One night, in the year 1713, I dreamed that I had made a pact with the devil in exchange for my soul. Everything turned out as I wanted: my new servant anticipated all my wishes. Among other things, I gave him my violin to see if he could play. How great was my astonishment at hearing a sonata so marvelous and so beautiful, performed with so much art and intelligence, such as I had never thought of in my wildest dreams! I felt ecstatic, transported, enchanted: my breathing failed, and I woke up. I immediately took up my violin in order to retain, at least a part, the impression of my dream. In vain! The music that I composed at that time is undoubtedly the best I have ever written, and I still call it the Devil's Trill, but the difference between it and that which moved me is so great that I would have destroyed my instrument and said goodbye to the music. music forever if I had to live without the enjoyment it offers me.
