Maximus was a real person in real history maybe not the film version but Marcus Aurelius described him in his memoirs and his descriptions describes what a completely self-actualised man looks like. It is a description that I aspire to and judge myself by every day. Here it is... “Maximus set an example of self-mastery, steadiness of purpose, and good cheer that no circumstance, not even illness, could extinguish. He combined in beautiful measure gravity with charm, and he did whatever needed to be done without making a fuss. Everyone believed what he said was what he thought and that he never acted with an intention to do harm or give offence. Nothing surprised or frightened him, and he never seemed to be in a hurry or slow to accomplish a task. He was neither intimidated and embarrassed on one hand, nor aggressive and suspicious on the other. So giving, forgiving, and loyal was he by nature that he appeared to be a man whose virtues were inborn rather than acquired. It is unimaginable that anyone ever felt inferior or superior around him, perhaps as a result of his pleasing sense of humor.”

Supposed inspiration for Maximus was Quintus Sertorius, a Roman general who started a rebellion from the Roman republic in Iberia (modern Spain). For a time, he defied everything the Roman senate threw at him, including the finest general of the time, Pompey Magnus, who was later defeated by Julius Caesar.

Marcus Aurelius, the Philosopher Emperor, was one of the last "good" Emperors of Rome. His work "Meditations" is a cornerstone of the Stoic school of philosophy and is taught in philosophy classes today. Commodus was one of the absolute worst Emperors Rome had...he is up there with Caligula and Nero as both "mad" and "bad". He actually would fight in the Coliseum and he staged lavish and expensive games during his reign. Historically, there is no way that Maximus would have been made a slave. Most likely, he would have been executed, assassinated or exiled. However, for story purposes...he's made a slave. Gladiators, while they were slaves, were richly rewarded. After a few years, if they survived, a galdiator did not need a rudis as Proximo was granted, but could buy their freedom. Not only that, having Gladiators as slaves was very profitable, if they were good. So...the times what they were, Proximo invested in slaves and trained them in gladiatorial combat. Life was very cheap and brutal in Rome if you were not a full Roman citizen. If you ever heard of therm "bread and circuses", it was an allusion to Rome, the Coliseum, and the mob of Rome. Keeping them fed, entertained and "happy". The Coliseum could be configured for all sorts of exhibitions. Animal vs Man fights, chariots, even (not kidding) recreations of sea battles where drowning could also happen to the gladiators in addition to loss of limb. Whatever someone was willing to pay for (Emperors, Consuls, Praetors...if they had the funds) could stage games for the glory of Rome, the glory of the Gods, or just to get the mob on their side in elections. Quite frequently those who stood for Consul (two elected each year who were the highest ranked men in the Senate, like a dual Presidency) would have games staged to get those who could vote on their side and secure their support. Again...bread and circuses. Richard Harris (Marcus Aurelius) and Oliver Reed (Proximo) were Hellraisers as young men. There is a group of actors and musicians from Britain who fell into this classification: Peter O'Toole, Ricard Burton, Keith Moon (the drummer of the rock band The Who). They drank to excess, partied to excess, had affairs with beautiful women, and got in fights...and the tabloid press ate it all up. TMZ would have had a field day with their exploits...because sometimes it would happen on set or, worse, on stage during a performance. Richard Harris had become quite clean and sober by the time he made this, and a couple years later would play Albus Dumbledore for two 'Harry Potter' movies before he passed away. Oliver Reed, however, died during production of 'Gladiator' of a heart attack...his lifestyle having took its toll. Unfortunately, this meant they had to re-write the ending of the film, use CGI, stand-ins, and previously filmed alternate takes to finish the movie. In fact, Jubba (Djimon Honsou) was not the one buries the little icons of Maximus's family in the sands of the Coliseum...it was Proximo in the original ending. I think Jubba was supposed to die at the same time as many of the other gladiators who die during Maximus's escape. This is my favorite Ridley Scott film, and one of my top five favorite Russell Crowe performances. From Ridley Scott: 'Kingdom of Heaven - Director's Cut' with Orlando Bloom and Eva Green,. Another great Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe collaboration I love, but no one has done yet is 'A Good Year', a romantic comedy set in the south of France with Marion Cotillard (The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Oscar-winner for 'La Vie En Rose') as the love interest. Russell Crowe: 'L.A. Confidential' and 'Master and Commander: Far Side of the World' are both excellent.

He was a rare, but welcomed case where an old emperor wasn’t overthrown by scheming nobility. So many others with a soft administrative touch like him were taken down way before they had been able to do as much good as they could. Aurelian comes to mind almost immediately thinking about good emperors cut off too early.

Yup. The themes in the movie are on point. And the shifting and opposite make it always entertaining. 25:32 even at half strength Commodus wasn't going to be able to be able to beat Maximus. the short sparring they showed Commodus doing earlier was Commodus telling the soldiers what strikes to do, and when to strike. all scripted, he'd never been in battle, Maximus was battle hardened. an amazing film, and great reaction! on a side note, for a comedy/action film you should check out "Kung Fu Hustle". it's hilarious! 👍

The gladiator events went on for centuries, until a Christian man who was tired of it ran down to break up a battle. The people were angry and stoned him to death. The Ceaser at the time was appalled by him getting stoned, and put an end to the gladiator games.. That's just my vague recollection of the historical account that I learned from the channel "Tasting History with Max Miller" when he did a video on what gladiators ate.. His videos are great. He tries to make ancient dishes, and gives you a history lesson surrounding the time period and dish.

You stated during the video that "this is how football players come into the arena". The Colosseum during these "games" used sand as their flooring. The reason for that is because it was easy to spread and hide blood. The Latin word for sand is "arena". That is where we get the word to describe large stadiums in English, from the original area in Rome.

In a break from filming, Sir Ollie died drinking with Sailors docked in Malta from HMS Cumberland. 8 pints of Lager, dozen shots of rum, half a bottle of Whisky and some shots of cognac. He covered the tab, beat 5 serving sailors at arm wrestling before calling it a day. RIP you fucking Legend.

The image of Gladiators here is somewhat a myth; Gladiators cost far too much to train to have them killed so easily. Usually the ones who got killed were criminals sentenced to death. Sometimes people would take part in arena displays; risking bodily harm, to pay off debts, but rarely were Gladiators killed as part of the regular day to day displays. Only at major festivals was it likely to happen. kerk

So glad you viewed this. Thanks for sharing. Saw it in the theater. "Am I not entertained?" I am. Thank you. Strength and honor.

When the Emperor says: “you have not seen what Rome has become”… it sadly reminds me of our modern times. We need to fight for a higher kingdom.

Loyalty is something existing as people existed, but was never defined or put into words for the past 2000 years since society existed

I just want to say that this is Hollywoods version of gladiator fights (real gladiator fights rarely ended in death) they also had refs to enforce the rules (one rule was if your opponent slipped and fell you had to wait until he got back up)

Nice reaction, but editing out all the key aspects of the movie like Maximus' reveal takes away a bit

They did use large cats in the arena. Unfortunately, they sent Christian men, women, and children into the arena to be fed to the lions and they were not given a way to defend themselves.
