Here is how to give a Boston Terrier a bath!
How often should you give your Boston Terrier a bath?
Boston Terriers should be bathed every 4 to 6 weeks. Some dogs can be bathed every week if necessary, and others can go as long as 8 weeks. You’ll need to use your best judgment to decide what frequency works for you and your dog.
If you notice your dog starting to smell or she gets itchy at around eight weeks, then it may be time for a bath. The frequency of your Boston’s baths may also change throughout the year. If your dog spends more time outdoors during certain seasons, she may need more frequent showers.
What Emily and I personally do with Bella
In my household, we bathe Bella once a week. Bathing Bella weekly lasted for several months when Emily was in charge. However, lately, it has been about every four weeks since I have been doing it. The point of me telling you this is Bella did just fine with a weekly bath schedule. I think the weekly schedule not only kept her smelling fabulous but also limited the amount of hair she would shed. We used a Four In One Shampoo. To learn more about that shampoo, check out this article, Shampoo I would Recommend, plus it is pretty cheap.
Be sure to monitor your Boston is you are bathing once per week. Because it’s important to remember that bathing your pup too often can have adverse effects on her skin and coat. Bathing too often can wash away the coats natural oils and irritate the skin. Removing the natural oils can result in dry, itchy skin and a dull, lifeless coat. If you notice any negative changes in your Boston’s skin or coat, you may need to adjust your bathing schedule accordingly.
A Bath Gives You A Chance To Bond & Inspect
Not only will a bath give you the chance to bond with your Boston as well as keep her clean. Regular baths also offer you the opportunity to go over her skin and coat with more attention. Being so hands-on during bathing allows you to check your dog for any redness and irritation or even lumps, bumps, or bug bites.
Regular baths will hopefully allow you to catch skin conditions in their early stages so you can seek treatment before it becomes severe. One of the best ways to check your pooch’s skin and help her enjoy the bathing process is to take your time massaging shampoo or conditioner into her coat. Not only will this let you check every inch of her body for irregularities, but she’ll feel relaxed and refreshed when done.

What a lovely Boston you have. Bella is so patient. My Boston Terrier, Maggie lived for 14 years. I happy to know that we can give a bath to a Boston once every three weeks. Maggie had very dry skin. Too much sun in the summer. I used oatmeal shampoo and that would help with the dry skin situation. Love watching Bella.

Great assistant you have there, congrats!! lol! I have the same setup when giving Bruce a bath, the only difference is that even though he is quiet all the time and doesn't try to get out, he shivers a lot! I don't know if it is because of the noise the water makes or because he doesn't like to bath, the poor guying is always shaking.

Bella is such a sweetheart in the bath and an angel when you cut her nails!!! My Dolly doesn’t really like taking a bath ( she disappears when she sees me preparing for it ) but she s nice and stands still once in it. My big problem is her nails! She doesn t let me cut them !she absolutely hates it ! I hve to go to the vet for that ! I bathe her every three or four weeks. But I’m not sure how often I should hve her nails cut ...(?) Again thank you very much for your interesting videos.

She's so good, Our Boston hates baths, running water and the tub. I thought about trying the sink? Any suggestions?
@BostonTerrierSociety
@BostonTerrierSociety 4 года назад
The sink might work. At least the water will come out a little slower and will not be as loud as in the bathroom. If you haven't already try using a cup to pour over your dog. Another trick would be to have a hose in the shower you can spray on them. Try this if they are afraid of the bath tub in general. 1. place your dog in the tub just to get to know it. Do this a couple of times and do not give a bath. 2. The next day place them in the bath again to give them a bath. Doing this will allow your dog to get used to the bathroom and the tub. I have never personally done this with Bella, but I think the familiarization may help your Boston.

Donnie - great video. Was Bella always this easy to groom? My 11 week old, Brandy, has had one bath. She didn’t like it and she gets antsy when I try to do her nails. I’m wondering if you and your wife had any tricks to get a puppy to feel calm, like Bella is, when they get bathed, etc.
@BostonTerrierSociety
@BostonTerrierSociety 4 года назад
Bella has always been tense in the bath. Some tricks would be a couple of things. For the bath You could fill the bath before putting your Brandy in. This way the loud noise of running water won’t be there. Also, I never did this with Bella but it sounds like a good idea lol you could start putting Brandy in the bath with no water or anything. Just once a day for a while this way she gets an understanding of what the bath feels like and maybe won’t be afraid of it when it comes to bath time. Just an idea.
@BostonTerrierSociety
@BostonTerrierSociety 4 года назад
As for nail clipping. We do it right after bath and I have Bella wrapped in a towel like a baby. I think this really helps in calming her. And we ALWAYS give her a treat right after clipping her nails so I think at this point she knows the sooner the nail clipping is over she gets a treat.

Hi! Nice video, but I would love to see how short you're cutting her nails. I have a girl Boston terrier and she is an 11 years old, I love her as my child. I did always bath myself, but cutting nails I use to take to grooming place. I notice it is was to much stress for her , so I decided to do myself. Most of her nails are black and it is hard to see how long to trim. I got clippers ,but not happy with them either . Plus she doesn't like this procedure. So am I:( Thank you:)
@lindadoran6062
@lindadoran6062 2 года назад
The black nails are hard to see where the quick is, we accidentally cut one too short and she cried and it bled. After that when you grabbed that paw she jerked it away and shivered. If you get one that bleeds use a wet styptic stick.

@ASCALON Burt's Bees dog shampoo is the least expensive and it's good. There are a number of other hydrating shampoos. I've used a couple of oatmeal shampoos that I didn't like. Conditioner is important--Warren London Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner is good. I've had Bostons for about 20 years; you've got to keep them hydrated. :) best wishes

@glittermama
@glittermama 3 года назад
@ASCALON They're quite expensive here as well, and probably equivalent at $2--3K and up. Is there a Boston Terrier rescue in the UK? I got my present BT from there and they're very good to work with. The price was around $400, and it felt like adopting a child with a home search and references from friends, family, and vets. I even had to say what would happen if I died during his lifetime. It's a good thing when breeders/rescues are careful. My question for your breeder would be about his bloodlines--are his puppies inbred? How can he sell them so inexpensively? My daughter's discount Boston has terrible genes and began aging at 8 years old, even though her markings, tail, pedigree, and facial structure indicate one of the oldest and best bloodlines--too much of it, I guess. Brindle is considered by the AKC to be within the guidelines. I think the brindles are quite attractive. My present BT is a so-called "Boston Terrier of Color." He's a beautiful red shade and has light brown eyes, but is discriminated against by the AKC who won't allow admission. Not that I care!! He's gorgeous! Best wishes with Pip, and, if you think of it, please update me when he arrives. I'm excited for you. Best wishes.
@glittermama

@ASCALON I'm sorry to hear that you never heard from the rescue. Perhaps they didn't have any available dogs. The lilac BTs are very pretty, but pretty hard to find, I hear. Good luck on your long drive! But Pip and lunch will be waiting for you!! Sincerest best wishes!!! (Can't wait to see his pic!)
