Replacing timing belts on a Honda GL1200 Goldwing. The GL1200 in this video is an Aspencade model. The procedure for changing the belts is almost identical for all GL1200 models, a bit easier on the Standard (unfaired/naked) model from 1984-85. This video covers removal of other items such as the saddle, faux tank shelter, lower fairing panels, radiator, timing belt covers etc. A full how-to article with photos can be seen here; www.goldwingfac...

Hey Steve, outstanding video on the timing belts. Kudos on all the elements that make up a great vid; good lighting, great camera position, perfect visual sequencing of the steps - both dismantling and re-assembly, and great written helps. I am an older guy who just bought a 1984 Wing and suspect it may need 'belts', and being on a very tight retiree's budget will probably do the job myself. It was a scary and daunting process until I watched your video which took away almost all of the apprehension. Thank you again from a very appreciative reader.

Steve Saunders does an excellent job with all his videos that I've seen/used. He shows how to do something better than shop manuals. The only critique I have is that his work comes out perfect while for example my lines in the check timing are a little off. He doesn't mention if you just go back and repeat or give suggestions on what could be wrong if it comes up that way. All said and done GREAT JOB. A tip of the hat to your videos and keep up the great work!

Thank you Steve. Your guide was perfect. I do want to note that on my GL 1200 instead of having both of those Allen head bolts holding on the covers on both sides the inside where the Allen head bolts but the outside had posts with nuts on them. The left side was easy to come off but the right side was too close to the frame. Had a little bit of frustration I ended up cutting off part of the post so I can get the cover off. Also my right side head did bounce exactly like it did in the video and thanks for the video I didn’t crap my pants. Thanks again seems like I’m on your website or watching one of your videos daily

Steve makes it look easy, for some reason when I tried getting the belts on with the pulleys at tdc I had a hell of a time getting them under the tensioners. I started thinking that the belts were to small.

When the right pulley sprung out of time, the video did not show how you got it back on the mark before putting the belt back on, did you just rotate it back in the direction it came from and it stayed until you put the belt under the tensioner???, still good video, also the covers the left side overlap the right side, which makes it first off last on. Again thanks.

Exceptional video. Wonder, why not change out the water pump? What is your advice on buying an 84/1200 GW that's been sitting for 4 years. No fluids. How much of it will need rebuild/resto? Is it worth the parts? Labor is nothing, I am an experienced mechanic. Looking for a project bike worth the investment for long tour rides. Thanks.

Once the belts are off, you just need to remove the camshaft pulleys to pry the seals out. The GL1200 engine removal video shows the cam pulleys being removed, if that is of any help.

i have seen in some videos people push down on the tentioner before tightening it to give the belt extra tention just incase the springs are worn. is there a certain amount of play that the belt should have to know that you have the correct amount of tention? this is on a gl1100 witch looks the same as this 1200 in the video.

So detailed that it scares me to think that I could actually do this. Do you have a video on how to replace the seals if the cam shafts or main shaft are leaking oil in the timing belt area? thanks

James Aich this process is way easier than he's making it look he's taking off way too much s*** that he does that does not have to be taken off or removed need to remove both lower side fairing Shields loosen the radiator remove the lower radiator hose just take a 2 x 4 or a block of wood block the radiator out of the way and you have full access to the timing covers take the covers off replace the belts but everything back together start to finish your done in an hour have no f****** idea why this guy remove the saddlebags to see the full gas tank cover all of that b******* just replace the timing belts this is why shops f****** charge so much f****** money cuz I do all this extra b******* and charge you for it if you look it up in the book in the manual it's calls for an hour and a half job and these assholes want to charge $600 to do this s*** get a manual do it yourself it's easy I've changed my three times

What's with the right side timing belt being looser towards the top instead of looser where it's supposed to be at the tensioner 🤔

how do you know if the bike needs new belts? what happens when the belts fail?
@hook86
@hook86 4 года назад
You won't have warning generally. Failure can destroy or seriously damage the engine. The valves will be struck by the tops of the cylinders. You need to make sure they are changed are reasonable milage intervals or if they are excessively old.

I have an 1982 GW 1100 that I am going to change the tensioners on and this has been a great help. I noticed the engine made a ticking sound and was wondering if that is normal as my 82 has just started doing that and the mech at Honda said it is nothing to worry about. He said the engine runs fine but I would not like a surprise in the mountains. Can you give me a clue what I should check to "calm myself" about this? Thank You Daniel Alioa

My only thought is about preventive maintenance. As long as you have everything exposed, why not replace the tensioners, too? If the belts are old enough to be worn then itsn't it cheap and easy to replace the tensioners? One less headache in an interference engine.

How easily do the valve stems bend if the timing belts are off? My first time doing it and they were off, started the bike and Pistons were hitting valves. I shut it off after 30 seconds of trying to figure it out. I realized what it was and am going to correct it. Is there a chance the valve stems are okay? Not want to pull the heads as I just installed new head gaskets. Thanks in advance

Why is he doing all that extra work I just remove the lower side front fairings off removed the bottom coolent drain bolt below the thermostat housing removed the bottom mounting bolts to the radiator and pulled it out placed a small block of wood in between frame and lower radiator housing and was able to obtain access to the timing belt case with more than enough clearance every time I've done this I work at a Honda Certified Honda GoldWing repair shop this is what we specialize in in Brandon Fl. Isn't it a problem if the pulleys move ever so little, when the belt is off?
@joshrandall3632
@joshrandall3632 3 года назад
Not a problem if they are returned to the right spot when the belts are put back on. As long as the engine isn't turned over far enough to cause the pistons and valves to hit each other. That would take deliberate effort, so you won't be doing it just by bumping the cam sprocket. If you had to send the heads off to be decked or just cleaned up or needed new head gaskets, you could return them to the right spot using the marks on the engine, heads and cam sprockets.
