All of these TV specials were just to groom Diana Ross for her solo career. On an artistic note, i can’t imagine being a black kid in the 60s and watching this. I’d be so proud and happy to see something like this.
This ENTIRE SHOW needs to be remastered digitally and add all the extras, rehearsals, etc. and all that footage that didn't make it on the air, and put them on a nice DVD package =)
Please you don't have a right to do that and you shouldn't either because no one is hating on her trying to attack people over her I love Diana and her music but y'all get away with a lot trying to take on people over a woman who you're just a fan of and you don't know her from a can of peas. Everyone is free to their own opinion the only hating ones is you guys y'all have a very negative energy over Diana and you're very obsessed with her that's why y'all are toxic "Stan's".
Yes, this IS why Diane is DIANA ROSS! This was advertised as a special of The Supremes and The Temptations. People tuned in to see see two popular GROUPS. What did we get? A Diane Ross show with special guests. Berry Gordy used the popularity of the two groups to promote Diane who was being prepared for a break from the group in order to pursue a solo career. Diane had a successful solo career because of Berry Gordy's promotion of her talent by showcasing her abilities and giving her the best material, songs, and career opportunities. Diane had enough talent to carry it off; but, the reason Diane is DIANA ROSS is because Berry Gordy pushed her down our throats with all the muscle of Motown that he could muster. Fans of The Supremes and Temptations were, once again, disappointed by this special when it aired because we were expecting to see two groups, not a Diane Ross show. Berry Gordy was in love with Diane Ross...........America was in love with The Supremes and Temptations. This special was criticized when it aired in 1969 because of her preferential treatment. The methods used to promote Diane as a solo act were very controversial at the time. Everyone was talking about it! Diane is DIANA ROSS because of Berry Gordy................period!!!!!!!!!!!!!
50 years ago! What an amazing spectacular. The costumes are fabulous. About time these specials were made available on DVD. The Elvis 68 comeback has been restored, why not these Motown Specials?
PURE CLASS AND ELEGANCE with TRUE TALENT!!!!!!!!! This whole special (plus EVERY BIT OF FOOTAGE of rehearsals and unaired segments) of this SPECTACULAR show AND T.C.B. both!!!! need to be packaged in a deluxe remastered sound and image DVD set!
Actually I did wear out my LP, I played it so much. As a matter of fact, I still have that thing. I got the lp before I even saw the show which was not until the late 90s when someone made me a copy of it on VHS. So all I could do was imagine what was actually taking place while listening to the lp.
Raymond Lock This special was aired on NBC back in 1969, and it aired only once, and it will never reran it again. After the special aired, Motown released a TV soundtrack with musical highlights from this special, and it was called "On Broadway" instead of "GIT on Broadway". This special features songs from hit Broadway musicals like "South Pacific", "Fiddler on the Roof", and many more. The soundtrack is way better than this TV special, but I still have the soundtrack.
As soon as I started playing this, this feeling of euphoria came over me. I mean maybe Euphoria is a bit over-the-top, but I can't explain it really. And with all that's going on in the world right now all the craziness this is a wonderful distraction and I'm going to look for more videos like this. Anyway, it really brought back some wonderful memories. Wow!
I'm glad I found this on YT. I like the album very much and I always wondered what would be happening on screen. And now I know! Thank you Scott! Long, long ago the Supremes had a concert in my hometown Amsterdam in the Netherlands. I did n't know at that time who they were and found that out later. But than I never left them out of my sight. Terrific performers! And so are the Temptations!
Probably the nicest and best sung segment is The Student Mountie at 31:09 where they all are exceptional and for once we actually get to hear the excellent solo voices of Cindy Birdsong and Mary Wilson who as always was heart-stopingly beautiful. Overall it seems a ridiculous miscasting of these 2 iconic incomparable singing groups but to their credit they made the absolute most out of it. If you are an inveterate fan of Motown, the Tempts, and fabulous Supremes this is a great find.
T.C. B. WAS MY wear out album; then came Farewell @ Frontier ! Had a friend who had this album!! Been listening to Diana Ross and Motown since 1965!! Thank you Berry Gordy Jr. Great upload!!!!
