"I am grateful for the opportunity to share some remarks at this one hundreth anniversary of Brigham Young University’s Education Week.
The first Leadership Week was held for a few days beginning on January 23, 1922. Looking at 1922, two other events have caught my personal attention.
The year 1922 was the first time the Church used the relatively new radio technology as a means of communication. The second event was the commencement of Aggie ice cream. I realize that Aggie ice cream is a little frivolous, particularly at BYU, but having grown up in Cache Valley, it also has caught my attention.
Coming back to Education Week, the stated purpose then was to provide spiritual as well as academic stimulation and training to leaders, particularly in Church leadership lines. Over the years the trend moved toward classes to enhance knowledge and continue education. These special classes relate to the regular classes taught at BYU.
This event has continued to progress, evolve, and improve over the years. It blesses the lives of many people. Since 2008, Education Week has been the responsibility of the Brigham Young University Division of Continuing Education.
I appreciate the fact that from the beginning the purpose was to provide spiritual as well as academic information. To use a little different phraseology, the effort has always been to increase knowledge and build faith in Jesus Christ.
In the doctrines of the Church, faith and the quest for knowledge are not inconsistent; they are compatible and complementary.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its members have a doctrinal commitment to education. President Russell M. Nelson recently said, “I consider [education] a religious responsibility.”1 Some pursue education formally, and studies indicate that a high percentage of active Latter-day Saints has completed four or more years of college. That is among the highest percentages of all religions. In addition, members of the Church “with college experience have [Church] attendance rates notably higher than any other group.”2 Others pursue informal, continuing education such as that you will experience this week. I commend each of you for attending today to learn and to strengthen your faith. An omniscient God honors your efforts.
Latter-day Saint doctrine is unique and unequivocal about the role of intelligence and the importance of education and knowledge. In section 93 of our Doctrine and Covenants, we are taught:
1. Truth is independent-it “is knowledge of things as they are, and as they were, and as they are to come.”3
2. “The glory of God is intelligence, or, in other words, light and truth.”4
3. Exercising our agency to receive “truth and light”5 is essential.
In the quest for both faith and knowledge, we also need to maintain humility.
Faith and knowledge both require effort and commitment. We cannot expect to have faith at the center of our lives if all our efforts are expended on knowledge, sports, hobbies, making money, or other pursuits.
I love and have often used the story Elder LeGrand Richards, then of the Quorum of the Twelve, used to tell of a man living in the United States who sold rabbit pies. He had a significant business and produced a large number of pies. At some point people became suspicious that the pies included horsemeat. A charge was made that he was engaged in false advertising. He initially denied that the pies contained horsemeat but upon questioning admitted that, yes, there was a little horsemeat. Upon further interrogation, he finally acknowledged that the pies were half horse and half rabbit. When asked what he meant by half horse and half rabbit, he said one horse and one rabbit.
Some of us want faith to be at the center of our lives, but it does not get our attention-it is the rabbit portion of the pie.
My purpose today is to examine certain knowledge through the lens of revealed doctrine. My emphasis will be on doctrine and initiatives that have been provided by some of the presidents of the Church over the last one-hundred-year period. The doctrine I have chosen is significant in that it provides an immunity to protect against specific challenges and evils not only for the times in which revelations were received but also to protect future generations. These teachings provide an immunity for future events that could have serious adverse impact on members. Interestingly, the Book of Mormon also fits this description; written anciently, it provides immunity for our day."

I was a drinker for most of my young life. When I joined the church, I stopped drinking, but my health was already damaged. As I started living the word of wisdom my body began to heal slowly but surely. I am now enjoying the best years of my life health wise. Follow the Prophet!

Met Elder Cook in person. We had a brief conversation and he gave me a hug. I'll forever cherish that experience with an Apostle of the Lord.

All the teachings that were given are as needed today as when they were given. "We thank Thee O God for a prophet, to guide us in these latter days." These men were and are prophets for all the earth. We should listen to their words because they are they words of our Lord to all of us.

