To fix the issue with the range I would go ahead and unwrap the line as it leaves that way you will gain the length of the line from the drone to the buoy and give you a lot more freedom to move around and keeping the buoy closer to shore. This will help with issues of range and operation. I am sure off a boat would be ideal but not everyone has one.

Yes the video was excellent and the turtle was amazing. Good job. When you put that cord back on make sure you roll it on like a fishing line with the crank, do not wrap it round and round or it will be a million loops lol..

It's great that you can go back and inspect your own buoy like that. All it needs is a couple of small robot arms on the front of the Gladius and you could have untangled it remotely haha. Might be worth an accessory of a seperate float cradle for the reel so that it is kept totally out of the water as it unravels. But I'm not sure of the practicality of having the reel floating 100m away from you while you remain on shore anyway. Seems like it's a recipe for losing the entire setup if the buoy drifts beyond wifi range.

I don’t understand why they didn’t put an antennae on the controller. That is likely most of the problem. That and the tether being tangled up, although that shouldn’t cause the loss of signal since it’s a hard connection, not a WiFi or Bluetooth connection. Until they put at least one antennae, and preferably two antennae’s on the controller, it’s really going to limit distance.

I don’t know how, even with that bottom on, how it’s going to keep the tether from unraveling. I have a 100ft electric cord on something similar, and it will unravel from all directions, but if you are standing holding it, the loops will fall off the bottom just by weight alone. It needs to be threaded through like a hole with rollers on each side, so it doesn’t come unraveled. I may be completely wrong, because I just found your videos on the Gladious today, and have only viewed the unpacking, the search for your Mavic, and the night video in Hawaii and this one.

+Louis McCluer hey Louis. Good theory. The tether is very light and also floats a little. With the bottom on it does surprisingly well but when it's in the water there is indeed no way to control unravel aside from the Gladius speed. Current will speed the process. Having it on shore is the safest bet unless it is very calm 👍

Dustin Dunnill kind of what I thought. I just don’t see a way of controlling that, without putting some type of resistance against the spool. Other than that, I was surprised by the clarity, and how well it moved. Unfortunately, bodies of water in my state, Kansas, aren’t very conductive to using this, otherwise I could see definite search and rescue uses for it in waters that might be dangerous for divers. Also on the location where you was looking for your Mavic, if someone didn’t all ready find it, the hydraulics of the waterfall will either pull it back into it, or push it out, depending where the heavier flow from the fall itself is. It will also be located either wedged in front of something, or laying behind a large rock or tree limb, because things like that will tend to migrate to areas of lesser flow strength. However, if that area had times of higher flow rates as in flooding, especially if the level of the ponding area rose, it likely was moved out of there, or pushed up on the shore area, where someone found it.

Seems nice. Too bad for the wire issue. It would be nice to see deeper exploration now, and yes, night time diving. Fish sleeping is something a lot of people are not used to, and can be quite cool to watch :)

Except then its very limited in how far you can sail it. Being somewhat autonomous is a huge advantage.

What would be perfect is to have a retractable cord setup. like the kind they have in the old Electrolux vacuum cleaners. only it would need to have sensors to be able to make sure their was never too much slack or too much tension.

Could be that the drag on the loose cable snarl was upsetting balance of the buoy and affecting the bluetooth orientation? Much better with the sea-water weight module. I didn't expect the full range but as it was, a bit disappointing. When it was working it was great though. With a few improvements this could well be both a good commercial tool as well as being a great consumer gadget

+didactylos4 diddy4 It's a wifi connection between buoy and phone and Bluetooth between phone and Controller. Yes,byiu may be right. When the buoy is pulled it lays down a bit Wich could alter signal but I think the issue is more than that. Probably no wifi antennas or repeater at the Controller is the issue.

It seems to be a very good underwater drone , beautiful image , good stabilisation system , good maneuverability , but the big downside is the wifi connection that keeps disconecting all the time and a lack of qualité (spool) . You did review many underwater drones ! To you which one is the best, thanks dustin for all your videos!,,

Might have better luck with the wifi connection if you turn off your cellular connection, don't know if you did that or not. I've had issues at least with my phone getting a stable connection to video streaming devices over wifi

Is the line needed or can you just cut it off? Maybe it would have been wiser to run a direct line from the camera through the line to the screen so then there aren’t any more breakups from signal loss. I’m sure this would bump the price a lot more but a “premium” version perhaps. Idk just an idea :)

I wonder if the loss of connection was because the Bouy was being pulled over because of the rat's nest (causing the antennas to go into the water)? Might be worthwhile doing a dry land test of the range?

+Wes Ness That may be part of it but even when I could see it floating straight there were the same issues. The setup just needs antennas / booster on the pilots end to work effectively I think.

Well, looks like you'll have to break out the "Gorilla Glue" and then do a re-shoot. Looks promising. Did the filter fall off? Hard for me to tell as I'm partially color blind, but it still looked nice. That rat's nest reminded me of early "open reel casting rods", because if you didn't cast it right, instant backlash and rat's nest on the reel. Fortunately, later on they came out with closed faced reels, like the Zebco and Shakespear, which made backlashes a thing of the past. Will be watching for the next adventure. Mahalo!

