I've been playing this so long I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly on the seas. The worst players on the seas seem to think that this game is only about pvp and attack everyone on sight just for the fight. I'd like to remind everyone that it's the interactions that make the game, not pvp. Pvp can be fun but pvp only is boring. Don't forget to look for and have friendly interactions, too. You never know what kind of goofball fun someone might be having. They might be trying to cover an island with stools, collecting kegs to blow up an island, collecting treasure to decorate an outpost, or looking for a shrubbery (plants). You miss the crazy antics people come up with if you choose to treat everyone as a threat or choose to always be a threat yourself.

The number of times I"ve rage-quit over this mode after being matched with players way out of my league is astronomical. I've been in that dude's place more times than I can count and still can't seem to improve. Phuzzy's right, getting repeatedly spawn-killed on the way out of bounds is soul-sucking depressing when it's happening to you, even if it is a completely legitimate win strategy. Like other commenters have said, the biggest thing is to consider the other human you're interacting with. Outside of this little pirate game, they have lives, problems, successes, and worries and even a witty conversation mid-fight might be the difference between a player choosing to try again or hang up their pirate hat for good.

One night, my girlfriend and I kept getting matched against these same two double gunning sweatlords on a DA sloop. The first time we fought, they sunk us in about a minute. By the sixth time, though, we had learned to survive about 5 minutes against them and were managing to repel about half of their boarding attempts. We never won, but we grew our skills a lot. That night, we learned that getting repeatedly sunk by a better crew can be demoralizing, but it's also an opportunity to learn. When it happens, try to keep your cool, learn their habits, and try something different each time you face them. If you're able, try to copy what they do. You'll learn a lot really fast.

As a veteran that doesn't consider itself a pvp fundamentalist, one single thing that i dislike about the game's community is the incompetence of pvprs or "competitive players" to see how unsatisfying is the way on learning and how punishing it feels to lose many times, especially in the gamemode. I deeply understand rooks feeling underwhelmed and discouraged to pvp, because i see myself when i began playing arena, but that mode was really much arcade and felt fun, although there was some really good players back there, probably similar skill ceiling as today. Cool video, unveiled a reallity that most of content creators doesn't want to show about this season.

that's exactly how I've dealt with the frustration of losing in PVP in this game, I started to think about the Hourglass PVP matches as matches in any other PVP shooter (like Battlefront II for example), because in the Hourglass PVP you can start the match without preparation and therefore without losing anything you've spent time on, and then the same mindset kinda applied itself on any other PVP encounters in the game.

I am glad that you have empathy for other players. We need more people like you. To be quite honest, the hourglass PvP is a bit repetitive and tiresome to me, I am not enjoying it for a few reasons, one of the is that I am in a middle ground where I am not completely incompetent and can give a good fight, but at the same time I can't secure a win. So it is just a long battle for me for the same tiny ammount of allegiance after a loss. Loss farmers are progressing faster than what I am doing and I wish the game recognized the efforts and performance the players are doing instead of just considering the result.
@Sound_Tech
@Sound_Tech Год назад
Same. I'm either matched with noticeably incompetent players who I feel bad for beating, or I'm matched with a full skeleton crew of sweats who curb stomp me. Rarely is there any in-between. It's demoralizing knowing there are players out there good enough to reach a kill streak of 20 and it feels like it was only RNG that got me to a streak of 2. I'm trying to improve myself and all it's getting me is more time consuming loses.

