Black Art In America Announces Exclusive Representation and Fall Solo Exhibition for Artist Traci Mims
Black Art in America Gallery (BAIA) is excited to announce exclusive representation and a solo exhibition of works by artist Traci Mims. Mims is a multidisciplinary artist. Her ‘social surrealist’ works often depict monumental figures and stories, occasionally centering herself as a representative of both her community and the everywoman. Using herself as a symbol to convey specific and relevant cultural narratives.
Originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, Mims currently is an Atlanta based artist. A graduate of Florida A&M University (BA) and Tyler School of Art, Temple University (MFA)-Mims is an accomplished artist with showings of her work both regionally and nationally. In 2023 she won the prestigious Atlanta Biennial McCain Award for Printmaking.
On October 6th Black Art In America Gallery will be presenting Give Us the Sun, a solo show featuring works by Traci Mims. This will be the artist’s first solo show in Atlanta and the gallery’s first showing of a single artist at its new location. Faron Manuel, Director of the BAIA Foundation and Curator of the exhibition notes that “anchored by her graphite drawings and printmaking, the show will also feature some of the artist’s paintings and quilt work, in an exploration of her broad versatility as an artist. The through line of the show is truthfully her ability to accentuate the essence of the figure and ability to bring a narrative direction to portraiture.”
Mims’s work was recently introduced to the gallery during an open call for printmakers, leading up to the inaugural Atlanta Fine Art Print Fair presented by Black Art In America. Wherein Traci was a standout and highly successful participating artist at the fair. Speaking about her work the artist states that she “focuses on themes related to Black identity and being a black woman in today’s cultural and political climate. I also like to focus on historical narratives and individuals. My ideas are often expressed in the form of cultural allegory and social realism.” Mims’s broad versatility and subject matter in her work provides BAIA with a unique and exciting opportunity to uplift an individual voice with a solo debut at the gallery this October.