The G.I.T. On Broadway Show wasn't as well produced as the "T.C.B." one (in other words, it had a lot of filler) but it had its moments! However, the opening number, "The Rhythm of Life", the "Leading Lady" and "Fiddler on the Roof" medleys (featuring "If I Were A Rich Man") and the "Let the Sunshine In"/"Funky Broadway"/G.I.T. On Broadway closing medley are well worth the price of admission! On the closing number, Diana and company show they can really "get down!" {And I love the skit where the Big Hollywood producer says he only wants Mary and Cindy - and not Diana! It was a great take on the fact that Diana would soon leave Mary and Cindy behind and Berry would put his money behind Diana and not the Supremes, however, it could have been better edited!
GIT had some nice moments, but I think TCB was the superior special. By the way, did anyone else think the dead space in the GIT opening number was odd? I'm talking about the moment when they all moved forward off camera leaving the set bare.
I believe that's because this is an original copy of the show before the Timex Sponsorship tags were added. It would appear that's the space where you would hear the announcement "The Supremes and Temptations- G.I.T. On Broadway. Sponsored by Timex". I'm certain it was added to the special that eventually aired on TV.
@@robertspiegel9215 I got the impression that this was a pre-airing version. I didn't see the original, but Ma bought the album, and I grew up on that. I still have it. I know every note. The biggest surprise to me was things from the album which were not in this video and vice versa. Some things were obviously cut or condensed, but some things the blocking and timing don't allow for. (The Supremes singing Three Little Maids was not cut from this video; it wasn't recorded here. Same with Shame On You, Broadway, as examples).
I AGREE IT SHOULD BE EDITED AND MADE INTO A DVD! MAYBE FOOTAGE IS IN THE MOTOWN FAULT I DONT KNOW BUT THE SALES ALONE WILL BE A BEAUTIFUL CONTRIBUTON FOR THE TEMPTATIONS ESPECIALLY THIER CHILDREN AND GRANCHILDREN!! SO MUCH FOOTAGE HAS BEEN DELETED IN QUITE A FEW OF THERE LIVE PERFORMANCES. WHY I DO NOT KNOW BUT WATCHING DIANE IS TAKING AWAY REAL NATURAL TALENT . MAYBE ONE DAY WE CAN GET THE CHANCE TO VIEW THE REAL TRAIBLAZERS FOR WHAT THEY GAVE TO MOTOWN. WHY PICK AND CHOOSE ? WAS RISING TO THE TOP THAT IMPORTANT? TAKE OUT SCENES THAT WILL MAKE THE AUDIENCE STOP LOOKING AT DIANE BECAUSE THE OTHER PERFORMANCE ARE MORE MESMORIZING ,MUCH MORE THEN HERS SO DELETE THE ACTS !!! WOW THAT IS BRUTEL. YES DIANE HAS TALENT BUT THE EXPRESSIONS I SEE IN THE TCB VIDEO AND THIS VIDEO IT IS JUST PLAIN UNFAIR ! THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL PROFESSIONAL AND RESPECT ON THE COUNT OF THE TEMPTATIONS , MARY WILSON AND FLOWERING FLO BEFORE SHE LEFT. WHO EVER WENT TO THE MOTOWN MUSEUM ? HOW MANY TRIBUTES AND PICTURE OF FLOWERING FLO , EDDIE" DECEMBER DIAMOND" KENDRICK OR MR. FASCINATING DAVID RUFFIN, JUST TO NAME A FEW! THEY SHOULD HAVE A WHOLE FLOOR DEDICATED TO MR. PAUL 'SILKY SMOOTH" WILLIAMS . UNFAIR SORRY! LOVE AND PRAYERS TO NEDRA RUFFIN . MR.DAVID FASCINATING RUFFIN. HIS TWIN AND DAUGHTER
The other lady that Diana introduced was Cindy Birdsong, who replaced original, founding member, Florence Ballard when she was removed from the group in 1967. Flo is the former member that died in 1976 at the age of 32. It was so sad...
Everything is lip synched-poor song selections. Ross and Cindy are the worst! Production and writing makes no sense nor the laugh track. They all come across as a bad laugh In episode.