>i wish the game recognized the efforts and performance instead of just considering the result The game typically doesn't do this in any way whatsoever. You made that guy’s day better, his experience with the game better, and perhaps saved him from becoming another salty-turned-toxic pvp sweat lord. It’s the Sea of Thieves, not the Sea of Toxicity. Many of us use this game as an escape from the toxicity around us and when we then get bombarded by more of the same in game, it becomes disheartening. Sadly, it’s rare to come across decent players, even while PVPing. When you do, both sides get excited and usually end up chatting while trying to sink the other’s vessel as it’s such a treat after hours of cussing, s*** talking, and just overwhelming negativity. honestly i really don't know what the answer is but being spawn camped just feels the worst, the game shines in its naval combat but suffers with player combat, I think its quite messy and there are several technequies such as spawn camping that more experienced players can use to make fights seem completely futile and unfair for less experienced players, being spawn camped can be super difficult to get out of, it is absolutely no fun at all and from what i've experienced its the most common form of trolling in SOT, but the other issue this game has is if you bring up any issues, things that often feel unfair, unbalanced or mismatched, players will just use "its a pirate game, get over it" as a reply, understand that the more you bully less experienced players they're not going to want to play, and people are always going to spawn camp, I'm not sure what the answer is but to be honest I think Player combat needs some serious work, it for sure took ages for me to get used to, and i know too well how frustraiting it is to be good at naval combat but fall flat in player combat, it can literally be the biggest win condition and its the part that can seriously be cheesed by players who know what they're doing, everyone complains that people dont get involved in PVP or that servers are dead, well the frustraiting and sometimes sad nature of player combat can really put people off, I understand its a pirate game, but you can't use that as a way of throwing fairness out the window becuase it can often lead to very negative expereinces, especially if your opposition is toxic, we all know how shit it feels to spend hours getting loot for some fucker to jump on board, spawn camp you and take all your shit, I personally don't enjoy being the camper either, I think this video perfectly shows how I feel in these situations also, It doesn't feel good to win that way, because you know how shit it is to lose that way.

I gave up after those 42 losses, took a nap, got a decent meal in my body and then started learning. and then came back after a good long hard talk with my friend. and only after taking some self-care did I start to learn and improve again. Don't forget to take breaks, hell if you REALLY want to improve you can watch some tutorials or pro-gameplay mid lunch. Or if you got time but got burned out on pvp, but still wanna grind for something? try the hunters call, get some of those pacifist friends, open a can of beer and hang out fishing, tell them of your crazy pvp adventures and maybe one of them will be inspired enough to join you, and if not. you can at least spend some quality break time together.

"That's a win" damn right. everyone should inspire their opponents. If I beat you, I want you to practice and come back and kick my ass. and if you lose, just do your best to be a good sport about it and don't get discouraged. I've been there. No one is born a winner, it takes a lot of losing.

i wish people would take the moral of this video and implement it into their playing, not only sea of thieves but video games in general have become insanely competitive which isnt a problem on its own but when the competitiveness takes out the joy that both sides can feel and replaces that with stress and frustration it makes gaming feel more like a boring job and less like a relaxing or fun hobby to look forward to.

Realizing someone is struggling and letting them take the win is one of my favorite things to do in this game lol idk why. Always leave with a "Don't explain a lot of people to do this, you'll meet a lot of bad eggs but there are some good out there. Keep practicing, love this game and want other people to love it also so don't give up! The more comfortable you get the more fun it becomes!" bc a while back I made a kid cry bc I beat him and he told me he was uninstalling and never playing again lol I felt so bad. I love this game, but one issue that really ruins the game for current and new players is this. "Good players will always win, bad players will never have the chance to win". This saying I came up with after playing this game for the first time for the past couple months. I have had great laughs and chats with my friends and other crews. Making more friends a long the way. But when it comes to progressing in PvP, it is fundamentally flawed. With the playerbase decreasing in size from people moving on and forgetting about this game, low ranking new players are forced to play against level 1000 Athena's and lose in return. Likely leaving the game for good in response. The cycle of players leaving greatly affects the PvP experience. Once you are good and exploit Rare's sloppy glitches that still won't be fixed for the coming seasons, you have a fighting chance. Until then, "good luck". People don't see a reason to play this game anymore when it feels more like a chore.

Phuzzy how do YOU deal with cheaters, today was the second time a cheater speed hacked to board my boat. We had atleast 150k of loot as soon as they boarded they instantly killed me and my teammate and we got spawn camped till their ship arrived. They hit every shot and double gun switched without skipping a beat. The first time we came across swim speed hackers it made me and my duo quit for a year, and on our third day back it happened again 'today'... two default skins with fresh accounts and a third. we avoided them at Golden sands then saw their mermaids at Port merrick even though their ship didn't move, we left port merrick and one of them appeared INFRONT of our boat far far away from cannon range of PM, we both checked for tuckers before and after merrick... but this default outfit fresh account was INFRONT of our boat in the dead open sea. It's BULLSHIT we lost hours of loot to blatant cheaters? How can a speed hack be so easy in a game like this??

