Giving Star Ratings to Every Book I Read in 2023

Historically, I almost never rate books. It has made me nervous to do because it felt so definitive. But every time we come to the end of a year, I get jealous of all the stats that I don't get to be a part of because none of my books have ratings. So I figured for 2024 I would rate my books, and I thought a little immersion therapy would help me get over my anxiety around it by rating all of the books I read in 2023 to start.
Update! I'm proud to say that I have been consistently rating and giving short reviews of my 2024 reads. I review them on Threads and share them on my IG story (with a saved highlight for all my 2024 books).

I feel the same about Rouge by Awad. I went from loving it to hating it to completely confused on how I feel about it. I’ve heard there’s another beauty horror book out there that nailed the topic, but it makes me sad because I’m a staunch supporter of Bunny by Awad. Hoped for the best. Following on StoryGraph! I love that more people are getting onto the platform. They are about to release Book Clubs by end of month-maybe early February. But also advanced reading challenges.

Yay 😁 I love Storygraph so much. I've been supporting since they were in beta and it just keeps getting better and better. Plus the team behind it seems awesome

I loved this video! As a booktuber who suffers from being uncomfortable with star ratings, you've inspired me to get over myself as well. I really appreciated your tier "reasoning" and the time you took to talk through all of the books. I find that there are a lot of high rated books or low rated books in the star ratings and I was having difficulty creating meaning out of the mid-range ratings but the way you've set this up makes good sense to me. I might have to "borrow" your method! I love that you included a tier for "forgot"...too true!

Also, I just finished reading Boulder today and was very disappointed after hearing it so highly praised - I felt the same as you did.

That makes me feel better about Boulder lol and feel free to use the same reasoning for your ratings! I think it helps me when I try to frame it as how much I would recommend it to people. Especially when I'm driving between 2, 3, and 4

Star ratings are something I always do, but they definitely change over time. Sometimes I go back and think why did I give that rating! I think I'm really reserved with giving 5* for films, but give them a bit too easily for books. This was a fun watch 😊

I imagine I'll end up wanting to change sometimes haha maybe at the end of the year I should look back on them and see if I still agree 😊

The opening chat with your cat! 😂🐈‍⬛ I also loved The Secret History. Totally agree on not wanting to talk about Pod anymore! Definitely going to try some of your other top ones. 😊

I can't wait to see which book will be super divisive from this year's women's prize long list 😂

Like you I keep the five star rating for the really special and it usually works out at around 10% of the books I have read. My rating with the most books is easily four stars, being fairly selective about what I read helps that!

Yes! It means so much more to give it a 5 that way!

Hi. just one issue. I'm sure you know that Jack Nicholson did not write One Flew over the Cookoo's Nest. Please note that somewhere. Thanks You are so smart and pleasant . . .

For some reason, it's become fashionable to dislike or hate The Secret History, sadly.
