Girls Alone (Social Experiment Documentary)
Boys Alone tested the common belief that a pack of boys left together in a house with no adult control for a long period of time will self-destruct - the theory couldn’t have been more right. This film applies the same house rules and observes what happens when ten 12 year old girls are left in a house alone for five days.

Fortunately I know quite a few boys who were brought up differently and who are now 12 and are soft and caring and respectful and good-mannered - and they will make great friends, husbands and fathers. Sade was for sure a bully and an instigator but I think, with all things considered, these girls did a good job of cooking, cleaning, and generally taking care of themselves. ESPECIALLY when you look at how the boys (barely) functioned. They made chore charts and cleaned, baked and cooked for each other, and were able to resolve conflicts fairly well. I feel awful for Sherry though :( poor thing. Super interesting documentary concept, I wonder how things would be different if they tried to replicate this now...?

With this having been filmed in 2002, this year marks 20yrs. It would be interesting to get all these girls, now women of 30-31, together. I think it would be interesting to see them have a weekend together. Then follow that up with having each of them sit down and review the first documentary and share their thoughts and views. Sociologically speaking, it would be an interesting study to juxtapose the two time frames and see the similarities and differences in their characters and take a look into the causes of dramatic shifts.

@@nickgarcia6572 ya, it would be quite interesting to see what they are like now after 20 years. And to get to see what their individual reactions would be to the original video. If they would be embarrassed or lament their behaviors, if they would look back and see how they have changed, etc. But it would have to be that they spend the same amount of time together being filmed and then rewatch the original video so as not to influence them to change their behaviors intentionally. Charday reminds me a lot of myself when I was her age, and that sucks. I can see how much of a bully she was, not taking accountability for her actions and either not seeing how upset she made the others or didn't care. I was the same way for a lot of my life and didn't realize it until I saw others like me treated others or myself like that, also therapy has helped a lot. I hope she's doing better now, same goes for all the other girls.

Yea but she did though. Also socialized. She responded better than most in these comments would finding out she had the most votes to be kicked out! She got a bad wrap for having “a dirty mind” when the other girls where talking about their chest in a talent show song. I respect your comment though because unlike all these other liars in here your comment is the only one that claims to see yourself in her. She wanted to do what the initial rules was in which “there was no rules” she wanted to stay up and be a kid.

Probably the worst part... when she's leaving and the girls are begging her to stay, one girl pipes up and says " don't leave, you're the one that cooks!" THAT is the epitome of people like sherry's life. Don't stay because of how amazing I am, stay because I'm useful to you. And to think someone called her "useless". I just watched the boys alone documentary before this one and it’s so interesting to see the differences between the two. The boys were more physical with each other when they got into fights and more destructive, making a bigger mess in the house while the girls got into a lot of arguments and were more emotional than the boys. I found it interesting how both the boys and the girls had “trouble makers” in the group, being Sade/Sharday in this one (obviously) and Michael in the boys documentary. I also found it very interesting how the girls talked about more inappropriate things than the boys, like suicide, rape, eating disorders etc. Also, there was more of a range in social and emotional maturity with the girls. (The boys seemed to be more or less at the same level with each other at least according to what I observed). Lastly, the boys hated each other and couldn’t wait to get out and go home by the end of the documentary it seemed like near the end they didn’t want much to do with each other and while the girls missed their parents (as you can see them making cards) and were happy to go home they “came together” despite all the drama and arguing that went on and put on plays and talent shows. I’m obviously not a psychologist or anything but these are just some things I observed and found interesting watching both of the documentaries lol. Also, sorry to spoil anything for the people who haven’t watched the boys documentary yet.

Comments on Sherry centre on her being the “good one.” But a 12 year old who acts as a caregiver has had too many responsibilities put on her and she internalized this role. I don't know, I think boys are naturally less empathetic. I'm not saying they don't feel or have emotions. It's just in a much lesser degree than it is with girls. Boys at that age just don't seem to care as much as a girl would.. In short, I don't think it's lack of teaching them empathy, but lack of caring enough from their side if that makes sense.
@peterlewis2178
@peterlewis2178 Год назад
@@maggielostfairy1108 That sounds dangerously close to being sexist. Culture and upbringing are the biggest factors in how people turn out. Yes, there is a genetic component as well, but it's minimal in comparison to how we're shaped by the society we're raised in, and the values we're taught. I don't think that boys are intentionally taught less empathy. But our culture heavily enforces empathy for girls, and doesn't do the same for boys. You can see it even in the kinds of toys girls and boys generally are given to play with. Girls are taught to care for things like dolls, even simulating caring for children. Whereas boys are given things like trucks and superheroes, and their play is often more violent, which only serves to subdue empathy. Mind you, this is coming from a man, so I've seen and experienced a lot of these cultural pressures to subdue emotion. Granted, I had a very good upbringing, so I didn't experience the full extent of this. But, even still, I could feel it. Sometimes subconsciously. For example, I learned to suppress my tears. Not intentionally. I knew, logically, that it's okay to cry, but our culture hammers it in boys' heads that they aren't supposed to cry, and that affects you, even if you don't realize it. It wasn't until the past few years that I realized that I'm always instinctively suppressing my tears instead of letting them come, and now I usually have to actively work against my own instinct in order to cry. Ultimately, it's a really bad idea to apply blanket traits to groups of people. The world is rarely that simple. And just because something appears a certain way, doesn't mean that it's actually the case. Your sampling of boys/men is miniscule in comparison to the whole group. And I can understand how it might seem from your perspective that boys are just less empathetic. But you should try not to jump to conclusions about ALL boys/men, just based off of those experiences and your perspective. That's the root out of which things like sexism and racism are born, and it's very dangerous thinking. P.S. To be clear, I'm not trying to attack you. I'm only trying to point out the flaws I perceive in your approach, as well as give you my perspective, seeing as I'm a part of the group you were applying your assumption to. If you're curious about my perspective on anything, or have anything else you want to talk about, I'm more than willing to talk.
@maggielostfairy1108
@maggielostfairy1108 Год назад
@@peterlewis2178 Thank you for taking your time to explain thoroughly. I understand why you'd think that I'm being unintentionally sextist but still I insist.. Why are trucks given to young boys? Why don't they play with dolls like girls do? I don't think it's because that's what their parents provide them with. I think it's because of their choice. Are you a lone child? Brothers have been "forced" to play dolls with their sisters. Or sisters to play with trucks on the soil and mud with their brother. I understand your perspective, but like you said, you talk from experience. In one of my country's culture, crying is the definition of weakness in both genders. And actually from my perspective, only in recent years, crying has turned into something more acceptable (and that actually has happened in Western countries). I do think it's more of a genetic thing rather than cultural - without of course saying that culture doesn't play a big role in our lives, I know it does.

It was wonderful to see the compassion the girls exhibited for one another...and how forgiving they could be. Sharday made herself the centre of attention in this documentary. You can't help but wonder what influence her family has had in creating such a demanding child. The others such as Georgie (?) the peacemaker was kind towards her but she and the others finally had their fill of Charday's manipulative ways. Sherry is obviously very bright, very sensitive, considerate of others and mature....but she is still a child. So she is out of sync with many of the others especially Sharday. Too bad she left but the emotional and over stimulating chaos proved to be too much for her. There are a few others who are resilient and can cope with it all but it is a stressful environment for them all.