Then ADVENTURE has 0 good crews, only beginners and pacifists messing around, so no challenge there. The great PvEvP dynamic of the game where you had to be on your guard is gone...it is 5 min intense pvp or 8 hours of nothing...nice job. (plus cheaters everywhere yeey)

One of the major factors of learning any new skill will always boil down to morale. It is true, the only way to get good at pvp is through practice and continuous hard work. But when you’re continuously getting stomped time and time again, leaving little to no room to even attempt to fight back, you can’t blame someone for quitting pvp or even the game as a whole. I’ve played this game since it’s launch on steam. The majority of this time was solo till I met my current crew. To this day I am still horrible at one on one pvp, and I haven’t played hourglass for quite some time nor have a desire to anymore. Back before hourglass. When the only two modes were arena and adventure, pvp looked a lot different. In adventure, the most common objective is to make money. So most natural pvp is highly defensive and mostly naval. Either trying to drive off an attacker or overwhelm a target, with boarding normally only being used as a final nail. The target trying to defend their loot and the attacker trying to steal it. But when you go into hourglass, the only objective is to kill the other crew. There is no defending loot or trying to steal. So the pvp encounters in hourglass are highly aggressive. With the most common, and most effective strat is to board and spawn trap, and either drive the other out, or bleed them out and prevent them from repairing. Back before pvp, with all the time I spent solo I became really good at naval. But naval doesn’t mean shit when the prevailing hg strat is to spawn trap you, you can’t use your naval skills if your stuck on the ferry. So the only way to become good at hg pvp was to partake in it, as adventure has a much different combat style, not as aggressive. So when someone like me attempts it, it quickly becomes a drain on your morale and time. Getting spawn trapped doesn’t allow for any practice at all because there’s barely a window to fight back unless you already know how to one on one. So properly practicing hg pvp quickly becomes it’s own monumental task. And one that I, in the end realized wasn’t something I would be capable of.

They really, sincerely, should've just made losing give decent rep as well, or give incremental bonuses for accomplishing things like kills or getting masts down, anything that doesn't just spit in your face when you lose with a pittance of rep gain. Sure people might try to game the system and farm or something but they've already done that even so, with people farming hundreds of levels with exploits or loopholes. For a feature that is supposed to make pvp more accessible and fun, they really skimped on the 'accessibility' part of the reward structure.

Maybe its the punishment, maybe its the very steep learning curve, maybe its the fact that there a lot to know, maybe the fact that the game doesnt work sometimes, and maybe its for the bad matchmaking. In my opinion, a big part of the difficultly in joining hourglass is the huge skill gap between hardcore players that used to do arenas and the new or casual players. These guys did nothing but pvp all the time, then arena went away. Now we’ve got hourglass and they all flocked there. New players don’t stand a chance, and rightfully so. If you’re new or a casual and you want to even begin to give pvp your best shot, you gotta learn all of the strategies before hand, practice becoming competent at cannons, sailing, audio cues, and item swapping. At that point, then you can join hourglass and still lose, but you can learn from your losses over time. Eventually, you’ll get to a level when you can have sort of even wins/losses. I tried joining with some of my friends just to have some fun, but they don’t care well enough to “git gud” (really just become proficient). Even with me trying to give tips, we always got smashed. This game mode simply isn’t players like them. Perhaps a rank system or something would help, but I’m not sure if that’s a reasonable ask for a game like this. Plus those kinds of systems usually need a lot of balancing before they’re good. The good part of it though, is I think it’s freed up the seas a little bit so casual/new players playing the game in adventure mode encounter less sweaty pirates! And if you really want to join the pvp hourglass scene, you can, with enough practice and dedication.

I think it's definitely true that it's made regular adventure mode that much more chill. I wasn't around for Arena but when I started a few seasons back it sucked how many hardcore crews there were out there that would go to the ends of the earth to sink you no matter what. They were just relentless for all the wrong reasons. I enjoy open world PVP but the new mode just has too much of a skill floor for me and my crew to bother. Either way, I'm really happy about what it seems to have done for the regular game.

I understand that player. I wish him all the best and hope he doesn't give up on that grind. Unfortunately its too late for me. I saw people getting the curses really quick and I was stuck at lvl 10 (lvl 12 now) and that ruined my perspective of the hourglass PvP. While I may have had the burning desire to have a ghost curse, the walls just seemed too tall to climb. But now I am back to my roots with PvE and trying out the world events (haven't really done any before maybe 1 or 2 skelly forts + 2 or 3 ashen lords in 400hrs on the game) since they nerfed difficulty for solo players and I can get them done quicker to avoid other players. I can say I still enjoy the game, but I will always look to the ghost curse as something over my limit.
