I actually did ask for this movie 🤓 but back in 2000…….., cause we wanted to see the Naval battles in the flooded colloseum we were learning about in school 😅 they sure took their sweet time

Djimon Hounsou played a significant character in the first one, and other black individuals played gladiators in the coliseum as well. I don’t have any issue with Denzel, who’s a great actor, playing an important character in the second film-the only thing that came across as a bit strange with his character was that he sounded like an everyday modern individual I’d have a conversation with today, whereas just about every other character in the trailer who spoke had an accent and sounded more like they were from a set time period (granted, there could be a deliberate reason for that, or the trailer might have unintentionally simply made his speech sound quick and misleading). My issue is the more general one: the story from the first film felt very much completed by the end, and it seems unnecessary to have a sequel, and as a result, I am concerned that the plot will not be particularly strong in a way that would justify the movie’s existence (hopefully this ends up not being the case). The cinematography looked good, and if the movie ends up being a good movie, it would be great to see a well crafted scene or two featuring the recreated sea battles in the coliseum, especially if they take the time to also show how that was actually done. It would be nice if this ended up being a great film. I will also say that the music used during the last two or so minutes in that trailer really did not do the movie any favors, at least not when it comes to people who already felt on the fence about this movie when it was first announced. The music legitimately took me out of it and made the trailer look and feel more like one of the fake trailers in “Tropic Thunder.” I’m aware that a special trailer for the first film contained a Kid Rock song, but if I remember correctly, that was a one-time trailer aired during the Superbowl (at a time when those trailers didn’t go on days or hours later to be rewatched millions of times on social media, because social media of that kind didn’t exist yet). All of the main trailers for the first film used music that actually fit the type of movie that it was. That said, I’ve seen many great movies that had subpar or even straight up bad trailers, so hopefully this movie ends up being a great film that’s worthy of the original.

Trailer did nothing good for me. At all. Surprised Ridley is doing it as it looks like a "cheaper" ( not in cost ) retread of the first. Even the name Gladiator 2. Really ? Just 2 ? Damn. Even Beetlejuice got a more creative name. My guess : its for normies, or younger people who prefer the new style of the same story. Denzel: appropriate accent might have helped.

I had an interest in this movie but the trailer looked like s@it and the rap music was weird. Ridley has done mostly trash movies in the last 20 years or so. Denzel's acting style and less about his race just felt out of place.

Denzel Washington's character seems to be a gladiator trainer. There was an African Emperor during the Crisis of the Third Century. Rome had African provinces (Egypt, Africa, and Mauritania). Nubia (modern-day Sudan) was just across the border from Egypt, and an easy boat ride up the Nile, go past the two cataracts, of the Nile, and take another boat up the Nile to Alexandria. So a wealthy Nubian dealing in gladiators could be making a ton of money in Second Century Rome. So there is nothing out of place to have a black rich person in Rome in the middle of the Second Century AD.

People should learn about the Roman Empire, it's stretched from Africa to Asia...

Denzel is fsr from the greatest actor of all time. I've never seen a movie where he wasn't playing himself.

Although if you want a great show about Rome... Just watch the HBO show... ROME. Standout performances from Ray Stevenson and too many others to list here. Much more historically accurate than anything Ridley Scott will ever create.

I've a feeling, given everyone involved in this, my reaction will be Goddammit this sequel to a film that never needed one has no right to be this good! Hope I'm right.

100% agree with you about the whole Denzel situation. Also, historically there were different types of ethnic groups in ancient Rome, so a black person really isn't far fetched. I'm in no means woke, but this is true. Also, there was a black guy in the first movie, so I guess those people who left those comments never watched the first movie.

