1968, Vietnam war, riots, civil rights, women's rights, hippies, LSD..... and the list goes on and on. But out of all the suffering, deaths and calamity came one unforgettable night on TV, 2 groups (and many in the orchestra) of the most incredible vocal artists in the world.... legendary "Diana Ross & the Supremes" & the "Temptations". I cried when a dear friend of mine bought me the vinyl recording of the whole concert.... and guess what? I still have that album!
I was about to share also the Murder of DR.MARTIN LUTHER KING JR r.i.p.But the Tyliek Show beat me to it.But the Tyliek Show Comment and Miss Luisa Cadet Comments should be switched around, because it appears as if Miss Luisa is commenting She was also was murdered that year.Love&Peace😎😁 luv ya byo eJ
The name may be Diana Ross and The Supremes but I can't take my eyes off Mary Wilson. She was the beauty of the group. And she had a class with her dancing and moves. Mary all the way.
Remembered this as a child in 1969 and sought this out. As great as I remembered it all. Diana may have been a diva but no one can deny her talent and that of the Supremes and Temptations. Miss them all. They captured the time and talent of days gone by, historical and groundbreaking. May their achievements and talent never be forgotten.
Paul Williams... I don't care who you are or where you been that man had so much S-O-U-L he could have wrote the book. Nobody could do "For Once" like that. Thanks for posting this.
Bob Mackie really out did himself in designing those beautiful gold lame gowns with the "butterfly wing" sleeves during "I Hear a Symphony." Mary is rockin' that blonde wig in this segment!!
Shocking fantastic. A feast for all the senses. This was the Golden Era of Soul Music. We'll never witness something like this again. THANK YOU VERY MUCH God bless you all.
I remember this! Somebody in my family bought the LP for this program when I was like four or five years old. We still have it somewhere in the attic of our parents' house who are now deceased. We just have to find it. I sure remember the NBC peacock at the very beginning of the program.
My Mom had this album when i was growing up: 'The Temptations meet the Supremes'. This is 1968, interesting to see Diana's African dance performance. Getting away from the glitz and glamour and I think making a statement? Not sure, but i love this all around. Motown magic!
What a treasure! Motown is everything! The Supremes gowns are wonderful! Diana's afro dance is very interesting for the time. She nailed all of it, she is a real entertainment woman, not just a singer. Thanks for sharing this
SHOW THEM WHO WAS....IS....AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE ONE AND ONLY ORIGINAL DIVA.........MISS DIANA ROSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What an iconic moment in entertainment! It was the "Motown 25" of its era. Everyone in school that next day buzzed about it endlessly! Where is it the DVD?!?! Who steals the show? That's a hard one....but the edge goes to the late Paul Williams' riveting "For Once in My Life"!!!!
This is the Supremes at their finest. Before the bickering, before the fans knew there was trouble. I choose to remember this part of them, before people felt they had to choose sides.
The public is not always stupid. We suspected there were problems when Flo left. And it was obvious during this special that Gordy was grooming Ross to make trouble. In fact Mary states in her book that morale on the rehearsal set for this special quickly took a downward spiral as the Temptations as well as Cindy and Mary realized that this was going to be the Diana Ross show. Two Temptations and Supremes numbers were deleted from the show to make way for Ross's attempt at dancing and trying to be Barbara Streisand with her solo show tunes. And how dare they make Mary and Cindy stand off camera to back up Diana on There's a Place for Us. How Mary put up with this is beyond comprehension.
I loved this special from the moment it aired on tv. I was 11 when it aired. This is when I noticed Mary Wilson. She looked like a black Barbie doll. Kelly Rowland could do the Mary Wilson story.
This was one of the few times Dennis sang My Girl, after this he wouldn't sing it because he had so much respect for David Ruffin he felt the song was Ruffin's.
I can see that, especially because it was kind of written for David Ruffin's voice, whereas Dennis has a gruffer voice, but it still works. What I like about the Temptations was that everyone could lead a song, most groups only have one
THIS SHOW WAS GREAT !!! THE GUYS IN THEIR WONDERFUL OUTFITS, THE LADIES IN THEIR BEAUTIFUL CREATIONS JUST MAGNIFICENT !!!!!! ALSO THE MUSIC. AND DANCE WAS JUST FABULOUS !!!!! THIS WAS JUST A GREAT PROGRAM I WOULD LOVE , LOVE LOVE TO SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS AGAIN !! THESE ARE 2 OF MY MOST FAVORITE GROUPS AND TO HAVE THEM BOTH ON THE SAME SHOW WAS JUST TOO MUCH! THANK YOU !
I just discovered today, 29 September 2017, that Diana Ross and I attended high school together. CASS TECHNICAL high school in Detroit. She was graduated in January 1962, and I was graduated six months later. I have no memory of her, of course, since I was a geek and nerd before those terms came into use. You learn something new every day :)
The very last of the makings of Hollywood music stars. Nothing has been done on the caliber since. Not only did they sing rock and roll, pop, Broadway, movie themes, Diana Ross and The Supremes sung the American songbook. First Class Glamour Girl Stars. Berry Gordy changed Black music forever. This show along paved the way for the music class we have now. Class as in student not elegance.
