@simonsalgueiro6217
@simonsalgueiro6217 11 месяцев назад
@@praapje Dude, exaggeration as an argument is never good. Implying several times they are exact copies just diminishes any argument you then write, as it makes you look desperate. Either you haven't watched The Fall of the Roman Empire and Spartacus (which i think it's the case and you just read in Wikipedia that the script was influenced by these movies), or you have bad memory. Spartacus never challenged Rome as a gladiator. The thick of his story is how he instigates the slave revolt. The only similarity is that both Maximo and Spartacus became gladiators and were good leaders. That's it. The Fall of the Roman Empires has more similarities. But the relationship between Commodus and the protagonist is quite different, same as their intent. Livius was never a slave/gladiator and was a close friend of Commodus. He continues to be a general and even accepts a high position in the rule of Rome. So yea, this movie was the main inspiration for Gladiator's story, but it's not "exactly the same" in any way.
@tinahairston6383
@tinahairston6383 Год назад
This performance won Russell Crowe an Oscar with very good reason. Truly a great movie and part of a dying art of mastery. The business of being a Gladiator was violent, deadly and a crowd pleasing money maker. The guy playing the fight promoter/owner, Proximo, is the late Oliver Reed. While still filming this movie, he actually died from a heart attack after challenging some sailors to a drinking game so they were forced to finish his remaining scenes with CGI. The rumor is that his death scene was the last one he actually filmed... talk about creepy. Asia: why is being a creep? Because he IS a big ass creeper is SOOOOOO many ways, lol. Commodus wasn't raised to be a strong, confident, accomplished man but a spoiled brat. He and Maximus were "raised" together but he was jealous of Maximus in every way. To think he could fight Maximus and win??? Please, lol! That's why Marcus Aurelius wished his daughter had been born a man so it wouldn't have been hard to pass the empire onto her. She was the "man" Commodus would NEVER be. Commodus wanted power he didn't earn and definitely didn't deserve. He was delusional as well because he had to cheat, lie, and murder to get his way. As gross as it was that he wanted his sister to give him a pure blood heir, it's not without historical accuracy. Some family trees go straight up...no branches. Sorry, Asia but those fight scenes were incredible.
@davestang5454
@davestang5454 Год назад
Oliver Reed had that crazy unhinged personality and it was a fitting end. He wasn't just going to go away quietly in a retirement home. Commodus in real life survived as Emperor for a fairly long reign.

Really late reply, but now there’s a Peacock series called Those About to Die, obviously set in Ancient Rome. It explores more of the underbelly of Rome, like it depicts the betting on the gladiator games, and the corruption and deceit beneath the glamour. It also has the differences in characters who are ambitious for power and those playing the game to survive in the cruel, dark world, but aren’t strictly evil, and are complex. Has Anthony Hopkins in it, and some actors from Game of Thrones.

It works on so many levels: the acting is phenomenal, the story is compelling, the backdrop of the film is beautiful. It's destined to be a classic, which is a film that can be watched and appreciated with each subseqent viewing. Also, Hans Zimmer does an excellent job in composing beautiful music that captures the tone of the film. "My NAME... is Maximus Decimus Meridius...".... one of the best lines delivered in ANY movie of the 20th century! It deserves it's place in the quotable lines of the very best movies. Also, I sometimes imagine what kind of movie it would have been if Maxiumus had made it back to HIS Legion... and invaded Rome. Whole different movie, but, could have been an equally great movie.
@davestang5454

No, that would have been a bad plot. Besides total removal from historical accuracy, it would have been out of character for Maximus. He never wanted to rule.

The battle at the beginning is my favorite part as it's probably the most accurate part (there are a few inaccuracies such as flaming arrows and riding your cavalry through woodlands). The testudo and arrow barrage before the battle is what usually happened. Marcus Aurelius is probably considered one of the best (if not THE best) roman emperor in history and he was very wise. His book meditations is a good read and i'd recommend it.
@davestang5454
@davestang5454 Год назад
Flaming arrows in battle are a very real historical thing. There is a good accurate account of native Americans in Florida using flaming arrows in battle from the 16th century. It would not have made the same sense in Roman warfare, especially in a forest. The Romans were definitely intimidated by the Germanic tribes and often felt out of their element fighting in that area.
@aaronburdon221
@aaronburdon221 Год назад
@@davestang5454 it happened but it was extremely rare. Considering the bulk of the forest was burnt, there wasn't a pitch ditch to fire up and they themselves weren't in much danger of getting set on fire, its highly unlikely it they would've been used in this situation. That's a better summation of my meaning behind the inaccuracies I mentioned. You DAMN sure didn't drive a cavalry charge through the woods though because that would be suicide.

A rarely cited but in my opinion very powerful line is at the end right before she asked to honor Maximus, Lucilla said to the senator: "Is Rome worth one good man's life? We believed it once. Make us believe it again!" My favorite movie of all time.

The writings of Marcus Aurelius are still studied and revered today. He was considered a philosopher, and a great man.He was the last great emperor of Rome, who fell into Civil War after his death. The movie takes some liberties when it comes to Commodus. Commodus actually ruled for about 13 years. He was made Co-emperor at 15 by Aurelius. He was a depraved, ill prepared, terrible emperor when he ascended to Ceaser at 18 after Marcus Aurelius' death. He is considered the worst emperor Rome ever had along with Nero and Caligula. He was uninterested in doing any of his duties. He played with his 300 concubines and did kill many in the Coliseum, pretending to be a gladiator. His killed his sister when she tried to have him murdered. He also killed other family members. He was famously assassinated by Narcissus, a Roman wrestler, at 31.

This movie is exceptional. Historically, Marcus Aurelius was Caesar and his son Commodus was too. Commodus did actually fight in the Colosseum and apparently fought both gladiators and beasts (I'm sure they were like fixed fights though). He was betrayed and murdered by one of his sparring partners in his bath in real life.
