You know me, I always love to dabble with using traditional painting methods with my digital art, and I've recently starting putting one into practice that has had some GREAT impact on my work (especially the color harmonies): Underpainting!
In this video, we discuss some tips, tricks, and terminology for utilizing underpainting in your work. It's only a few extra steps to add to your process, but the payoff is HUGE!

Awesome! Thank you so much for making this I have been looking for like over an hour trying to find some kind of tutorial on using underpaintings in Rebelle. This was super helpful!

Yeees! Another video, with that most beautiful face!! Thanks for another great tutorial! The importance of underpainting is so undervalued in digital art, so glad that someone brought it up :)

The reason I asked about the luminosity lock is because I like working in value also but when applying a color layer you lose all the shifts in temperature that you would find in natural painting. When you go back in to try and paint the temperature shifts by adjusting the hue you begin to change the value inadvertently making your grayscale painting of less value. However, if I can color pick my value and then change the hues temperature having that value locked becomes immeasurably important. I hope this makes sense. I don’t know why more color wheels don’t have this feature or how people are solving for this. Any insight from you would be great.

In PS… you can change the fill layer to a color adjustment layer and then change the color on the fly.

Love this. Quick question. Art studio pro’s color wheel has a lock for value so for example if I select a mid value yellow and change the color to blue it adjusts where on the value scale the blue is to match the.mid value yellow. You can see this by painting a bunch of different hues and converting them to black and white. This is nice so you know when changing the hue how much to lover the value for a say 10% reduction in value. Do you know what other programs have this lock on the color wheel?

Ohhhh, great question! So a lot of programs call this something like 'Lightness Lock' or 'Luminosity Lock'. I know the Photoshop plug-in Coolorus has this feature, but I'll have to do a deep dive and find out what others may have it.