31:59 is Diana's all time pose. also love how she keeps up with the Tempts at 9:10-14 on The Way You Do The Things You Do. In fact they are all getting down. Diana's gown alone weights 35lbs also she is dancing in heels.(So Eat Your heart out Lady Ga Ga lol. ) Pretty impressive considering she weight only about 103lbs herself! Diana was small back in 1968. we All were, I was only 12yrs old myself when I watched this on a Sunday night on a Black and White Television. Those were the days lol!
Anyone else notice that in the very beginning, as The Supremes are entering on to the stage, that Diana's hair style is different from what she's sporting in the close-up...........? And Mary really gets into 'You Keep Me Hangin' On'.........
Diana ross the supremes and the temptations two groups we gotta continue the love we all have for these singing groups one question what is the motown sound let's let it live on right on brother
Plus jamais il n'existera de show aussi époustouflant. Diana Ross and the Supremes restent inégalables. Sans oublier the Temptations. Merci Thomas Page. Je possède tous les Diana ross & the Supremes, et 80% de la production Tamla Motown.
AWESOME! Two class acts together! Tom, you did an incredibly job mixing in the stereo soundtrack. If only someday we get to see this show restored and remastered in DVD or better on Blu-ray.
Brought to you by NBC in Living Color. Wow.. Check out the color spectrum in the peacock's feather. It was a big deal to have a color TV back during that period in time.
I remember this as a shortie. Those 2 groups set the standard then ,and it still stands the test of time now .I haven't seen this since it aired back then this live show , shows the absolute mastery these 2 stupendously outstanding groups. Thanks for posting this , it's definitely a jewel.!!!!
Her voice was grating. Like nails on a chalkboard. Flo & Mary had a much better voice. Slept her way to the top ... Zero respect for her or how she destroyed careers of Mary, Florence, and Cindy.
This is fantastic! I love hearing all of them again, and all these songs! It brings me back to watching tv on Sunday nights in the 1960s with my extended family. Beautiful!
I Have Loved This Album Since The Very 1st Time I Heard it Way Back in 1971 When I Was 15 X It Still Makes The Hairs on The Back Off My Neck Tingle & I Love Every Song on This Album X It is Now Dedicated 2 The Man I Want 2 Marry & Spend The Rest of My Life With X 💘
Why is it that some people have to have a dig at Diana she made that group and look now Diana still going and touring at 74 carry on Diana and the temptation were great
King of RU-vid Yes! I thought I was the only one who noticed that, so true. I watched this interview that Diana did with Barbara Walters in 1978 and I can tell Michael picked up alot of her sayings, certain words he repetitively used like "wonderful" to describe something he liked, "very much" at the end of something he was passionate about, "incredible", he would always use the word "difficult" instead of just saying hard. They shared similar values in life for family and children. I think he studied her to a "T". It's like in some strange way they were sharing one spirit, soul mates perhaps.
This is an unusual event in 1968...an hour TV variety show with only black people. In 1983 Motown was told that they had to have white artist on the Motown 25 anniversary show or it will not be aired.
This was Style! I am a HUGE Supremes fan and really get off on their production values and styling. Not so crazy about all the albums following Reflections but love, love, LOVE the live singing.
💐💐💐I REMEMBER THIS SHOW WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL. OUR PARENTS🥀🥀 ,WHEN THEY WERE ALIVE, USE TO HAVE ME AND MY BROTHERS LOOK AT A LOT OF TV📺SHOWS WHEN WE WERE LITTLE. 💐💐💐
Gm edagdwg thank you for sharing RU-vid never seen this before so much fun no fighting bad words just love Diana was singing about Berry and her relationship Linda j ☮️ this was when they know
From what I understand there was plenty of animosity behind the scenes with the way DR was featured to the detriment of the others. BG insisted Diana be referred to at "Miss Ross" by everyone, including the Temptations, who had known her since she was a kid!! No wonder Flo drank.
I am reading Diana Ross's bio, her neighbours were Smokey Robinson and the Temptations when the Primettes were starting out. They practiced with the Temptations. She got Robinson to give her group a tryout at Motown with Gordy.
TODAY 2017 because her undivided dedication to the preservation of the historical path of the still # 1 FEMALE GROUP of all times THE SUPREMES and as 1 of 3 ORIGINAL FOUNDING MEMBERS of the group MS MARY WILSON is loved and revered as their LIVING LEGACY!
Thanks a lot for sharing this Thomas. You did it very well, mixing in the sounds from the album. Of course to todays standards the show is old fashioned now. But at the time it was great!! We then didn't have a TV so I had to watch at neighbours. LOL