Fortunately, the movies we get aren't just the ones that the most vocal minority "ask for" because, frankly, I don't trust their judgement or their taste. I'm tired of comments about "this isn't the movie I would have made" from people who never made movies, period, as if they were somehow unacknowledged genius writers/directors/producers. After Furiosa, I certainly don't sit around hoping that brilliant, discerning, audiences will "vote" good movies into existence or success. What Joe Sixpack will or won't pay to see, regardless of what it is, isn't my definition of quality. That said, and meant, the original film is very overrated, but people will also throw around the term "masterpiece" so easily that the term is currently virtually meaningless. Scott is one of the few directors still in a position TO take chances, and does so, even when they result in a partial misfire like Napoleon. Whether this movie will be one of those or not it, like most of Scott's other work, it's intended to be a commercial success first, and an artistic achievement second. It's just going back to a well which, once upon a time, contained a lot of valuable water. On the "controversy" about Denzel's character, quoting three or four of the most illiterate people on the internet doesn't really make this any kind of a "debate" that needs resolution, but it IS more grist for the outrage mill, on both sides.

To be fair ... not everyone died. I admit to being very interested in this film. It's on my list of most anticipated for the year. I'm not going to watch the trailer beforehand.

I don't think there''s any outrage for a black character there, everybody (including me) loves Denzel and as we can see in the trailer, he'll be easily playing himself in this movie :D and those 3 idiots - nobody cares about them. I mean, that trailer looks like the movie would've cost a bil.$ :D As the trailer was ending, I was like "yeah, of course you put a f* rap song there because Denzel is in it, right ?! idiots"...and then I checked the comments and its the top critique :D I mean, the original trailer for the original Gladiator was completely different as well as the music - one would assume, something completely different, something that would try to mimic those times, maybe ?! :D

Considering the role he is, it could make sense, this sort of thing may have been uncommon, but it happened I believe.

The quasi-mystical feel I had with the first (and Hans Zimmer's soundtrack) is not there for me so far, better have a trailer with Harry Gregson-Williams' music next (he's a collaborator of Zimmer). And about Napoleon, Ridley was just being ass, there's no excuse/no honor in fucking up a biopic so badly with such piss poor research (and don't get me wrong, Gladiator wasn't all that well researched either, but it had longstanding epicness and a soul, Napoleon is about a way more known era and lacks a soul - the soundtrack is awesome though).

I love Ridley Scott and I love Denzel Washington. But this is going to be a disaster. Denzel is miscast and didn't even try to take speech classes or anything to help make it seem as if he belongs in Ancient Rome. It just look like you took some guy from NY City and sent him off in a time machine. And who is he supposed to be anyway?... The first was loosely based on true events. But this one doesn't even seem to be that regardless of what you say here. And stop cherry picking comments to make things seem like they're racist. The main outrage here has nothing to do with Denzel's skin. Most of it is because he shouldn't be there. And I do mean HE. And he's not a living legend. He won an Oscar in Training Day and has been in a few other good movies. But most of what he's done isn't that great. And you're talking to a person who literally went to the theater to see his Malcom X film. He's good, but he's definitely not anything close to a Hollywood legend. And history will show this. Denzel casting is not woke b.s. because there were Africans in Ancient Rome. They were Roman citizens, politicians, poets, slaves, gladiators, traders, servants, and enemies depending on the time period. It wasn't about race per se but status back then. For god sakes, Hannibal a Carthaginian general from North Africa was one of Rome's greatest enemies.

There were no black Emperors" there's this thing called the internet where you can look up the cast & who they're playing. Denzel is NOT playing an emperor. Today its why is No Church in the Wild playing? The lyrics used matched the trailer perfectly. If people would LISTEN. also the "They only using that song because Denzel in it" the trailer was excellent did the 2000 masterpiece need a sequel? No. Will I watch this movie opening weekend? YES. I'll just say, none of the people complaining about Denzel being a black roman emperor, even though its not that far fetched if you know the location of ROME and its HISTORY, NONE of these people ever complain about how the majority of Hollywood movies involve a white guy saving the world or being casted in a role that should have been given to the appropriate ethnicity. The Last Samurai, Prince of Persian , The Lone Ranger (Johnny Depp as Tonto) are just a few. They also never complain about the majority of super hereos being WHITE. Which is more far fetched than this movie's alleged historical inaccuracies.