VERY well-done outline of what some of our great prophets have presented us with. It's all from the Lord's love for us, and His desire to show us how to return to Him (if we choose). We NEED all doctrine from THEN and NOW as it is scripture/prophecy. When I listen to their voices, it feels like they're crying from the dust ❤🕊

I wholeheartedly sustain the prophet and his leaders. Most important thing that was said in this talk is the very end when he asked us that if we sustain the Prophet then we can confidently kneel down and ask God About what the prophet is declaring. We can then get an answer from God. Sometimes these answers can be surprising. God is first

Elder Cook was in the Stake presidency when I and later my sister joined the church , we were teenage girls who came from a train wreck of a home but found truth and love in the Gospel of Jesus Christ in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When I joined he was a councilor to his Brother Joseph who was then the stake president. Later Elder Cook became our stake President . I am always so grateful for the opportunity to have met with them for temple interviews , Stake conferences and other occasions. When now Elder Cook was sustained as an apostle my sister and O were thrilled, he is so personable and kind . Though he probably would remember me, I will never forget he and his dear wife and the Christlike example he and his brother set as Stake Presidents. I sustained him then as a teenager and now a woman in her 60’s . Thank you Elder Cook for you and your families many years of faithful service.

As someone who was inactive from church for over 20 years and did not follow the word of wisdom and made many poor decisions potentially fatal decisions among other things, I’m truly amazed there is not more emphasis on abstaining from drugs and alcohol from religion in general. I have a STRONG testimony the word of wisdom as well as the gospel and our prophets. I know Jesus Christ is our Savior, Redeemer, Mediator and Rock and that Heavenly Father has a plan for us far grander than anything we can imagine!

The Lord shows us the way, we need to listen to Him, the world can pull us away, we need to heed them not…,and the prophet shows us the way again….only with added help to make us stronger, wiser and better, and deal with the questions we have. Above all….the Lord loves us, He does not want us to fear, but to repent and come unto Him. As we listen to the prophet and apostles “as they specifically speak” to us, we will remember, renew and understand the standards and values better, and how they can bless our lives. The world will try to pull us away. But the Lord will help us to find pure love and comfort through His Word and in prayer. We will feel and remember our values!! Always stay true, even when trying to help. Sometimes you have to draw boundaries, and say no to some ways of heloing. There are others who the Lord provides to help. May we see and feel the love of the Lord through his chosen servants….and if others do not come with in some of the counsel, even in your family, you are not alone, you are a family by yourself, and you have family beyond the veil who is also pulling for you!! You can help to be an example to the stubborn ones.

I have met people who had many degrees and could speak many different languages, Yet not members Yet, too busy to have faith or go to church, and not having children or yet, plans not to get into argument with one another because families came from different churches I felt so very sad for them, for our family members enjoy talking about things that bond with others and what growth is going on in our church and just how we welcome others to come and learn, teach, and live among us. I always have wanted to help all churches in foods items for children, and elderly. ,

I appreciate Elder Cooks remarks, however, I did notice the absence of any remarks concerning Ezra Taft Benson and the Book of Mormon. Considering that it was written for our day, maybe he didn't feel the need to remind us because it's a given.

Boy, do I believe that about families. Even siblings have responsibilities to each other. I know that if you cannot spend quality time, work and serve, and cooperate together, and at least have a short devotional and share something with each other once a week, you should NOT live in the same house. Because it could mean the difference between success and failure. I have seen it, I have experienced it both ways…you either swim or sink. Treading water is very hard to do!! And you need to have everyone’s cooperation to make it work. One weak link can break the. chain. It does not have to be a lot for each person, for with everyone’s help, the load becomes lighter. But you have most of the time for your own pursuits, such as work and school, plus hobbies and diversion when you are single. Only when parents, children and large families and provident living are involved, I suppose it takes more. But I see those families having a very good time, and each one does their part, so it’s not too much.

I love the Prophet and Apostles. However, some of them have different bearings as servants of God. Elder Cook is like one of those loving Uncles who when you are working on a job like yard work or a building project. You take extra care to to take note of everything and try not to make to many mistakes. 🙂

Yes, read the letter, and see how some have left the church by harboring those same questions and not seeking answers from the Lord - the light of all education.
