I know the giveaway already passed, but I still wanted to share! In high school, I helped a friend struggling with depression and when they told me how much they appreciated my help and how they wouldn't be here without me, it warmed my heart to know that I have the potential to put an impact on someone's life. I'm currently looking into grad programs and I was still stuck on if I should apply for school counseling or clinical mental health counseling programs because I would love to work with both populations, but this video helped me so much, so thank you so much!! :)

Giveaway: I got into it because I always had students asking me for advice and telling me their problems when I was a tutor at a school. A mentor at the time encouraged me to be a school counselor and I just graduated this May! :) Thanks for the video. I am so appreciative of your perspective of MHC and SC in case I want to go back and get a license in MHC.

Can you talk about the ways in which you experienced more burn out in mental health counseling than school counseling?

During the summer of 2018, I started working as a tech at an inpatient psych unit for adolescents. I absolutely loved it & always had it on my mind even when having to quit due to moving states. After pushing aside my fears, I’ve transitioned into preparing for grad school in the fall for Counseling Psychology! Thank you so much for your helpful videos along the way (:

I've been extremely interested in both psychology and counseling since I was in middle school! I knew at that age, I had a very strong passion and love to help people, especially those that have mental health problems. Through my personal experiences of depression and anxiety, I have a lot of empathy for people and understand what it's like to feel alone and have to go through life on your own. I have a huge passion in promoting mental health, destigmatizing it, and helping those in need.

To be quite honest, when I was a lot younger I had no idea what psychotherapy was I just thought that a therapist was someone who asked you how you were feeling. For me, that was enough to know that that was something I wanted to do. I was always curious to see what was going on underneath people's "masks" and wanted to be someone others could confide in. I'm currently getting a masters in Professional Counseling Psychology and I'm learning that there is so much more to psychotherapy than I could've imagined. I love it!

Is your schedule the same as a mental counselor vs school counselor? For example, do you still have summers off as a mental counselor?
@DarrianCorey
@DarrianCorey 8 месяцев назад
Great question! It is very rare to have summers off as a mental health counselor. As for weekly work schedule/hours as a mental health counselor, it entirely depends on your workplace and the average age of your clientele at the practice. For me personally, I prefer to work with children and adolescents. However this often leads to a later work schedule, like holding sessions until 7:00 PM, in order to accommodate afterschool sessions for kids. Then when you add in finishing up notes/documentation, and sometimes having to make additional calls or reports in emergency situations, I could be in my office up to 8/8:30 PM. However in my experience, most companies understand that later hours can make maintaining a good work/life balance difficult, and will only require you to offer late sessions 2-3 days out of the week.

Hi Darrian! I am actually right about to send in my application for the graduate counseling program at UOFA! I’m really battling between choosing the mental health emphasis or school counselor emphasis. Even though you’ve switched into the mental health field, did you face any challenges due to having majority of the internship hours being in a school setting? I’m worried I may also find school counseling to not be my favorite, but I enjoy the option of having versatility for both fields.

Hi Daniel! Congratulations, that's exciting! That's a great question. When I was about to make the switch, I was initially worried about that too. Luckily, I didn't run into any issues. It was often one of the first questions I was asked in interviews once they saw my resume, but as long as you are honest in your explanation of why you are interested in making the switch, everyone I interviewed with was very understanding. In fact, I ran into quite a few interviewers who had initially started in a school setting and had made the switch themselves too. Best of luck!

Im sorry you said you found it harder to do self care as a mental health counselor or as a school counselor
@DarrianCorey
@DarrianCorey 8 месяцев назад
I found it more difficult to practice self-care as a mental health counselor. For me personally, it's mostly due to the later work hours, and a much higher percentage of cases involving trauma. But both types of counseling have their own individual challenges for sure!

What is the reason for being unable to provide mental health counseling to students? If you have your LPC are you able to provide more in-depth counseling to the students?
@DarrianCorey
@DarrianCorey Год назад
Hi Morgan, that's a great question! If I had to guess, I'm thinking maybe from the school's perspective, there is an increased level of liability associated with providing that type of counseling in a school setting vs. in a typical practice. I did not have my mental health counseling license until the very end of my time in the school counseling field, but either way the focus was always brief/solution-focused interventions. Anything further it was typically recommended to refer out to a counselor who could see the client consistently in the long-term. I do think a big reason as well is caseloads! School counselor caseloads tend to be much much larger than a mental health counselor's, in which case things can be more easily missed or it can be tougher to see a student on a weekly basis if needed. Hope that helps!

Is getting off the ground as hard as it seems?
@DarrianCorey
@DarrianCorey 2 года назад
As an LAC working for an agency, not so much - They receive the referrals, handle all the billing, and acquiring clients for you to add to your caseload. As an LPC working independently, I have heard that is a bit more difficult as it involves getting certified to take private insurance, handling all the billing yourself most times, and having to promote yourself/your business in order to build a caseload! However with the LPC, that also comes with more freedom as you don't necessarily have to reach a certain quota for billable hours.

Your video really helped me a lot , I am going through some tough time right now, and trying to get up my feet and providing a better future for me and my son. Which school did you go to completed your Masters degree? I am trying to find a online program that can give me an opportunity to work as a school counselor and maybe later mental health counselor, any suggestions?
@DarrianCorey
@DarrianCorey Год назад
So happy to hear the video helped, and good for you for taking a big step for you and your son! I completed my Master's in Counseling at The University of Arizona, which is also where I did my undergrad - It actually ended up being more of an online program than anticipated due to the pandemic hitting when I was halfway through the program! I don't know of many specific online programs, but I did meet someone during my school counseling practicum who was attending Grand Canyon University online, so that may be one worth looking into! I think one positive that came out of the transition during the pandemic is that online programs seem to be much more widely accepted compared to before, as it's been made pretty clear that telehealth is here to stay. I hope this helps!

Whats the best way to find a job when you are in your undergrad for mental health?
@DarrianCorey
@DarrianCorey 2 года назад
Hi Johnny! As far as finding a psychology-related job, internship, or research assistantship, I always had the best luck with talking to the advisors in the psychology department and/or keeping an eye on the emails that the department would send out to all the psych majors which would usually include available opportunities. However, I did attend a pretty large school, so this may differ if you attend a smaller school and/or school that may not conduct research on campus. If that's the case, asking your professors can always be a great option! It shows your ambition and dedication toward the field, and chances are they have a project or have a colleague that has a project you could be a part of.

Do you have any tips on how to find the right agency to work for?
@DarrianCorey
@DarrianCorey Год назад
That can be a tough one. I would say more often than not, the interview process can give you a pretty good feel for the company, the atmosphere there, etc. Aside from that, reading reviews can be a good tool, as well as talking to current employees if you have the option! A good thing to ask about in interviews or prior to that is their billable hours expectations. I would say around 5-6 hours per day, 5 days a week seems to be about the average. I would also suggest working with agencies who specialize in treating the specific population you are hoping to work with in the future, so you are able to get some good experience ahead of time and determine if that is truly the specialty you want to pursue long-term!

where you able to change careers because you got an LPC?
@DarrianCorey
@DarrianCorey Год назад
Hi Giancarlos - I actually do not have an LPC yet, I do have my LAC though (Only difference is I must be supervised in clinical practice for at least 2 years, vs. being able to practice independently!) What really enabled me to change what branch of counseling I was doing was the Master's program I attended. I was lucky that even the School Counseling students in the program were required to complete mental health clinical hours, and take the basic mental health counseling classes - That is what really made my transition possible!