They have fixed the issues with the V2 of this sub. They also have a Gladius Mini out now (I'm under review) which has more motors and much better control/stability. I'd say the mini is the best for the price at the moment.

Hi Dustin! I'm really amazed with the clarity and sharpness of this video. I went to Hong Kong recently and had my defective unit replaced with a new one. I just removed the front rubber protecting the lens of the Gladius Advanced, I don't see any thread to screw in the red filter... how did you attach your red filter and what diameter? They say 49mm, but how did you attach your red filter to the ring? Diameter you used?

I used the GoPro squar filter here and just rubber bandanded it to the collar notch of Gladius with rubber humper removed, you can slide a 49mm circular filter over also then work the rubber bumper back on but it's tight. I hear the Gladius team is about to release a factory filter kit.

I just bought a Gladius Advanced... hello Dustin, don't you find the focus and quality of the camera disappointing? Still images /photos are really bad as well as the video quality. The video camera's focus seems like near sighted. Your thoughts on this please.

The photos aren't great if it's moving at all . Make sure your in water or it will be blurry out of water. I usually take screen grabs of video for pictures but it needs to be tracking the object perfectly to be clear. Hopefully they can fix some with updates in software 👍

I just want to check if what I bought is a defective unit, so it goes that when on land the focus is fuzzy and when underwater the video it captures will look focused and sharp? The focused distance is just a few inches away from the lens?

Yes, correct. I believe the best focus is about 6 inch away from lense for nice close up details.

You would think that the camera on this ROV, which is designed specifically for use underwater, would have color correction built into it, or at least come with its own color correction filters with how expensive it is.

Yes, they've fixed all of the issues I had with this first unit. The Gladius Mini & Dory are also fantastic options.

Hey Dustin question please. How do you change the focus point? I received the drone after waiting over a year for it but it only focuses on objects 4 inches away. pressing on the screen to change the focus point does nothing. I can’t seem to get ahold of customer service either so I’m hoping you figured it out. Thank you!

I was an original backer for the V1 so it was long and can't really be compared to ordering now. You should be getting the V2 correct? Early V1 had some sealing issues but fixed in V2. I sealed my V1 better myself and didn't really have any issues since this video aside from the occasional WiFi disconnect 👍

Great job as always. Had my H501s fly away when using return to home now i can't find it. Just wondering if you would recommend the xiaomi mi drone 4k? Im semi experienced. I've trained alot with cheap drones.

I wanted this drone until i saw part 4 of your review. It seems way to buggy and frustrating. And I'm not convinced that software patches can fix all these problems. Seems like the camera has a focus problem aswell. In both the 4k video and your photographs, both edges are totally out of focus :/ Sad! Thanks for all the great reviews though :) You made me buy the disco, and also not fly it accross the ocean :P Keep up the good work

+Stian Skrogstad Right on Stian. They have already remedied the hardware issues I was having here. Only a handful of us initial indigogo backers have received the first run of the product. I'd imagine the units that they'll be shipping will have the fix for the buoy. I'll be reviewing the next generation and on as well so expect a lot of improvements by then. It's ok to fly the Disco over the ocean...just be more careful than I was 😉✌

Dustin l just recieved my Gladius today and viewing your video. I know you were disappointed on several instances esp. when the buoy connection came a loose. Do you know if the company addressed and improved on those issues?

Next time after you put drone in the water, walk back with the transmitter about 20 feet from the water so the splash and noise of the water doesnt half drown out ( pardon the expression) the sound of your voice lolol..

The floating spool is pointless and is going to be nothing but trouble. If the control was wired directly into the spool there would be no need for wi-fi and the resulting lag. The spool should remain on a boat. Absolutely no need for it to float and have wi-fi. This would be most suitable on a boat. If you use it off the shore the umbilical will get snagged on stuff or cut and wrapped around a boat propeller. For off the shore you just need a camera and a snorkel anyway! For the price, filters should be included as you can't use a camera in the ocean without one. If they did away with the stupid floating, wi-fi spool, provided a fixed spool with 200M umbilical and a set of ocean filters that attach securely to the lens it would be a decent bit of gear, but I think that's already been done. If all that makes this unique is the floating wi-fi spool, then I think they have failed.

+al35mm I'd have to disagree about the wireless buoy. Aerial drones like DJI have achieved miles of control and video range with low latency by proprietary wifi so the potential is there. Eliminating the users who don't have or can't access boats or can't swim/snorkel is not a good strategy. The wifi buoy system is a great idea that will work if it can be easily anchord to bottom to make it stationary in water and also by improving wifi signal via antennas and or extender on pilots end. Another very unique feature are the dual vertical propellers. In stabilize mode it's able to stay very well locked on horizon even in current. The other competitors I've seen only have one vertical propeller which I can't imagine can be nearly as stable for roll.

Don’t worry about it brother if that was me I would’ve smashed that fucking remote aginst the rocks and left that piece of shit floating out there ... next i would’ve contacted whoever manufactures that thing and tell them that their product sucks... The only good thing about the damn thing is the 4K camera you got some pretty decent footage 20 seconds at a time before it would disarm.... Anyway thanks for the review... buyer beware
