, those don't work) Her name was Rachel and we talked everyday over voice chat for 5 YEARS!!! She was a pain to handle, I thought we were soulmates but she was an extreme feminazi, so it didn't work in the end. She would drive me crazy and complain about everything I liked that had girls in it that were "fanservice". It ended in heartbreak, one of the only real times my heart was shattered into a million pieces.

I've got two funny stories 'bout girls and gaming, both with my 2 ex-girlfriends. The first one - she was my first gf, and it was about 2002-03. I was really focused into collecting for the Neo Geo Pocket back at that time, and also the GBA. There were some papers on my desk, all printed receipts from videogame transactions that I had done, and I kept it as kind of a secret. I mean, she knew I was into videogames, but she didn't know I used to spend a part of my money on this hobby. When she saw those receipts, she got really angry and threw the papers all over the floor, causing a little bit of a scene. In her opinion, I was wasting my money on useless s**t. But, we all know this is just a matter of perspective. I don't date her anymore, but I still maintain my VG collection, including these games I've bought on that time. The other story happened about 2009, and I was with my second serious GF. This time she was also a gamer. A good thing, right? Well, not necessarily at all times. Coincidentally, she was playing my Neo Geo Pocket Color. At some point, she started to play SNK vs Capcom Card Fighters Clash. And I just let her(I guess I was more focused playing Xbox 360). The next day I wanted to play SVC: CFC. I turn on the game, and think: 'where is my save file???'. She had OVERWRITTEN a save file of about 85 hours or so of playing. I don't remember if I had catched all the possible cards, but I suppose I had, because there were only just about 4 to complete all the cards in the game. If I remember correctly, you're supposed to link this game - the SNK version - with the Capcom version through a link cable to get those remaining 4 cards. So I the game was 99% complete, and my ex-gf just ERASED the file. Man, I've got pissed off at her on that day.

Never had a relationship with a girl who gamed. Had a few who didn't mind it while others looked down on it. The important thing is balancing it. I also have a lot of other hobbies that involve outdoor stuff like skiing, hiking, playing soccer, etc... so most are surprised I game. It's nice it is more main stream and I do like to prove the stereotype wrong. You can be really into games and also be very social and have other hobbies. Enjoy life!

Speaking as an erstwhile "Goth-Punk" kid (Industrial branch, none of that Toreador silk and lace shite), for me it was right around the early to mid 90's. Keeping in mind, a.) I was a theater-kid growing up, and b.) VtM was a thing. Also, one of the earliest dates that I had with the woman I am now going to propose to just after my birthday in December was when I went to her place and she asked me if I liked video-games. Yeah sure, I said. Growing up, I used to make some decent coinage collecting quarter-bets on Street-Fighter Alpha and the like. Helped me pay for my lunch as a poor kid. She then subsequently beat my ass in Bloody Roar 1 and 2. I am still in the midst of gathering up the other games and their subsequent consoles.

I once had a traditional wife. Well, actually because of my cultural beliefs and family's traditions had multiple wives. They varied in age but for the most part it was a very happy relationship. Everything was going swell. In my culture, there's less emphasis on outcasting or treating people differently because of their differences. So, I could spend all day playing video games or doing whatever and it was respected instead of used as a way to harass or disadvantage me. I could trust them to be the wives they were (There weren't manipulative whores who could take what you have or who you are and use you for everything they could, then use their powers for good, as in the long run; there were no lies). But then, I woke up and it was like time fast forwarded from 1492 to sometime to do with nazies to 1984 to today and I realized it had all been a manifestation of nothing much. Oh well.

