Honestly it is like a tank barrel in more ways than one. It turns the more conventional gun into an attachment for itself, the pistol for this grenade launcher and the machine gun for the tank barrel.

I know this is true for the western 40mm grenades but is it also true for the old soviet 30mm VOG-30 and 25mm GP-25 Kostyor? Given the fact that they're caseless and their deviation from any western convention when it comes to grenade launcher design, i think it's a reasonable question to ask if a minimal arming distance is even a thing with those.

There's a minimum arming distance and just dropping it isn't enough G-Force to trigger the distance fuse. It's fine, just pop it out and throw it at the enemy... Or kick it like a ball so you don't step in it and twist your ankle.. then reload and fire again

@@Boeing_hitsquad The high explosive isn't the main problem in this case. You see, if there was a hangfire, that means that the powder charge hasn't been ignited by the primer-YET. And if you open up the action, the round will most probably fire sooner or later, and that's an out of battery explosion in your hands, and that's no bueno. And if the powder charge goes boom boom, it will most likely cause the high esplosives inside the projetlie to also go big boom boom. In short, the safety doesn't matter in this case, if you have a hangfire you simply wait for the round to go off safely contained inside the chamber.

The explosives literally cannot be detonated unless the grenade is fired through the launcher, as the arming sequence requires: 1) the inertia of the round being fired to withdraw the fuze firing pin from an internal detent. 2) the centrifugal force of the rifling to realign that firing pin with the HE detonator. Once fired, the round arms after about 8' of travel. To detonate, the grenade must strike a sufficiently hard surface to cause more inertially actuated surfaces to align properly and strike the firing pin into the detonator.

Typical tank rounds are around 120-125mm. 160 is really chonky for land-based artillery.

For refrence, the Fletcher class destroyers were armed with 5" (127mm) guns.

Most modern MBTs use 115 - 130mm guns. 102mm is on the low end.

Even in 40k, the 160mm is still larger than the caliber of a Battle Cannon (the weapon mounted on your average Leman Russ Tank), which has only 120mm. So, yeah, even in 40k, a 160mm weapon, especially a handheld one, isn't anything to sneeze at.
