We had planned for a caesarean section (Kaiserschnitt), but the NICU stay afterwards was definitely "unexpected". Come along with us on this very personal birth vlog where we share our story of giving birth in Germany as a foreigner. A special 'Dankeschön' to the doctors, nurses, midwives and support staff for their exceptional care. Our son is happy and healthy today because of your efforts and we will always been eternally grateful for the high quality of universal healthcare in Germany.

Oh, am I ever crying for you. I'm crying with relief and joy both. I'm crying not only for all the normal good things (medical technology and supportive community) but, as an American, I'm crying with relief this happened in Germany where the surgery, your hospital stay, and Theo's NICU stay won't bankrupt your family. I'm so glad financial devastation isn't added to your transitioning to a family-of-four challenges. And my heartfelt congratulations to you all. May kindness swaddle your family in your journey together.

Yes, it helps when the medical complications happen where healthcare is considered a basic human right, and one of the main purposes for the very existence of the government.

@@bazoo513 In America, they do even consider health insurance and cheap health care to be "against freedom": "You don't have the right to demand someone's work." and "You must not be forced by the government to buy something (=health insurance)"

@@MarcLeonbacher-lb2oe Yeah, I know. OTOH, paying taxes for "littoral combat vessels" and "modular" destroyers that go straight from the shipyard to the scrapyard, or half a trillion dollar "joint" fighter that is actually three different planes that have difficulty winning a dogfight against their half a century old predecessor is perfectly all right. Priorities.... 🤦‍♂ And, BTW, in 1790, the first Congress, in which 20 framers sat, required all ship owners to provide medical insurance for seamen; in 1798, Congress also required seamen to buy hospital insurance for themselves. In 1792, Congress enacted a law mandating that all able-bodied citizens* obtain a firearm. (It appears that _this_ was "well regulated militia" the second amendment refers to.) *) OK, white, male, non-enslaved, but still....

27 years ago I was in this Uniklinik and got our second daughter in week 29/6. Also a C-section. It took us 7 weeks to get her home, but without the amazing people there, the nurses and the doctors, it might have been that none of us (my daughter and me) would have come home. She has become an amazing adult, she is and was healthy her whole life since then and we are so grateful of this - then and now and forever. So even when a start is humbly there will be light. All the best for you Ashton, your family and your wonderful little Theo🧚‍♀️

I never thought that the details of such a journey could be turned into a good video. The tour is one I experienced three times (for two living children), so I recognized most of it and could see it from the outside. Congratulations on having come out "successful" on the other side!! Thanks and full credit to your doctors and staff!

Ah thank you so much. For us, the most difficult part of the NICU experience was the unknown. In the beginning, we were told that he would only need "one or two days"... but then it turned into three, four.... and eventually six in total. In the grand scheme of things it is hardly any time at all, but being separated from him was tough. Theo was definitely the man in control and we just had to go with the flow and pace that he needed. So incredibly thankful for the care that we received and the guidance of the doctors, nurses, midwives and staff.

Before our youngest was born, we knew things would be "complicated." But nothing prepares you for the moment they call you over and tell you they're taking your newborn to the Intensivstation (in our case, before my wife had even held him). It was almost a month, including my first trip riding with blue-lights and sirens when he was transferred to another hospital, before we finally got to bring him home. But the joy when you finally get home is all the better for it. Wishing you all the best.

First of all congratulations. Much love to all of you. Secondly, I fully get that feeling of gratitude. My son developed severe epilepsy at the age of eight. It was sudden and dramatic. For years now he has had a team of people working so hard to care for him. Not just the doctors and nurses who themselves are incredible but family, the staff in his schools, neighbours, friends and even complete strangers who have rushed to help in emergencies. You can say the words 'thank you' as many times as you want but I doubt they really understand just how deeply, deeply grateful you are when people help the child you love. He is doing much better now thanks to some new treatment and again I'm so grateful to the people who worked to develop the latest drugs. I should say we live in the UK so are also deeply grateful for the NHS. We've never had a medical bill. I wish your family all the happiness in the world and look forward to your future videos.

We are so, so grateful for "our village" of friends. Being so far away from family is always tough in situations like these. We can't just call grandma or grandpa to help babysit when we need to rush to the NICU (and unfortunately, Jack was not allowed to visit in the NICU). We really are so grateful for our friends in the same way you are to yours. It makes a world of a difference.

