GitHub Desktop is a user-friendly application that allows you to interact with GitHub repositories without using the command line. Here’s how to get started with GitHub Desktop:
Step 1: Download and Install GitHub Desktop
Go to the GitHub Desktop website.
Click on the "Download for Windows" (or Mac) button.
Once the download is complete, run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to install GitHub Desktop.
Step 2: Sign In to GitHub Desktop
Open GitHub Desktop after the installation is complete.
You will be prompted to sign in to your GitHub account. Click on "Sign in to GitHub.com".
Enter your GitHub username/email and password, then click "Sign in".
Step 3: Configure Git
After signing in, you may need to configure Git by entering your name and email address. This information will be associated with your commits.
Enter your name and email address and click "Continue".
Step 4: Clone a Repository
To work on a repository, you need to clone it to your local machine. Click on "File" in the top menu, then select "Clone repository".
You can choose to clone a repository from GitHub.com or enter a URL to clone a repository from another source.
Select the repository you want to clone and choose a local path to save it. Click "Clone".
Step 5: Create a New Repository
If you want to create a new repository, click on "File" in the top menu and select "New repository".
Enter the repository name, description (optional), and local path where you want to save it.
Click "Create repository".
Step 6: Making Changes and Committing
Navigate to your cloned repository in GitHub Desktop.
Make changes to your files using your preferred code editor or IDE.
GitHub Desktop will automatically detect the changes. You will see them listed under the "Changes" tab.
Add a summary and description for your changes in the "Summary" and "Description" fields.
Click "Commit to main" (or the current branch name) to commit your changes.
Step 7: Pushing Changes to GitHub
After committing your changes, you need to push them to GitHub. Click on the "Push origin" button in the top-right corner.
Your changes will be pushed to the remote repository on GitHub.
Step 8: Pulling Changes from GitHub
To update your local repository with the latest changes from GitHub, click on the "Fetch origin" button.
If there are any new commits, click "Pull origin" to merge them into your local repository.
Step 9: Creating and Switching Branches
To create a new branch, click on the "Current Branch" dropdown in the top middle.
Click "New Branch", enter a name for your branch, and click "Create Branch".
To switch between branches, select the desired branch from the "Current Branch" dropdown.
Additional Tips:
Merge Conflicts: If you encounter merge conflicts, GitHub Desktop will guide you through resolving them.
Syncing: Regularly fetch and pull from the origin to keep your local repository in sync with the remote.
Learning Resources: GitHub Desktop has built-in guides and documentation to help you learn more about using the application.
