Vintage diesels in Western Maryland livery, including BL2 #82, pull a mixed photo freight (featuring an original Western Maryland coach) on May 16-17, 2008, as part of the annual Cass Railfan Weekend sponsored by the Mountain State Railroad and Logging Historical Association.
The diesels are operated by the Durbin & Geenbrier Valley railroad in Belington, and normally run on former Western Maryland trackage in and around Elkins, West Virginia. This year, the two diesels also put in an appearance on Saturday, May 17, at the lost town of Spruce and participated in afternoon runbys along the Upper Shavers line at Twin Bridges and Milepost 83 that afternoon before returning to Elkins.

The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley railroad has three F units, 2 A's and a B, all in WM speed lettering. That's who provided the diesel power for the Cass Railfan Weekend the last several years.

As a railnut/railroader with old style tastes, this was refreshing to see and hear. It's hard for me to get enthused by locomotives from 1998 on up era.

avand18: You said that the track was badly degraded between Spruce & Webster. The Shays were made for lousy track. Even if it was as bad as the Maumee & Western shortline a Shay would have no trouble. I thought the motivation of re-laying the line to Spruce was to re-gain a main-line connection for deliveries of fuel, or anything else that was not able to be trucked in

The bl diesel horn sounds just like the one on the Nebraska zephyr! I just wish I could remember what type of horn that was!

whats a real shame,,,,, the WM had the last intact F unit fleet. WM took good care of the locos. the last ran in late 1979. yet 1 was donated to the BO museum and the rest scrapped. BTW, i saw and photoed 7181,7182 way back when.(also many of the 7100s too)

Its not even an F-7, but a slightly longer FP-7, so in short its not WM, its ex CN i belive

By train, you pretty much can't go south of the title shot anymore. From Spruce to Webster Springs, the track is extremely degraded and/or impassible in some sections.
