Finally!! After sitting on my editing board for more than a year the sequel to "The History of Norfolk Southern's SD70ACU" has finally dropped..
The rebuilding craze that has swept over modern day railroading has left us all with spinning heads!! What's hear today is quickly gone tomorrow, or at least re-incarnated into something different..
With more locomotives being rebuilt than bought, it'll be interesting to see what the next few years of diesel-dom bring us....
------------------------------------
Trains 21 is a documentary of railroading in the 21st century and a look at the fascinating world of transportation. On this channel we deal with all aspects of railroading with a strong focus on the Northeast USA. New videos are uploaded frequently and if you like what you see, comment, like and subscribe.

I'm very impressed with NS with the idea of rebuilding their locomotive fleets. the DC to AC Program is something I have been involved with. As a college student and avid railroad volunteer (mostly track work), I got inside looks at the Juniata, Roanoke, and Altoona Locomotive works, I got full details on the DC to AC program and the privilege to help build the first SD70ACC, and help rewire components on the former NS AC44C6C 8520, before it was sold.

The rest of this video is a montage of locomotives old & new. Some have already disappeared and some are on the endangered list. Every new innovation is eventually replaced by a newer and better one, so shoot it today because you don't know if you're going to have it tomorrow. -Trains21

Not to mention A/C traction has massive amount of tractive effort, and sustained tractive effort. Dash 9 tractive effort 142k starting and 105k continuous . AC4400 ,180k starting and 145k continuous. Huge difference. SD70M is worse compared to the ACe. Great video, i really love these .

Indeed, the ACs are superior in many ways, inferior in others depending on which railroad you ask.

I think the Tuscan stripe on the Sonic Bonnet represented the N&W stripe used on the passenger steam engines, like the 611, and the maroon used on their post-1975 and their current R&D diesels. Whereas the blue stripe for the Juniata shopped units represent Conrail, but I do see your train of thought where the blue could be N&W Pevlar blue used in their diesels and PRR Tuscan. I can make an argument either way.

I think because AC's just had different equipment. If you're comparing a Dash 9 to something like an AC44 or a GEVO, then yeah AC's will sound much different because...different current. I don't know too much about them in motion, but I know when starting that AC traction motors have a bit of a crescendo in scale or pitch. Musically speaking I'd say it's more noticeable with AC-traction electric locomotives, but it's still noticeable enough on diesels

Hi AC....Im new to your channel. Superb videos,the best I've seen,and some of my "train crew" here in Bucks County,Pa have had their train pictures published in that Railroaded magazine. To make your videos even more meaningful for me,I own my own food brokerage business. I represent some 7 food companies like cheese,bakery,turkey,chicken,manufacturers. My territory is Pennsylvania out to Pittsburgh,all of NJ,Md,MD, and VA. As I call on Weis in Sunbury,Giant in Carlisle,Gerritys in Scranton/WilkesBarre,Sheetz in Altoona,Turkey Hill in Lancaster .....I know the Rt 11/15 route,Enola yards,Taylor yard,the Curve,Bound Brook,Allentown yards.....all the great Pa train viewing locations. After my sales calls in those areas I pull over and wait for the freight. Funny,as a young boy into N,HO,O trains,I hated any road with black or grey locomotives. I liked SF, NP,SP,IC,MR,UP, and others. Now.....I like NS a lot. I like their stock price too....kinda shows what they are doing us on "the right track" so to speak. In taking many,many train photos over so many years,I ceased taking CSX's dirty,filthy,rusted beer can engines that all looked like they rolled down a ravine. IMO 7 out of 10 CSX engines are horribly unkempt. Try using some Palmolive on your equipment once in awhile. 🤣😂😅😆😁😳 But seriously,your presentation is superb,your info is very interesting, the breadth and width of the engine types shown is incredible and as I said .....it hits home with me because I've driven these roads by trackside. Many good memories. But,honestly,like all my fellow train dudes I miss the Pennsy,the Reading,the Lehigh Valley,the NYC,the Erie Lackawanna, the D&H. Here in Bucks,we do get some CP Dash 9s,CP ES4400s,BNSF of the same when the Bakken oil fields trains come through Penndel and Langhorne bound for the refineries. I must put my two cents in for NS again. Being Im in food marketing, a great idea by NS capturing all the old roads that amalgamated into the NS with the Heritage locomotives. Just wish they could paint more of our fallen flags and run those engines in the territories they once tracked. Merry Christmas to you and all!!! 🕯➕🕯

If you are talking about 8720, that's an ES44AC, built 2005. If you are talking about 9837, that's an AC44CW, built in 2004. The ES44AC has GE's self-steering trucks but later orders of the same locomotive by CP, spec'd out the Hi-Adhesion trucks due to increased maintenance requirements and costs of the self-steering design. The AC44CW was also delivered with Steerable trucks, and many have been upgraded at time of refurbishment or rebuilding, to Hi-Ad trucks instead.

Honestly with all these new fancy type of engines like ACC46M's and SD40-3's and what not makes my head spin in confusion. I have a feeling once the Eco friendly craze dies out in a year or two a lot of these rebuilt engines are going to start disappearing like the GEVO's that were once the "new eco future" did. I'm just used to knowing engines like SD40-2's, GP38-2's and SD60M's and Dash-9's and what have you and since many of my local rail line subdivisions still use plenty of those I have a feeling those are going to outlast the eco craze

This modification is very expensive.. 3-phase inverters are very expensive . The dash-9's are very solid freight locos and are going nowhere fast. They will be around.

5500 horse SD80's ... that's 1100 horse greater than anything GE's throwing out and going out on a limb here maybe to say, better longevity to boot with that reliable 2-stroke 710 engine. I've like most have jumped on the GE band wagon but EMD will be pulling hard when the others are burned up, which seems to be a GE Tradition. Don't get me wrong, I've liked GE since the C36-7 & C39-8 era but you can't deny EMD's stronghold on longevity of it's 40 series and the few but strong 20-cyl SD80's

GE offers 6000 hp locomotives with 16 cylinder four strokes, so not sure what you’re getting at...
@brian5606
@brian5606 3 года назад
@@ironmatic1 All the 4-strokes GE & EMD are unreliable boat anchors compared to EMD's 2-stroke which is the most reliable longevity engine built for locomotive use. There's 567 variants that's 80 years old still pulling their weight on an everyday basis. Reading is how a person gets learned up if you've not heard. Plus I've been a railroad buff for over 30+ years which doesn't hurt a learning ability either. So I suppose maybe some learning is in order on your part maybe IDN LOL 😆