Gosh, watching this video triggered so many memories. Our kids are now 9 and 10. This taking the punches as they come, feeling helpless and just generally the stress of it all... Seeing the toll of the pregnancy on Ashton's face, seeing Jonathan prepare for attending the surgery, going back and forth between home and hospital. For me these are all distant memories, like the endless number of diapers, the mess of it all, the question how to hold the baby and make sure the head is supported. I'm so happy for you guys that everything went well. Also happy for you (and a bit envious) for this awesome time when the little ones start exploring the world, the first walk and talk. The good thing about being a parent is that you mostly remember the good things and forget the stress and scare. Wonderful memories in the making.

@@TypeAshton first of all congratulations and may the happy outcome continue all your lives. About the wet lung - it is quite common for c-sections in general, reason being - the child does not have to pass through the birth canal where it is squeezed and therefore water in the lungs is squeezed out - so this complication is linked to c-section
@apveening

Thank you so much. We really are so thankful for all of the care and support we received from the medical staff and our friends back home. It's always a struggle in situations like these to not have family close by. This entire experience make us so thankful for our friends and colleagues that helped "fill in the gaps" when Theo needed us at the hospital.

Just wiping a little tear off my face to say CONGRATULATIONS !!! It's been an uncomfortable journey for you but in the end everything turned out to be fine just as you predicted, Ashton ! I hope you will be able to forget the hard part soon and give space to pure love and joy with your family . I'm so glad you experienced good professional care and felt safe during your stay at the clinic and that your friends supported you in such a helpful way. I'm sure there will be a wonderful party as soon as you all have recovered from the stress.

Congratulations! I am so glad you were able to bring this new life into the world. We had a similiar experience last year, when our little boy was taken straight from the c-section into the NICU and remained there for 11 days. It's humbling and (for me) kind of scary, but I am so glad we live in this day and age in which doctors and nurses are able to take care of these babies who need a little extra help in the beginning of their life. Greetings from NRW!

Congrats Ashton and Jonathan on the birth of your precious baby boy, Theo. Congrats to Jack on his new baby brother! He's adorable!!! Jack was so cute when he was holding Theo and saying "baby" and "cute". That's wonderful to have friends who helped and supported you during this stressful time. I'm glad everything turned out well and Theo is home with you. Sending love to you all!♥

A very heartfelt congratulations to you all! I think your story is incredibly important, not the least for us working in obstetrics, which I have done for 40 years by now, that everyday life experiences for us is a unique experience for you. All the feelings you were able to convey, about having a baby not feeling perfectly ok at the beginning, you took us all on a very emotional journey here... I wrote before that I counted weeks and days, and this video was some kind of relief! I am so happy for all of you. Take good care, and welcome to this troubled world, little Theo!

I had twins in Athens, Greece, both went directly into the ICU. One had Wet Lung I did not even get to hold him until he was 7 days old. Our other son was only in observation & We got to hold him at each feed. They both came home after 10 days & thrived. It was heart wrenching & upsetting at the time but all was well, thankfully. Good luck to you & congratulations.

@TypeAshton Год назад
Ah I am SO happy to hear that both of your twins are happy and healthy today. We were also quite shocked to hear how common wet lung is (I honestly hadn't ever heard of it prior to this). Having a baby in the NICU is tough. On the one hand, you are grateful/thankful for the care and know that it is the best place for their health. But it's SO difficult to be a new mama and not have your baby by your side. ❤️❤️❤️

@@TypeAshton Thank you so much for your fast reply I am grateful to you. It is gut wrenching but as you rightly say, you tell yourself they are in the best place, which is true, but even better would be next to Mama. Our son who had wet lung came out one day before our other son we took him home first & left our other one, unbeknown to me for one more day, I burst into tears as we left the car park I looked at the huge hospital & imagined my tiny baby all alone, (which of course he was not) the next day I went there to feed him & they said you can take him home. The adrenaline rush I got was astonishing. I ran around trying to get a signal to phone my husband to get here quick, he left our other son with the baby sitter/cleaner & zoomed the 25km. We were elated. So from tears of distress to tears of elation in 24 hours. Congratulations again.

@@TypeAshton Sorry, I did not answer your reference to "Wet Lung", I, Like you, had never heard of it. The gynie said our son swallowed water on his way out during the C-section procedure. I did not know that could happen. My husband asked the Gynie if that would affect his brain? But all is well. No problems anywhere. Your wife can cuddle your son which of course is beneficial for mother & baby. All we could do was stroke his legs through the incubator.

The humility, fear and morality all at once brings full circle everything that truly matters in life. Coming home after such an experience gives you such a fresh and new outlook on life. You feel so alive, so thankful and so humbled by simply existing. My applause to you and the family! May you all have smooth seas and safe harbors now the tempest has passed.
