Giussepe Arcimboldo is really a single artist, even his painting being from the 16th century they still make feel unconfortable somehow, the sensation is similar with the Modern and Contemporary art wich take me off from the confort zone. I didn't know this artist! The quality of the video is awesome as always!

Maybe it's the even different style, especially concerning the librarian. This guy totally falls out of his time in my eyes. Reminds me a lot of modern painters. Or maybe thinking back to my childhood: reminds me a bit of the German illustrator Annegert Fuchshuber, who made lot of paintings for German Kids picture books (without scientific evidence, only in my brain 😅). Like it very much...many greetings from Germany 😊

Little addendum: this is true for many mannerist painters...Just have a look at El Greco for example...His style is not very typical for his period. I have to thank you for this nice little trip back to renaissance.

When I chose this profile picture, I didn't know the context behind it. I just thought it was nice since it matches my name and it reminded me of that one character from The Tale of Desperaeux. Arcimboldo's work has long been a curiosity to me. His paintings which use elements of nature to portray individuals, seem almost like something the Surrealists might have come up with, yet he was a 16th century painter. I would love to have had a conversation with him. :)

I wonder if Arcimboldo would have been more of a Magritte-type, some kind of philosopher, or a Dali-type, completely wacky off-the-rails character. I don't know why, but I like to imagine him as the latter. :)

Had an elementary school teacher who taught us about this guy. She took a bunch of magazines, cut out all the food pictures she could find and had us make self-portrait collages using the pictures. Completely forgot about this dude until now.

Very great video! I remember seeing Arcimboldo's paintings before, but always thinking of them as more contemporary. It wasn't until I was in a drawing class in college that I found out they were waaaay ahead of their time.

I love how we could (as I did at first) confuse these 16th century portraits with contemporary art. I feel like it adds so much interest to Arcimboldo's body of work. Being some 500 years ahead of your time is no small achievement.

I always thought this guy made his paintings in the abstract era and now that I know it was literally like five hundred+ years ago I'm just like... Oh. Some people were really ahead of their time. Like REALLY ahead of their time.

Thank you so much! Rudolf II is quite controversial. He's often blamed for the disastrous 30 years war which, coincidentally, is the reason why so much of Arcimboldo's art is now in Sweden. Vertumnus, for example, is in Skokloster Castle. I think I fixed the Instagram link btw, thank you for letting me know!