I have a lot of emotions attached to Final Fantasy XI because I met a girl in the game that I fell really hard for. It was a long distance relationship for about 6-8 months before I decided to move across the US all the way to Flordia to live near her. It wasn't an idea situation since I only had a minimum wage job at Wal-Mart once I moved there. She was still living at home and her father was a pastor and did not like me. I had to live in a room at the back of an old Puerto Rican lady's house because it was all I could afford. I didn't have internet there, so I had to leave my PC set up at her house, and I could only play FFXI when I was at her house. And her parents had a curfew for me. I had to leave by 10:00 pm every night, and I usually didn't get off work at Wal-Mart until 7:00 pm. There were even shifts they made we work were I didn't get off until 11:00 pm and I didn't get to see her at all. This was awful for me, and I hated how little time I got to play. Because I barely got to play FFXI now, she began to just move on in the game and progress without me. She barely talked to me even though we were playing together in the same room. In fact, if I wanted to talk to her, I had to sit down next to her, log in, and send her messages in-game. But you know, she was really cool, we had so many of the same interests, I really really loved the time we actually did get to spend together. It sounds like an awful time, and maybe it was, but at the time I liked her so much that I ignored all that stuff. I put up with it for about a year. Eventually I came up with a plan to move back home, get a management position at my old job, then hopefully move her up to live with me and progress our relationship. She agreed to the plan upfront, but apparently had other plans I didn't know about at the time. Once I was home, she first tricked me into giving up all my good FFXI equipment and gil under the idea that we would both quit together and play other games. I did it because I trusted her completely at this point. Then she got on AOL instant messenger with me and gave me the "We need to talk." line. She broke up with me. Before I even had time to process it, she cut off all the ways I currently had to contact her so I couldn't even protest. I couldn't even play FFXI anymore because my character had no money or equipment, and I had way too much emotional baggage attacked to it to keep playing. This was my first real break up and it destroyed me for a long time. I'm still not sure if I'm 100% over it, but I did move on. Maybe 2 years later I started dating the girl I'm married to today. And she doesn't like games at all, but that's ok. I'm training our 6 year old daughter to become a gamer.

My first love blew my mind when she destroyed me at Killer Instinct. I was at her house and she had two little brothers. They were playing the game and challenged me to play them. I stomped them down and they appealed to their older sister to show me what was up. She declined and acted embarrassed to have them insist she not only played, but was really good. I goaded her into a match and she annihilated me. I was already in love with her, but this was a moment when something snapped inside me and the amount of attraction was amplified by about a billion times. Once she realized I didn't care about losing to her and wouldn't make fun of her for playing games we played quite a bit. Mario Kart was a favorite. Life got in the way and we grew apart. Since her no women I have dated have been into games. They will typically play certain titles (match three games) but refuse to try anything else. It makes me sad. I want to share!

hey Johnny, great video as always . I'm a gamer girl I started getting into video games at the age of 5. I grew up with 4 brothers who are all hard core gamers so i go into it as well .back then it was very very rare for girls to play video games where I live, people had this idea that video games are for boys in the past which I always thought was stupid even back then, though i loved video games I could really chat about them because hey I'm a girl, even with I have a conversation with boys who game I would be pushed away because of that . it was very frustrating back then yet it didn't stop me from getting into gaming even more (I'm just stubborn) it shaped me to who I am and taught me alot, especially in the PS1 era were story telling was big in games. I got to where i am with art and stories because of video games, I'm very lucky that i didn't change back then when it was rare and even weird for girls to be into video games. I know it's very late to post a comment on this topic but I just wanted to share my experience.

None of the women I've ever dated have been into video games. My wife has very little interest in video games and zero interest in anime. She doesn't mind video games that much but she gives me grief over anime. Her impression was that all anime is hentai. I tried to get her into anime by watching the first episode of Berserk but she really didn't even give it a chance. She basically just goes into the computer room whenever I watch anime. That's why I find it so unbelievable when I see women like Kim that really dig anime and video games. It's like finding the holy grail. Don't get me wrong, I love my wife but I do wish she could get into my biggest interests.

I had one girlfriend eons ago that was borderline ok with games, we occasionally played puzzle and 2d fighters against each other. However, that ended when i got a Dreamcast and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. I was threatened that if she came home one more time and heard "Let me take you for a ride" one more time...

The only thing about alot (not all) of non-gaming women is that they dont understand its a hobby like everything else. They have no issues with you going for soccer practice (insert any sport) a couple of times /week but if you want to game with your friends at home the same amount of time its another story. Its getting better but gaming/movies etc are still not acceptable as a hobby for someone my age .. turning 40 in a week.
