Hey guys! I'm getting a few questions regarding where my "base number" came from... Everyone is different, so I can't give you an exact starting base number. It's honestly very personal because some people aren't trying to make a living from their art so they don't mind selling it cheaper, whereas other's value their artwork a lot more, and will want to start with a high base number - it's totally up to you and what you feel comfortable charging! If you ask yourself the questions; "Will I feel sad/regret selling my artwork at this price and wish I kept it?" or "Will I feel guilty for charging someone this much for my artwork?" Sometimes that can help you make a decision on what to charge! You obviously don't want to be selling it so cheap that you regret selling it, but you also don't want to feel like you're "ripping off" the customer either 😊 It's always better to start on the lower end, then you can increase your prices if you are selling your artwork on a regular basis (rather than feeling like you need to decrease your prices) I hope that helps!

This video was very useful, but I still have a question. Art galleries usually take a percentage of the selling price as their commission. Does the final price calculated using your base number system include the gallery percentage? Thanks in advance for your response.

Thank you for this Rebecca, and for your advice. I appreciate a lot! I have problems putting a price on my work, because I am a beginner, I'm taking time, and I live in a Country that does not support Artists. And that's why I have to think carefully about putting a price on my work. And honestly, it frustrates me a lot, because they can't buy me an artwork, that doesn't cost $180... but less. I'm very sad about this.🥺

Thank you so much Rebecca for this very useful tutorial! I believe that sooner or later this question is asked by all those who wish to sell their art. Have you ever thought about making a tutorial that explains the steps to take to sell your drawings? I would like to try but I don't know where to start .. How to make yourself known? Thank you so much for sharing your outstanding qualities with all of us ♥️

I'm glad it was helpful! I honestly wasn't that great at marketing my artwork to sell (it was mainly by word of mouth) because I was more interested in learning how to create tutorials and teach people how to create the artwork So I'm probably not the best person to ask for information on how to sell your artwork - maybe try messaging other artists who you admire (people who make a living off selling their work) Hope that makes sense, sorry I couldn't be more helpful 😊

Yes, I find this difficult. I’ve sold 3 pieces of my art work so far, non commissions and only to friends. I still think I sold them cheaply. First one was a bit bigger than an A4 size. I did a portrait of my male friend for fun using oil paint but the dry brush technique. He wanted to buy it, sold it for £65 😏 another piece was a pastel painting of a puffin on a rock (it was a tutorial Colin Bradley)on pastel mat (the middle size pad) sold it for £80 and my last one was a colour pencil drawing of a peacock, size 4” by 5.5” and I spray varnished it. Sold it for £30. Mmmmm hard. Maybe I should sell them for more but have to be careful not to over price as only sold 3 for now. I’ve gifted two pet portraits too. Some pictures are easier to paint then others, I guess that’s down to experience. Like you said, the more you paint the more quicker you get. I love your Facebook group, I need to post a new painting on it. 😊

I'm glad it was helpful for you! Yes, it's confusing and very personal how much you charge for your work, but hopefully it gets easier! 😊

I agree this is difficult. I quoted a friend a low price on an acrylic piece. He said it was worth a lot more, and gave me more than I asked for. Now depending on the level of detail, I am pricing .between .50 to 1.00 per square inch. Still may be too low, but it gives me a starting point and the pricing gives me a fair markup, I feel.

Is there a baseline for beginner artist? In order to gain more exposure to selling art, newbies may need to start at some point. But people may be doubtful about the reputation even you put in hours of making it.

My paintings are abstract acrylics, and far less detailed. I have found that 50 cents per square inch gives me a good starting point. So a 10x12 would be 120 square inches, x50 cents gives me a rough price of $60. I don’t paint for the money, and in this example my cost would be less then $10, so I feel $60 is fair. If I become more accomplished, I may raise prices.

Im confused where the baseline price comes from? From the hours spent??
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt 3 года назад
It's basically a number that you feel comfortable with 😊 If you watch all the way through, I explain that you should test your equation on a few different sizes of artwork to make sure that you're getting a reasonable hourly rate Everyone is different, so I can't give you an exact starting number. It's honestly very personal because some people aren't trying to make a living from their art so they don't mind selling it cheaper, whereas other's value artwork a lot more and will want to star with a high base number - it's totally up to you and what you feel comfortable charging!

Your drawing is beautiful. Linear inch pricing does not make sense. Square inch pricing does. Examples with your base $10: 8x10"= 18" linear x $10 = $180 but 8x10" = 80 sq in $180/80 sq in = $2.25 per sq in 9x12" = 21" linear x $10 = $210 9X12" = 108 sq in $210/108 sq in = $1.94 per sq in 24x36" = 60" linear x $10 = $600 24x36" = 864sq in $600/864 sq in = $ 0.69 per sq in As the dimensions increase linearly, the square inches increase geometrically. You would be ripping yourself off as pieces get larger. God bless you!
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt
@KirstyRebeccaFineArt Месяц назад
Hi, it is a personal preference! I understand what you are saying, and I would agree but only if I started my smaller artwork at low prices... however, I chose to price my smaller artwork at a higher price that isn't "ripping myself off" so that when I use linear inches, the price increase is not a drastic jump to get to the next size (like it would be for square inches) These are examples below (not my actual prices, but it shows what I am talking about) Linear inches (x + x) * 15 8 x 10 = $270 9 x 12 = $315 11” x 14” = $375 18 x 24” = $630 Average = $397.50 In this example, I feel like the smallest size is a decent starting price, and it’s not a huge jump to the next size. It doesn’t take me that much longer (and I don’t use that much more product) to complete something slightly larger so I want my smaller sizes to be a higher price to make up for that Square inches (x * x) * 1.5 8 x 10 = $120 9 x 12 = $162 11 x 14 = $231 18” x 24” = $648 Average = $290.25 In this example, I feel like my smallest size is too cheap, and my largest size is too expensive in comparison - and the average price is also much lower, even though my largest size is priced higher Again, it’s personal preference… but I would rather have my prices be closer together without a huge jump in between because it more accurately reflects how much time and product I am spending on the smaller sizes. I start my smaller sizes at a higher price because it takes me almost as much time to complete the artwork as the next size up. This also means my average price is higher, which means I am earning more overall I hope that makes sense 😊
